Of course, the odds of being a guest handler, which everyone will want to do, are slim. More likely you will get stuck selling coupons or crowd control.
But don't let my words deter you from volunteering! I heartily recommend the experience. Its generally worthwhile, no matter what you are doing

Thanks for posting the link!
Please note that they do say they will get back to everyone as soon as GenCon posts a tentative schedule. So don't expect to get news of assignments right away.
This is really a fun experience. You get to meet a lot of really nice people. I'll see you there!

Does it take away from your fun time? How much of your time is expected generally? I think it'd be a neat thing to do, but don't want to miss a bunch or stuff or not get to do things I want to.

You beat me to the punch, rhonderoo. I was just about to post this exact same concern. I'd love to volunteer as well, but my greatest fear is that I would be volunteering while there was something going on at CIV that I wanted to see.

Well, Anne will wait to sign people up until the schedule comes out, as she said.
People don't show up; it is a volunteer opportunity, after all. At C-III I worked while George Lucas was speaking, and there were a lot of people there along with me. We made the commitment and stuck to it. (Of course, it was not that much of a sacrifice because I have seen GL in person other times [a perk of living in SoCal]). Nothing can stop you from not being there if something you think is better comes along. That's why she schedules floaters, and can switch people around pretty quickly. The main thing is to have guest escorts; that's important. The rest works itself out.

With it being spread out over five days I would think you should be able to volunteer and see what you want. The best thing about the volunteer badges was being able to skip the lines for many things and being given good volunteer seats. Yes, you might sacrifice time and events, but you also get the benefit of seeing other events, or at least better seats, you might not otherwise see precisely because you're a volunteer. It is a tradeoff, but a worthwhile one on my opinion.
edit: The biggest problem at C3 was people showing up to get their volunteer badge and then not doing any of the work they agreed to do. If that is your intention than do the rest of us honest people a favor and don't sign up. It certainly wasn't fair to the people who gave 25-30 hours or more at C3 because they were picking up the slack of dishonest idiots.

Can you say "I want to volunteer on this day and time" or do they just say "Here is the time for you to volunteer"?

QFT, Moff_D.
We were able to pick the times we wanted to work. And, just as on the form that Anne has up on that website link, you rank (from 1 to 7) your choice of what you really, really want to do. I know I didn't say "I want to be Toby Philpot's Guest Escort," just got assigned to that (and was very happy that I was -- he is a great guy).

Well, remembering how well things ran for Gencon and 501st volunteers at C3 (which wasn't good), my wife and I did apply to OPX. At least we know they run things smoothly. Considering we haven't heard anything on the 501st/RL front and its only 3 months out there is a bit of cause for concern. Not that we wouldn't volunteer some time for 501st/RL as well, but its better to be down for something at least, if only for peace of mind (and especially since we enjoy the volunteering aspect of these events).

As has been said, Anne asks for times you are available when things are a little firmer and the scheduling begins. To be honest, the more people we have who sign up the more 'flex time' we'll all have. At C3 I had been first in line to 'see' Hayden and when it ran late, I had to give up my spot (after checking in and finding that no floats were available) and I did my shift anyway. It was still SO worth it! I'll sign up for a set number of hours and probably pop in over the weekend just to pick up any slack.
I agree that people who sign up and don't show up suck! Yes, we get cool 'perks' (essentially a 'fast pass' to some things and the OP goodies are neat, but nothing beats being serenaded by Tem Morrison, or sharing a giggle with Sandi Finlaye!) but if you make a promise to work, KEEP it!! There are only so many spots, and if you just sign up and don't show up, not only are you denying someone else the experience, but making those of us who honor our commitment work that much harder to take up YOUR slack!

Just signed up. It'll be an experience, and that's what I'm after as part of my trip over.
Looking at what they have set up and talking to others, I'm thinking of doing the same as you Breezy, do a couple of the shifts and happily fill in if required (and not clashing with other stuff).

I worked C3 and it was awesome! I actually got the shifts I wanted. I got the first shift of the entire con and the second to last shift. I worked crowd control the first and a guest worker with Jerome Blake the second. I enjoyed meeting the other volunteers too! I'm hoping that I might get a big wig guest this time, but I won't be disappointed if I don't. It will be fun regardless!

Thought about signing up, but I had too much fun volunteering at the FF table the last two Celebrations to do this I think.
