Everybody
I was just informed that most airports will NOT let you put anything under the plane with a strap , IE a Poster Tube or a gym bag type of suitcase. They will confiscate it. My poster tube & my giant gym bag Im bring with me has a strap so I will be tacking them off there and back.

Hey, Eric. What about bringing a poster tube with a shoulder strap onto the plane as a carry-on, which is what I plan on doing?

STAR WARS CELEBRATION IV is getting closer!

Who told you this? I travel with people who have bags with straps with them all the time! Think of the bags which have shoulder straps, for instance, like a duffle bag or even a backpack. Heck, the baggage handlers pick bags up by the straps.

Now, a poster tube I wouldn't check, because it's too small.

My friend just flew to Detroit last week and they confiscated both of his shoulder straps from his bags ,telling him that airline will not lut you have them under the plane because there is a chance of the straps getting tangled up with other luggage.

So the mystery now is how the heck are you supposed to carry anything?

How is it for decades they've done this, but just now they figured out that the straps could do this? ugh... Soon theyu won't allow handles! haha!

Ah, that's American. So, they are getting to be sticklers about this. Too bad. Obviously best course of action is to remove them. Taping them down might work, too. I see lots of packing tape on bags happy .

Concerning luggage straps, luckily mine comes off of my garment bag, so I jsut remove it before I check it in, and put it back on when I retrieve it from the carousel. As for the poster tube strap, I bring it as a carry on, and have never had a problem with it. Another option would be to tighten the strap on the poster tube, so it's as close to the tube as possible.

I have ALWAYS removed the straps from my luggage and stowed them within when I check them. It's a habit from way back, I've been flying since I was a teen.

It isn't sticking it to the common man, and you don't have to leave your straps at home. When you go to check your bags, just unclip the straps, stick 'em in a side pocket and away you go happy

That might be too long. For instance, Southwest limits carryon bag dimensions to 10x16x24 inches.

Really, only thing to do is to call your airline and ask. Better to do it ahead of time rather than get a surprise when you get to the airport.

If the airline does not allow the poster as carry on, ask them if they have procedures with dealing with oversized fragile carryons, like a skycheck. I;ve had stuff sky checked before and it goes in a different luggage compartment.

Me and my wife are flying with AIRTRAN AIRWAYS and I checked on their website and no carry-on item may exceed overall dimensions of 55 inches (length + width + height) and all carry-on items must fit under the seat or in the overhead bin.

My clear, blue poster tube is 37" x 2 3/4" I.D., so the size of it shouldn't be a problem. happy

It'll be interesting to see just how many perthites come up and say g'day. I may not say G'day back because it sounds goofy in a Canadian accent.

It sounds even funnier with a Southern accent. A friend who migrated to Oz came from Alabama and we never tire of hearing him try Aussie lingo.

As to the poster tubes, do check as others have said. Coming through both immigration and then having an internal US connection the procedures are stricter. But there was a lot of stuff (including some poster tubes) that came through both carry-on and "fragile"/specialist check-in on both my flights.
