Anyone familiar with or have experience dealing with TSA airport security regs? I assume they're not going to let me carry on my lightsaber, which has sharp steel spikes on the hilt. I'll have to check my various lightsabers packed in a hard shell golf club travel case and hope they make it through.
Since the last day of CIV is a holiday, UPS & FedEX are not open so that rules out shipping my stuff. Anyone have any insights on this topic? Thanks.

I recently had a big problem with a security worker for TSA. Apparently they think they own the planet and they can scream at people and treat them like crap and threaten them. Well, the mean TSA womanm who crossed my wife and I learned her lesson. She got sent home right in front of us. I guess after complaining to her supervisor, her supervisors supervisor and writing a formal complaint, they got the picture an sent her on her way.
Anyway, pack everything in your suitcase. You don't want to chance it.

Yeah they are pretty rude to say the least and I was thinking to myself "Yeah welcome to america".
I cannot wait to fly into LAX and get asked the most stupid questions thats got totally nothing to do with my trip.
When I bought a parks saber at comic con san diego in 05 it was ok to place the hilt in my luggage bag as long as I marked it up "star wars prop". As for the blade they would not allow me at all to go onboard with it cause of the phono jack flying internationally but if it was domestic it was ok.
To me it seems you can pretty much take anything on planes with domestic flights within reason.

It basically depends on what airport you are flying throught. I've noticed that flying out of Newark, NJ, basically anything gets through. I've flown with lighters, screwdrivers, etc that on my return trip they've made me either dispose of the item or check my bag.

DO NOT BRING MANECURE SETS WITH YOU ONBOARD!!!
I had to relinquish my set in the airport and it was in my purse. Also, no scissors or filing tools, you can have an emery board, but not those metal ones. They say they can be used as a knife or puncturing weapon.
Also, they will make you activate pages and cell phones so that they know they do not have explosives inside of them.

Don't forgot that you might have to take off your shoes to have them x-rayed. I'm going to have to ship my costume boots as they have metal plates around the soles as well as screws in the soles as well.

You cannot use locks on your checked bags. I've been asked to remove them by personnel. :/
What you can use are zip-ties in place of locks. They can cut these if they feel they need to search your bag. These are plastic ties that are virtually impossible to remove once fastened except by cutting.
If your bag gets searched, they are supposed to leave a paper inside indicating this. It's happened to me flying out of DFW. If you find things missing or no paper, contact the airline immediately.
Your best bet is to ship anything too valuable or unique to be easily replaced, and carry all your electronics on board in carry-on. Laptop computers and purses are not counted as your one carry-on item.
I've not had TSA ask me to set off my pagers or cellphone since I discovered that if they don't see them openly, they don't ask. This was mostly at DFW and IND. I put the items in my laptop bag, my carry-on, or my purse and never was asked to make them work.
Laptops have to be scanned outside their bag. Please do your fellow travellers a favor and make sure you can freely get it in and out before getting in line.
My biggest grip this trip will be not being able to take a drink with me onto the plane. They take forever to serve in coach and I will be suffering until then. When you've got a dry mouth like mine, gum has a limited effectiveness in helping to overcome the pressure changes of take-off and touch-down. :/

You can -- as long as they are TSA-approved locks. Examples are here.

You can bring 2oz. of liquid aboard the flight, that could just wet your whistle until you can get a drink from the cart. Also, if you have a medical condition that makes it necessary to have a drink, then call the airline ahead of time, and they will make the necessary available for you.
Maybe, take a giant drink before you get on the flight, then toss it in the trash before you get on the plane, and then you have that backup 2oz. with you until you can get a beverage.
Hope this helps!!! I have a baby that requires milk, so I have contacted Delta ahead of time and they will make sure I get milk as soon as I board for the baby. So, I know it works!!!

You may now carry on drinks purchased after you clear security. I don't know if this varies per airport but I've had no trouble lately.

Airport security is ridiculous anymore. As if flying alone isn't nerve racking enough for some people. No, they have to make every part of the experience more stressful.

If I had the extra time, I'd've taken Amtrak, believe me. The LA Union Station is pretty spiffy. No security hassles, lots of time to catch up on reading or sewing...
Thanks for the tip on the locks. However, if they are going to cut them off to search bags anyway, I'll go with the incredibly-hard-to-remove-but-inexpensive-as-heck zip-ties. You could break a luggage lock with wirecutters, so I'm really not sure they do more than give you a sense of security that wouldn't deter a thief. Plus I'm not into spending good money and getting a broken lock out of it. I'll get my sense of security for pennies instead of dollars.
I'll try the drink thing. I suppose the worst they could do is make me throw it out.

RebelGrrl, they don't cut the TSA approved locks. They use a special key to open them, then lock them again. I'm going to get those locks because I like to always leave my luggage locked in hotels - it would annoy me to have to keep attaching tags and cutting them off!

They could make that a bit more clear on their website!

I agree. I've spent hours at that website trying to understand it all! 3 ounces (88ml) for carry-on liquid, clear zip-lock quart-size bag, x-ray your shoes, TSA approved locks... driving me nuts. I understand why they have all these rules, but man is it confusing. We're not that strict in Australia!
