The news article I saw last week about 10 screeners at LAX being arrested for stealing from luggage really made feel like my bags are good hands...

Never put anything in your checked luggage that you can't replace.
I actually plan to bring some of those USPS flat-rate boxes and envelopes with me. Even the post office in po-dunk hicksville where I live now has the automated atm-like postage center where you can purchase postage and insurance and such for multiple mailing rates whether the post office counter is open or not. So I can pack my treasures up, put on the postage, and send it home ahead of me.
My home post office is weird about priority mail and won't just dump the packages on my front step... I have to go to the office to collect them if I'm not home, so they'll be safe. I also have a housemate that will take them in. If I didn't, I have relatives in the area that would hold the packages for me. People might consider looking into that.
Yeah, it costs a little more, but the flat rate boxes really aren't so bad if you compare it to what it would cost to replace your treasures and the heartache and bother involved in reporting them stolen.
I keep hearing there's a fed-ex office on site at the convention center. I prefere USPS for cost reasons, but that's a perfectly viable option, too.
The only concern I'm currently having is securing my laptop in my hotel while I'm at the convention. I need to keep it with me in LA (it's a work-sorta thing), but lugging it around the convention doesn't seem like fun. Unless maybe I get up a female 'Ghent' costume.

Well then the next 6 months should be pretty good at LAX. They got the crooks out and the others will be on extra good behavior for a while. At least that is what I HOPE is the scenario!

Depending on how high-end your hotel is, they may have a safe you can sign stuff in and out of or safety deposit boxes. (Although, I don't know if it would be big enough for a laptop.)
Just some ideas. My only electronics will be my Nintendo DS (Great for killin' time in line) and a digital camera. And they are both coming with me to the con every day.

The convention center business center has UPS and FedEx capability. Just FYI -- they won't take checks, just cash or credit cards. And hopefully it will be open -- the convention organizer has to request it.

I thought about that too. They will be paranoid that they are being watched closely and will keep their hands out of the cookie jar. Between my wife and I, most of the stuff like autographs and such will be in our carry-on luggage.
