I'll be posting things airmail back to Australia. Hopefully it won't be too expensive... at least it can't be as expensive as buying off Starwarsshop, since the only option there is priority shipping. I don't mind if things take 1-3 weeks to get home if it's cheaper.

Ahhh, an excellent question, and one that I have the perfect answer to. What I did at C3, was I brought my collectibles out with me to be autographed in a large plastic container with a lid, the kind you might store Christmas ornaments in. I made sure that it was only half full, considering what collectibles I might bring back with me. I basically duct taped the lid closed and filled it with styrofoam peanuts and wrote my name and address on the lid as my "luggage nametag". Worked perfectly for me.

I hope the UPS store is set up better then it was at c3. Thankfully I don't have to deal with it this time around but I don't think I would have wished that on my worst enemy. It was understaffed and was put in a closet-sized room. Looks like according to the Exhibitor's map that it'll be on the actual vendor floor so at least that's a plus. The plastic container is a good idea but you probably want something really sturdy so the $2.99 special at Big Lots will probably just get busted open by the luggage handlers.

Btw...there is nothing wrong with shipping your clothes home UPS and making your girlfriend fill up her carry-on with your collectibles. happy

Thanks all for the idea's. Will the airline limit me on how many suitcases I send back with me?
I was thinking of putting a extra two gym bags in my suitcase on the way out and then filling them with figures and checking them at the airport on the way home.

I'm gonna have to ship some things back home. The international flight isn't a problem but between mailland OZ and Tassie there's restrictions on checked and carry-on baggage. UPS will charge me a small fortune so I'm going to have to find a USPS somewhere.

I work in the mailing industry ( USPS & Fedex ) and I can tell you it will be a heck of a lot cheaper to send anything overseas via USPS. You can also break it up into multi packages to cut cost.

Dont use UPS to ship anything home, they way over charge and say its 3 day and it took two weeks, they tried to charge extra import duties.

Northwest allows you to check two pieces of luggage on a flight. Each piece cannot exceed 50 pounds -- that'll cost you extra if it does.

So, if you're traveling with someone, you can bring four pieces of luggage for free. After that -- each additional piece of luggage will cost you $80.00.

The closest US post offices (there's one in the Macy's at 7th and Figueroa and one at 100 West Olympic Boulevard) are open Monday through Friday only. The closest "open Saturday" location is at 1808 West Seventh (downtown), open 0830 to 1530. And note that NONE of them will be open on Monday, Memorial Day.

I've always been tempted to use my work's Fedex account to ship.

But my extreme amount of guilt and paranoia - and the fact that I never buy that much at a con that I need to ship stuff home seperately - has stopped me so far. tongue

This is United Airlines' policy:

Worldwide Carry-on
  • 1 bag (Must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin). United may require that a carry-on item travel as checked baggage if the item cannot be safely stowed on a particular flight.
  • Dimensions should NOT be more than 45 LINEAR INCHES (length + width + height)

There is also a Carry-on baggage restriction (the liquid/gel/baggy rule). Rules are slightly different for the U.S./EU and International flights.

Domestic checked baggage
  • You may check 2 bags free of charge.
  • Dimensions should NOT be more than 62 LINEAR INCHES.
  • Maximum weight of each bag 50 lbs.

Check-in restrictions: keep in mind that if you DO NOT satisfy the airlines' check-in time limits, they will be EXCLUDED FROM LIABILITY for your lost luggage! cry

It becomes a little confusing here: Each airline has a rule on check-in time AND each airport also has a rule. For instance, I am departing from Chicago on United airlines.
United requires that baggage be checked-in at least 30 minutes, but O'Hare airport requires a 45-minute cut-off time. So I will make sure that my bags are checked according to airport rules.

United recommends that you actually arrive at the airport 90 minutes prior to a domestic departure to complete the check-in process. International flights require a longer process.

If anybody here is flying 1st class, you are allowed to carry additional carry-on & checked baggage and the max weight is higher.

Just a thought, but could the dealers maybe ship the items home for you? Have them save the item for you?

What about locks on gym bags to keep "thieves" that work for the airline out?
What about nylon ties?

If you have your luggage locked in any way other than with TSA-approved locks, they will just cut them if they decide to do an inspection.

And BTW, he's flying on Northwest, so the United info won't be much help for the original poster.
