The discounted hotel rate changes don't bother me at all. I'm just happy I have a hotel reserved for CIV no matter what the room rate is.

well for the people that might now be able to go that were not able to go before I think this is good for them for sure. I would be going either way I suppose, but I just feel the prices CA is charging all the way around are far higher than one would have ever planned on paying, just sad that so many fans are not able to go because of financial reasons. It suddenly explains why perhaps before now it was held in the middle of the US instead of a coastal area, though the coventions in San Diego were about $140 a night and in Phillie a couple of years ago it was about $110 a night, both coastal areas but not nearly so expensive as downtown LA. Not to mention the convention in Phillie was Independence weekend.. Pretty amazing to spend the holiday right by the Liberty bell and pay such a small amount to do it.. anyway.. I am always getting off topic.. sorry bout that...

All forums seem real slow about C4. Take away top 10 on this one and there would be hardly no one. Still most hotels around the convention center are not that much cheaper. And in bad parts of town. C3 had 3 huge hotels connected to the convention. Sold out a year before.
My hotel rant.
We got 1st hotel room for $75.00 at the Mayfair. Mayfair got word about C4 a few minutes after I got my first room. When I called back less than a hour, they went up 3 times the price. I threw a fit, but no good. So I had to get rest of the 4 rooms a lot higher price. But when the convention came out with the hotel list. It was $170.00. George making money on the dang rooms also. I would cancel and get closer and nicer for less. But dang. I will lose like $220.00 in cancelation fees.

Iv said since the beginning that holding it in LA would alienate 70% of the country and less attendance would be the result. I mean that why so many people arnt going. The travel expense.

The 50% discount only applies to 4 hotels and it only makes the people making reservations 'eligible' for a drawing for a 50% discount. That's not much of an incentive IMHO. If GenCon thinks this will increase hotel reservations.....well, I think that they would be mistaken. CIV is in three weeks. It's a little late now to be offering hotel specials.
I think the $50 cancellation fee is just a plain rip-off. And it discourages people from making reservations. I have never run into this from other conventions I've books hotel rooms with. Other conventions negotiate with hotels for BETTER room rates for their members. If GenCon did anything like this, then they did a poor job and too bad for them if it causes them problems. There are other lower priced hotels in the area and anyone with their own transportation would just pick one of those. If they wanted more reservations in the 'official' hotels, then they should have been more competitive. But it looks like the raised prices for CIV attendees.
I didn't decide to go to CIV until the end of the year, so I knew I wasn't going to get a deal since all the best choices would have been taken, but I got something I can live with.
I couldn't say how much the hotel situation would affect tickets sales to CIV, but I plan on having a good time regardless.

I think the attendence will be down simply because there's really no new SW news on the horizon other than the video game. The new Clone Wars series and TV show are too far off.
Attendence at C III was huge because of ROTS.

We used our AAA discount when we booked thinking whatever convention deal was bartered wouldn't be much better. In hindsight it looks like we did a wise thing. *shrug*
One other factor to consider is that it is also a holiday weekend, and prices usually are higher for a holiday weekend.

taking your own vehicle still requires paying to park though.. at anywhere from $20-$40 per lot per day.. or so it is being reported everywhere I have called.

True, but you don't need to take a car to use the AAA discount

oh I agree with you 100% use whatever means you have at your disposal to save money.. I am driving and taking my own car myself... I just hope that everyone else taking their own transportation is also fully aware that it is not completely free and easy with their vehicles.. they are still going to have to pay dearly to park if they take the car downtown, prices like most other states have never heard of.. I have parked in some major cities in the US and never have I seen the prices that I am seeing in CA.. but oh well.. I'm paying it... I wouldn't miss this for anything.. I just want us all to be prepared.. I don't want to see anyone in trouble financially once they are in CA because they were not aware of an unforeseen cost. that would be very very upsetting.

Thanks for the clarification. I kept looking for the discounts and just couldn't find them. I did however see the "contest" for the 50% discount. I think only 4 or 5 people have a chance of winning. I don't remember the exact terms.

Mississippi is way too far to drive. Was going to cost like $800.00 in gas and hotels and 4 days of driving and parking. Flying for $280.00 and what ever a taxi will run.

LA is a dump. It's too expensive. If sales are down from C3, the location of the event is a major factor. AT least the weather should be nicer than Indianapolis.

Hey, L.A. is not a dump. That's an unfair generalization.
There is a lot less to celebrate this time around -- no movie, for instance. One can expect attendance figures to reflect that.
I've always heard that Lucasfilm wanted the conventions to be out here. That obviously played the major part in deciding to move the gathering to Los Angeles.
