I'm staying at a non-official hotel and am wondering about how easy or difficult it is to get a cab in the area. I'm particularly concerned about after the movie marathon, which won't finish up until around 2AM.

If necessary, I'll just use the old stand-by of taking the official shuttle to an official hotel and getting a taxi there, but I'd like to keep my options open. Any ideas?

Hailing taxis... does not exist as a viable option. You can call cab companies though.
Cabs aren't that common, really. I've lived in the L.A. area all my life, and not only have I personally never been in a cab here, I've also never seen someone hail a cab.

What Lowbacca said -- best thing to do is call Yellow Cab and arrange for a pick-up.

Wed may not be that busy with cabs in the Area, But i use to drive Taxi and i can tell you this. It would be best to make aragments to get picked up. I would say with as many fares the cab company will get on the weekend expect to see alot more cabs just driving by to see if they can get a quick Fare.

Still, and downtown L.A. may be different, but at least based on Hollywood.... I hardly ever see taxis.

There are no shuttle buses other than what's available through public transportation, like the DASH buses that ply the streets of downtown: DASH.

Here is a website that will tell you about the authorized taxi companies: Taxis

Hey, thanks! blush

I should add that if you go to that cab website and check on "areas served," the "C" area includes the downtown area.

Another thing -- the hotels in the SW room block have access to cab service, of course. You can speak to the concierges or go straight to the bell desk for info. They can always get a cab for you.

Thanks for the information. The only big city I'm even somewhat used to is NYC, where cabs are common.

I briefly considered renting a car, but the total cost would exceed any advantages (plus I'd get lost just going around the block). I guess I'll have to call for taxis when needed.

This is one reason I liked Indy for the last two; both times, my hotel was only a couple of blocks away from the Convention Center.

There *are* cabs at the airport though, right? So weird to see people seriously saying "Yeah, you can't really hail a cab or get one without calling them first." shock

EDIT: Just found the AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION INFO thread. Convenient, huh? ;p

Opinions:
We are planning on renting a car at the airport (on Tues.) go straight to Santa Monica (beach) for the day and maybe keep the car through Wed. only and return it to the Biltmore Wed. night. Does this sound OK? Enterprise said the cost of an SUV is cheaper to rent than a car.

Sounds like a good plan. I'm speculating that the increased rental cost is because you're not returning it to the original rental location. That's going to make a difference, definitely. Would the difference be more than $15.00? 'Cause the shuttle to come back from the airport to the Biltmore might be only $15.00, and if you save more than that returning it to LAX... something to think about.

I did a route search starting with a bus at 8 AM. Here is a sample route:

Ride Commuter Express bus 422 (VENTURA BL-TOPANGA CYN) heading north

From: FIGUEROA ST/PICO BLVD(NE corner) Leave: 08:06AM (this is close to the convention center)
To: HOLLYWOOD FRWY/ALVARADO ST Arrive: 08:23AM

Pay $0.90 + $0.25 for Transfer (you will need to get a transfer because you are changing buses)

Ride Metro Bus 10 ( WEST HOLLYWOOD) heading west

From: TEMPLE ST/ALVARADO ST(NE corner) Leave: 08:33AM
To: MELROSE/POINSETTIA(NE corner) Arrive: 09:00AM
Cost: $1.25

The total bus far is $2.50. You must have exact change! The bus drivers cannot make change for you. Trip is about 40 minutes.

Going back, the buses are a little different:

Ride Metro Bus 10 (SAN PEDRO-MANCHESTER) heading east

From: MELROSE/POINSETTIA(SW corner) Lv: 03:03PM
To: HILL ST/TEMPLE ST(SW corner) Ar: 03:42PM
Pay $1.25

Ride Metro Bus 91 ( DOWNTOWN LA - HILL-VENICE) heading south

From: HILL ST/TEMPLE ST(SW corner) Lv: 03:48PM
To: HILL ST/12TH ST(SW corner) Ar: 03:54PM
Pay $1.25
Ending at 1201 S FIGUEROA ST

Total cash fare = $2.50. Takes about an hour to come back (because of the time of day).

If you would like to see additional schedules, use this link: MTA. Use the Metro Trip Planner to put in your exact departure address.
