So, for you LA locals, what's the best and closest beach from the convention center or the LAX?

Santa Monica I would guess is the closest. I don't know if there are any "nice" beaches up there. wink

(I'm biased cuz our beaches are better). tongue

I don't live in LA or California... but as a visitor to LA the one thing I did enjoy about Santa Monica beach was the Dolphins. You could see them quite well frolicking around, and there were lots of showers and bathrooms and parking was easy to find as well.. but very clean the beach was not I do have to say.

As far as clean and nice water to swim in.. it was a long drive but we absolutely loved going to the Newport beach area.. we had to walk down a really long long steep concrete ramp but it was a beautiful beach with a lot of rocky cliff like areas and the waves were awesome. How to get there.. don't even ask.. but it was well worth the drive.. we went at night and it was tremendous!!

Truthfully? You'd have to go to Orange County for "nice beaches." My favorite is Corona Del Mar, but Huntington's not bad either.

Kitty? You have any insight on "good" places in LA?

This time of year, the water is too cold to go in. Plus, the fog (which can form into our "Catalina Eddy," if the conditions are just right) stays on the coast right through the morning, often not going away until way into the afternoon. For instance, according to Santa Monica's ten day forecast temperatures may not even reach the 70's, so you may not encounter "beach weather."

If you just want to wander along a beach and do some shopping, Santa Monica is your best bet because it's a straight shot down the Santa Monica Freeway (the 10) from downtown L.A.

OK, this is what we want to do,Go to Santa Monica the day we arrive straight from the airport - see the beach, Pier, eat lunch, shop - I heard Santa Monica is a beautiful place?!
Any tips on where to go there?

I also was not counting on swimming cause of the weather, water temp. ect. but I love beaches!

The Pier has pretty much everything (including roller coasters and a Bubba Gumps!), and there's a huge mall too a few blocks down the street.

Third Street Promenade is a great place to shop. Here's a link: Third Street Promenade. Great shopping and a lot of great places to get something to eat. Plus -- lots of parking!

truthfully, having lived here all my life, there really arent any good beaches. malibu is nice, but what valedakor said, its too cold to swim. but the santa monica area is really nice except for the homeless people.

Well if the temp is in the 70's, this is going to upset the Mrs. We had our beach day planned for Sunday. Oh well. More CIV I guess.

Venice beach is also lots of fun. if you dont mind street performers, interesting vendors, "funny" smells then venice beach is for you. I wouldnt swim in the water, but going through the boardwalk is lots of fun. there is also a great walk way to get to the board walk that has river and pretty houses

Do I mind street performers? Man, I love street performers. They add character wherever they go.

I heard Malibu is worth driving to. About 1/2hr from Santa Monica?

From near the LACC/Staple center you can take the I10 to get to Venice beach and Santa Monica beach correct?

Well, the drive is nice, but you can't really see much. A lot is inaccessible because of the private (and exclusive) beach residences behind locked gates. Stop for lunch at Neptune's Net, at County Line. Great for watching the surfing, and for the fresh seafood.
