I actually have thought so far that this was way more organized than C3, with the exception of the issues last night. I got to Opening Ceremonies and had to leave about 5 minutes after we sat down, and I did get a lot of "I'm sorry, you can't go this way" and just basic runaround. Of course then DarkLadyMara scared the **** out of me by telling me that the center was evacuated and she couldn't get ahold of anyone who was in there at the time, which included MY SISTER. But they were all fine and none the wiser.

Wow... and here yesterday I was depressed that I wasn't at this thing. I went to Celebrations I-III and they were all great experiences. Yes, there were lines and a bit of the chaos. But it is beginning to sound to me like this was organized as one last cash in on the Celebration idea. I have been hearing of no GenCon staff, hardly any official LFL presence at all other than the Opening Ceremonies (which... need I say more than what has already been said by others), and I have even been hearing of some of the store employees taking full cases of merchandise out the back doors. Yes, stealing. The fact that there are solid cases of the "Exclusive" action figures on eBay already leads me to believe that this may be true.
So... I am glad that I stayed behind this time and planned my own "Celebration" weekend with family and friends. We have been having a BALL. And the only money we are spending is on booze and food.
Way to go, LFL. Milk it 'til it's dead.

Maybe I should be grateful for my last minute change of plans... too bad.
Overall I have been really unimpressed with the handling of "Star Wars 30th". Hell, even a limited screen re-release of A New Hope in theaters would have been something. Force Unleashed... delayed. Star Wars 3-D Imax... maybe. Basically we get Hasbro recycling old figures in new packaging... wonderful.

I've been thinking about this as well. It seems a really lackluster 30th birthday from LFL, doesn't it? Its kinda like everyone at Lucasfilm is really Star Warsed out this time.

I gotta say, I don't get all the complaints. The Opening Ceremonies was a little boring, but the real jet pack Fett at the end was cool, and it was neat of them to serve us all cake.
So far I've found this convention much better organized than CIII. There was some minor confusion with the initial handling of the line for Carrie with Officialpix (they didn't have anyone there enforcing the "#1s ONLY" sign until after the line was cut yesterday morning), but in general the lines have been well-managed. The store was fast and convenient, the will-call pick up of badges AND officialpix tickets was great, the line for the Q&A with Carrie was well-organized and moved when it was supposed to, and best of all, the venues are big enough this time! The only REAL line problems I've experienced were with third-party exclusives, like the Hasbro booth or Gentle Giant.
I guess there are always things you could complain about, and minor inconveniences can seem very big when you've been on your feet all day, but I've been doing my best to roll with the punches and consider this just a "celebration" and not a must-see, be-all end-all type of event. And I for one am having a blast! Here's hoping everyone sees all they want and has a good time for the rest of the weekend!

Exactly
The damn LAPD had to interrupt (or should I say SABOTAGE) the biggest Star Wars convention ever's opening night just for a suitcase that wasn't even dangerous. Evacuate the fans? For what? **** you LAPD!!!

Hate to nitpick, but CIII will go down as the biggest SW convention ever. Gonna be kind of hard to beat 50,000+ attendance. I heard that they were only expecting 20,000-25,000 for this one. And with GenCon handling it the way it sounds like they are, should be the last one for a VERY long time.

I agree with whoever said that with the exception of whatever happened last night (I was at the opening ceremony, so I wasn't affected), this has been far more organized and better handled than C2 and C3. A lot of that may be due to the greater size of the LA Convention Center compared to Indy, and the better layout for the store, but it is still a great improvement.

Oh well, I guess we were not important enough to be told anything...lol
Take solace in the fact that you weren't one of us "evacuees," who were lied to, misled, and frankly put into worse danger through the inept handling of the situation. (Putting a bunch of oddly dressed people out on the streets of LA with no access to their cars is not exactly a "safe" way of handling things. Nor is closing off all exits but one. Nor is actually telling people to cross a street in the middle of traffic.) I just hope everyone comes back tomorrow to find that they still have their merchandise and that GenCon isn't going to charge them for the extra day's bag check.
Same here. You were standing outside the event waiting to get in, I take it? I got there around 6:30 to start lining up, but then I decided that since the room was so big there was no need to line up that early. Big mistake. When I came back around 7:30, they had us all lined up outside hall K and the line wasn't moving at all. I called some friends inside to ask if it was full, but they said there were still plenty of seats. So, we had no idea what was going on. We spent about half an hour standing in a line that wasn't moving being herded around by the crowd control staff while they started declaring that various parts of the building were being closed off. Then they told us the place we were standing was closed and they sent us to another part of the building. And then they threw us out of the building entirely and told us all to leave because the LACC was being evacuated. I was pretty nervous at that point, especially since there was a cluster of police cars parked outside with their flashers on. So I called some friends inside again and asked what in the hell was happening there, and I think I mostly just served to confuse/scare them because they'd heard nothing about the bomb scare. Oops.
Oh well, I'm just glad it wasn't a real emergency. Fortunately it was just a nuisance and nothing more. Why should you let one mishap ruin the rest of C4 for you? Not going back because of this would be pretty silly, IMO.
And Carmen, I thought you knew by now that my username has SPACES.

At one of my sessions today (the Family Guy one) they told us that they wanted to make clear that the evacuation last night happened because of LAPD, and not because of Lucasfilm or GenCon. So... yeah. Take that for what it's worth.

Honestly Gen Con is doing their best with what they're being given. If there are only 25,000+ people at C4, that's a bit smaller then the average size of Gen Con every year, which keeps growing and as a nerd I do go to every year. And have never had a problem with lines or the place being evacuated.
Though that does suck that they did evacuate people during the Openning. Just go to the Gen Con boards and complain to Peter and he'll get you a free dinner. That's what happened last year when they screwed up some people's event registration. But complaining here won't fix the problem because the Gen Con people don't read here.

Wow that is a bummer. How scary to have it be evacuated. I'm glad I wasn't there for that.
Good advice PK.

One stupid rumor I've heard (though I doubt it's true) is that GenCon evacuated us on purpose because they didn't want to admit they'd overbooked the place. I like the theory about members of rival fandoms calling in the bomb threat a lot better, though.
