I think many of the artists are taking the same prints to CE, otherwise they will have to strike a deal to sell them through starwarsshop.com. They really aren't allowed to sell the prints on their own (special things like canvas could be different, but LFL keeps a tight lid on the prints).

As I posted over at the Dark Horse boards, with any show the size of Celebration, every attendee's experience is going to vary from every other's. That some people had an awful time while others had a great time is hardly a surprise (nor is it really a surprise that some want to gripe about their experience). I for one thought it was a fine show -- well organized, lots of varied programming and exhibits, the shuttles ran on time, the doors opened when they were supposed to, and if you were willing to do some searching, the food was pretty good, too (all you had to do was find the outside food court with its stands for tacos, Chinese food, BBQ, etc., and ... margaritas!).

The Dark Horse booth was, due to bugetary restrictions, smaller than I would have liked, but ultimately its size and location turned out to be a plus as we had a back aisle all to ourselves where costumed attendees could pose for photos and fans could drop by an have leisurely chats with our writers and artists. All in all, I had a great time.

It's fair for somebody to say that they had a horrible time, but I don't think anyone can really make a convincing argument that the show itself was horrible.

Biggest complaint: poor handling of the exclusives by some of the vendors. They were handled way badly by some of them, with a few notible exceptions (Sideshow). This was the first C that I've gone to where being close to the front in line outside each day meant nothing when you tried to get the limited items. It really cheesed me each day when I would get in the exhibit hall only to watch exhibitor badges walk away with all of the limited run items.

I'm hoping this gets better in the future, from Sansweet's comments I think they will.

Randy,

As much as I respect your opinion in most matters, I have to disagree that the doors opened when they should have.

Case in point:

The first panels of the day start at 10AM.
The doors do not open until 10AM.
It can take up to 30 minutes to get everyone inside.
They do not let convention goers into a panel after it has started.

No amount of explanation or justification can resolve that ridiculousness in my mind.

While I feel the crowd control was well intentioned, it was way too overboard in some circumstances.

Another case in point:

The Behind the Scenes room.
Never more than 3/4 full.
Yet we have to wait in the room across the hall.
Then when it is time to let people in, there has to be a whole to-do with blocking off the hallway as 100 people trickle from a holding room into a room that could hold 300+.

Why not just leave the doors to the room open and let people trickle in and out? These waiting rooms were ridiculous and unnecessary.

Like I said, well-intentioned, but the execution was a failure.

Also, nothing could get started on time because they don't let people into the rooms until 15 minutes before the show is supposed to start - sometimes not until it is supposed to start. Yet with some of these lines it takes 30 minutes to get everyone inside.

Then they are telling us to run and hurry up - as fast as we can. I don't think so. The room is sitting empty for an hour. It takes half an hour to get people into the room. Yet you don't open the doors until 10-15 minutes before the panel is supposed to start. And you're telling me to run and hurry up? Are you kidding?

I really would like to discuss the crowd control decisions that were made with the powers that be, because, there has to be something I am just plainly missing.

If you want to see a demonstration of how power corrupts - put it in the hands of a Star Wars nerd. (and I use the phrase 'nerd' to refer to myself as well, I was at CIV after all)

Just my thoughts.

Yeah, I hated that about C III. I can see them doing that for the Lucas panel. Which was a lot of sitting around for two hours, and the go up to the ball room. But for the smaller panels, they should just let people come in and out. Every panel I went to at CII wasn't full at all aside from Lucas.

hmmm...I volunteered for CIV and the panels that I 'worked' were open for people to come and go as they please. There was just one section to enter at, you could exit any door but had to enter in through one section. EXCEPT for the Animation Panel, that was closed because they were releasing never before seen trailers. That was closed for a reason. plain

As for the food, I would have to agree that if you walked outside into the courtyard there were more food vender with more food for your money. They even had smoothies and softserve ice cream. tongue

I will admit though that the information flow was lacking the first three days (wednesday thru friday). The official program sold out by friday morning and the FREE paper program (which was way more informational then the one you had to shell money for) didn't come out until Friday afternoon. No help for the few thousands of fans that got to be there on Thursday. raised_brow

As for comment on Anthony Daniels, I personally did not experience the 'bad' side of him. Any celebrity who stops the bus (they were bussed in from their hotel) at the sight of the HUGE entrance line and not only walks through the fan lines but stops to take pictures and meet and greet with almost each and everyone of them is ok in my book. Of course as much of a popular character he portrayed they will have picked up a few habits and expect some things but who wouldn't? They are used to having things a certain way (most actors do have slight cases of OCD anyways, it seems to be an untalked about requirement) and we just have to be a bit more tough skinned and remember that though they are 'normal' people they are normal people with perks! heh But then again, I was born and raised in Los Angeles and have some family in the business. So I suppose I've been privy to more than most. But then I do tend to see things from more than one point of view. Habit of thinking too much. cool

I personally am concerned that this may have been Kenny Baker's last public appearance. If not, I'm thinking that Celebration Europe might be. Dispite his being hospitalized and/or taken out by stretcher one or twice he always came back to Autograph Hall and finished giving his fans their autographs and pictures. He if anyone is a real trooper and should be acknowledged for his devotion to his fans. I have always been an R2-D2 fan and just watching how the actor is in real life only makes me appreciate him all the more!
applause

David Prowse should get Kudos as well.

At the 501st mixer, he was talking about how he needed a hip surgery right now... But, put it off for the 30th anniversary of Star Wars so he could attend the events.

But, I agree that Kenny Baker went above and beyond the call of duty to the fans and we should be sure that we appreciate the devotion of these actors to us, the fans.

I have to concur with Xenomaniac also Randy. I think what's getting lost in all this is the fact that stuff happened due to poor planning and training on the part of gen con. it does not mean the whole thing sucked. it's not an all or nothing thing as you seem to be making it out to be in regards to the ones who had some ligit issues. I could be wrong here but that's what it seems like you're saying.

you can't dismiss them or say some just want to complain, or to find fault or as you said, to say the show itself was horible as it was THEIR EXPERIENCE. if someone had issues throughout the show, they should keep it to themselves as they would be griping as you put it? how about the fact that some stuff didn't go right? I don't see the corelation between ones thoughts and how if there were some issues that took place (even though they didn't happen to you), they did happen to many. if you voice that, well then there's a label now attached to the persons voicing their thoughts and opinions, oh yeah...experience.

if someone had a bad experience it doesn't mean the whole thing was bad and even if it was bad for that person(i'm not refering to me)...so what! I don't know why there's this constant theme that everything was fine and dandy when in all reality for some it wasn't. that if you say anything could've been better or avoided, then you get labeled. that's not right or fair. to say something happened doesn't make them conplainers, gripers, sky is falling types, whiners...it's just what they experienced. no biggie. as Xenomaniac said just my thoughts. happy

I think that these cons are what you make of them. I had a great time because I planned on what I wanted to do. I knew seeing Seth McFalan would make my wife and I laugh hysterically and it did. I was very disappointed at the lack of major celebs signing, so I didn't get any autographs. I walked around, took pictures, had me and my wifes faces put on a Han and Leia picture, I bought a butt load of exclusives and I saw some cool stuff. I didn't attend Q&A's because the lines for some were too long and honestly, I wasn't there but for 2 to 3 hours at the most per day.

I had a good time. Gentle giant sucked, but you know....I got their exclusives.

I won't be going back to LA though. My wife and I both agreed we didn't like it at all. I'll go back to Indy or NY or somewhere like that. I think CV & CVI are suppose to be LA........right?

How anybody can feel that a SW Celebration was "horrible" is beyond me. If it was THAT bad for you, then you clearly were doing something wrong.

Actually they do destroy them, that is what makes them a limited edition. They are only available at the event and the quantity of each is limited to 250. It does not matter what type of paper they were printed on they are still prints and lucasfilm destroys the left overs.

I was told by a number of the artist that they were alread working on their Celebration Europe print and in some cases it is a nice companion piece to their CIV piece. Even if they choose to use the same design for Celebration Europe that would be a whole new print run of 250.

DO NOT COUNT OUT KENNY! I had heard from an extremely reliable source that Kenny had just undergone surgery and was suppose to be recovering quietly. Yet he still showed up at CIV and was there the entire time and made his panel as well. Tah tis why he may not have looked to good and had to be transported via a stretcher. He is a trooper and an inspiration to everyone.

I am a costumer so I guess I am the 5th type of fan, the one who actually spends days, weeks, months, sometimes years, re-creating the stunning costumes from these movies. I had a lot of things fall through on me at the last minute that could have caused me to have a terrible time but I had a wonderful time.

The good: Meeting all the people I have spent almost a year, planning and talking to online and on the phone about our costuming obssession and seeing all the great costumes, staying at the Omni(yes, ALL the celebs stayed there), Art show(I met a few artists who were so awesome and we talked about a lot), autographs(save for Carrie Fisher whose line was outrageous both days she was there, all the other lines were not long and we had a great time with all of them esp my 8 year old son), Celebration store(when we went, no lines but wish I would have known about the 50% off on Monday).

The bad: Everything was spread out and we missed alot due to getting out pics taken a lot and chatting with friends, food(quality and price), exclusives(I didn't even know about all of them), schedule of events released late, LAX(I hate it devil , missed my flight because of them), Panels(very crowded and started late or early sometimes), Goody bag(there were goody bags? because it was never explained to me), Gen Con(they didn't mail me my badges and they didn't answer 10 voicemails and 20 e-mails for 1 week. Then, they blamed the USPS for it not getting here.)

I did have an awesome time and would do somethings differently. Hindsight is always 20/20 but I hope they do a CV and CVI(crossing fingers that it is not in LA but more central like Indy). It was my first convention but many of my friends said that overall the convention was OK but what made it great was meeting all of our costuming friends and getting to hang out with them.

As for the costume contest, it clearly stated you had to print out the form and mail it in by a date in early May. They even had a few spots open on both days but you had to get there early(as soon as the convention opened at 10) to get on of those spots. I had to drop out of the Sunday contest and they were a few people very happy with that!!

My son saw Kenny vomitted one day while in line for another celeb but then later that night we saw him in the Omni's Noe Bar, drinking something from a wine glass(I am not saying it was alcoholic, just that it was in a wine glass). I would say it is a good bet Kenny is not going to be doing this stuff much longer and he was a trooper. As for Anthony Daniels, I heard nothing but good about him and he even made the comment on Monday, walking up to his table after his break, "What is the ugliest color in the galaxy? Orange." He was referring to the color of most of the OPX volunteer's shirts and many were in line that day for his autograph.
