I sell on ebay and use the figures and items I buy at the cons as a fill in while my main focus is selling costumes. What people don't understand is that most of these items are bought by people from overseas who do not have the opportunity to come to US and it is less expensive for them to spend 100 dollars rather than to pay thousands to attend. And most items I sell to is to England where the US dollar is delaveud by 50%. So, what is 100 dollars to us,to them it is only 50. These people love to buy from us for that reason, thats where Ebay comes in. Some of us just simply have a better business sense than others and actually pay for our trips by buying and reselling. Thats the nature of the beast, buy low and sell high or higher. After all,money makes money.

I've been one of the people to complain about Ebay and other resellers in the past (after CIII), but that was a very different case from CIV, as you'll see:
The only problems I have with people reselling con merchandise is a) When it's an extremely limited edition item that has a posted limit of X per person and you see people walking away with full cases. (This was the case with many things at CIII, even those that didn't have per person limits, after waiting 11 hours for that official store, I'll tell you, I was pretty pissed at people buying a dozen of something that was sold out by the time I got up there and then seeing it on ebay for three times the price! Make a buck, okay, but buy one or two extra, and give the rest of us who made the trip a chance!!)
or b) Things like the Gentle Giant exclusives, or the Boba Fett maquette, which thankfully I wasn't after either one, but by Sunday I encountered many fans who lined up quite a while to get one only to be told they were out of luck while they were popping up in threes, fours, fives, and sixes at exhibitor booths IN THE SAME HALL with mark ups in some cases of up to a hundred dollars! Again, it's all well and good to try to make a buck, but especially considering the early access exhibitors got to the hall, something just smells fishy there. It's really kind of despicable, IMO! A slap in the face to many of the fans who made the journey.

I was one who tried in vain to get one of the GG Yoda/R2 maquettes. Got in line at 5 in the morning and when we were let in, there was already a crowd of dealers at the GG booth. If there are plenty to go around such as the figures, then fine. But on something like the GG exclusives, it sickens me to see those on ebay when I could not even get one for myself.

I agree, exclusives with that kind of value...a fan value...should be left to the fans and not to a scalper. I am selling some of my figs right now, but those were obviously in plenty. Also, I bought a print at the Con and unfortunately when we tried to take it back, the stand said no refunds. We are selling it simply because we overspent. But I agree completely on the exclusives!!!

You and me both. I really wanted that Yoda/R2 maquette as well; but again Ebay is the answer with this kind of stuff. I don't thikn I would of made it if I stood in line. I wanted to see more of the con then just the lines of waiting for the maquette. I may just have to sit down and try and get one from Ebay.
That's my all time favourite piece I really want to add to my collection. I wish Gentle Giant didn't make these so exclusive.

If he ate at the con for all six days ...I CAN SEE that!!
No way man. Assuming he ate 5 meals a day all 6 days, it would still be more than $30/meal. There's no way.

Maybe he ordered one of everything on the menu.
Assuming the next one is at the LACC, I plan on doing a good chunk of my dining at the Original Pantry Cafe. I would be happy living on nothing but their sourdough bread for the duration of the con.

I did some "duty" by standing by the X-wing in the Fan Hall handing out wristbands from StarWars.com. People are paying $12+ for those wristbands on eBay! Had I known, I would've grabbed a few. I didn't even grab some for my friends.. I felt so inconsiderate for not doing that.

The Pantry cafe was really a pretty good deal. Although we were a bit confused when the slaw arrived at our table before our drink order, our bill for 4 was still under 50 bucks. The cheese steak sandwich rocked!
Actually compared to the surrounding restaurants the LACC food was not all that overpriced. It was pricey but not exhorbitant by concession standards, ok the 2.50 for a can of pop yes. The best deal was the spaghetti and meatballs w/garlic bread for under 10 bucks on sunday.
Also there was a taco shop right around the corner of the Fig, next to the car wash that you had to cut through to get to the parking lot. Very affordable but their hours sucked. They werer closed Sun and mon. Also I am used to taco shops out by me being open 24 hours.
I still can not see how one could spent a thousand dollars unless all you did was eat a the convention fromt eh time doors opened til they closed.

Two people eating breafast, lunch & dinner gets expensive in LA.
Our hotel charged about $23 per person for breakfast. We were in Century City and there wasn't much around us in the way of breafast places. Lunch at various loations averaged about $40.00 for both of us. Dinner was anywhere from $60.00 to $150.00. We ate at a few nice places some nights.
Breakfast = Approx $275
Lunch = Approx $240
Dinner = Approx $600
Add in snacks and $3.00 waters and a few drinks at the hotel pool & bar....VIOLA! $1,000 for food and beverages.

I want to chime in about the Ebay stuff too. Here is my take.
People get all aggrevated when they can't get comething at a con. Instead of saying "oh well, it was limited and like many others, I didn't get one", they whine about it. They blame everyone else. "The dealers and vendors got them all. People bought more than they were allowed. People got in early." At CIII, it was a fiasco. A lot of people waited 6 hours to get figures while others didn't want to wait and got none. I volunteered for 4 hours and got all the figures I was aloud. I worked for it and got them. People waited for hours and got them. The people who walked around complaining, didn't get them.
People complained about other fans walking away with cases, but most people had numerous badges. One friend of mine had a badge for himself his wife and 2 kids. He was allowed 16 figures. When he walked away with a sealed box, everyone gave him a hard time. He was allowed. He did nothing wrong. He wasn't a dirty scalper or an evil vendor. He was a guy who bought the allotment of Vader figures he was entitled to.
Things at CIV weren't much different. I lined up at CIV 1 hour before the doors opened everyday from Thursday to Sat. I got in, went to GG and got exclusives everyday. Yeah I missed out on the R2 Maquette, but they only sold 100 per day. Monday was the ONLY day that vendors were being put at the front of the line. I was one of the first 20 to 100 people in everday and there weren't any vendors there. It was an empty line. It quickly filled up with a wave of 100 people running for it though.
People who want to sell items they bought at CIV are entitled. Hell, look at the guys with the medallions. They were free and now they are selling for up to $2,000. Check the auctions on Ebay. It's ridiculous. I say good for them. I would like to make $2,000 on something I got for free. Everyone thinks that sellers and buyers are evil. Why? Because they have something you couldn't get at the con? If a buyer has the money and just wants to buy it for a few hundred above retail, he is entitled to do that. Look at how much our trips cost. Maybe someone just wanted the exclusive and didn't want to go to the con. I sold a bunch of stuff on Ebay. GG exclusives, Figures, Statues and oter stuff and I made some money back for me and my wife. I find it funny that in 5 days some of the "true collectors" weren't smart enough or fast enough to get 1 exclusive I got 5 of. It wasn't hard.
So thqat I don't get killed, I sold a bunch of GG stuff for a really reasonable price to people that couldn't make the con.

I don't consider myself a "true collector," but I do enjoy collecting the animated maquette line; and even I was unable to get my hands on the Yoda/R2 (as well as the Han/Luke Bust-Ups). Even with a crew badge to get in early, I got in line for GG and was jerked around as to where the line began was; by the time I could relocate to the right spot, I was about 100+ people back and missed out. I wouldn't exactly demean someone by saying they're not smart or fast enough to get what they wanted because of the fact that some times it was out of your control as to getting the exclusives.

I agree. I missed out on the R2 4 days in a row. I did get the others though. I'm talking about going for 5 days and not being able to get ANY. They gave up too easily.
GG was really aweful. They were changing lines, talking to people like they were trash and acting like "rock stars". GG are going to lose and have already lost a lot of customers because of their treatment towards fans.

As I said before, I have no problem with people trying to make a buck.
My big problem surrounding the Gentle Giant stuff was the fact that so many were popping up in vendor booths right at the convention at such outrageous mark ups when due to confusion or whatever else people who had waited in line for several hours could not get any. It was just a blatant money grab which, I know, that is capitalism, and I have no problem with capitalism or with people who want to spend several hundred extra on these things doing so, but it seemed unfair of the people involved to have taken the opportunity away from those who probably can't AFFORD the extra hundred dollars (since they spent all their money just to get there) and then to rub it in their faces so blatantly. Whether the "vendors" were allowed to the head of the line or not, the fact remains that some of them had multiples of the exclusives for sale in their booths on both Saturday and Sunday.
I don't know if it was poor line management on the part of Gentle Giant, other fans buying them and then selling them to the vendors, or vendors simply taking advantage of the early access their business afforded them to the exhibit hall to sneak over there as people were just beginning to file in -- probably some combination of these and other factors. It is fair to stand in line and purchase something with the intent of reselling it. My problem is when the initial purchase is done through questionable means, or when people whose only intent is to resell do so in big bulk numbers.
As an aside, I also can't imagine that the high-ups at GG would have warm and fuzzy feelings seeing that the exclusives they produced for fans and collectors were turning such a huge profit for third-party vendors in such large numbers. Especially in the same room where they're selling them for a smaller profit.
