As a meeting planning professional, I know the pitfalls of these things.
GenCon's gaming conventions are a pretty big deal. They include a lot of other activities besides gaming, and since they can draw on a much greater fan base (it is not, after all, only confined to SW games), there is a lot of interest there. Which is probably why LFL thought they could handle a Celebration.
Aye, that's what he said. And I'm throwing out some speculation that getting an idea of what is on offer in Oz was part of the reason behind a GenCon Oz. Although I guess it's a bit of a moot point.
Celebration Japan would be interesting but personally I'm already committed to something around then.
As to the main subject at hand, I'm not overtly surprised. It wasn't that things were a complete shambles, but after spending the Wednesday helping doing set-up with some of the vendors there were already the signs that things weren't as well run as they could be. There were other examples over the course of the weekend.

I can tell you there is alot of genres that are available to the gamer at a Gencon. Just about any game you can think of is there. They added video games in 2007 and that added and additional 1000 people last year. They expect more video game companies to show up to show case their products to the public this year. I was reading their GenconIndy website. They are selling out on special VIP passes already. I think Gencon is one of the few groups that can handle any large convention similar to Star Wars.

UPDATE 4: SciFiFann Reports:
"My wife supplied the temp staff for the Gen Con Celebration IV. The company she worked for ISSG was never paid for their services by Gen Con and they owed more than 150k for the 400 temp staff used.
The company she worked for closed due to the death of the owner last August but that money is still due to the bank that took over the receivables for the temp staffing agency. Gen Con is being sued by First Private Bank and Trust for the invoices due from supplying the temp staff for SWCIV. "
Sounds like Gen Con managed to screw over just about everyone at CIV.

Umm.... someone from the Temp company in question posted about that back in Nov/Dec last year on the TOS boards, in the thread you continually post ing. You have the next post directly after one of them.
