With only one hotel walking distance from the chicago convention center that would be a con not a pro for having it there in my belief. Not to mention not having eating places surrounding the convention center. I doubt their convention center food is good! The Indiana Convention Center foodstands were terrible. I just ate at the Circle Center Mall next to it when I went to CIII.

not to mention that there was plenty of unused space at C IV, so McCormick seems like overkill.

Jeez, really? Then I must say I would be strongly against having C5 (and other future Celebrations) held there.
I certainly hope LFL takes this into consideration during their planning stages.

Well, it didn't stop them from picking L.A., which had kinda the same problem -- especially where places to get something to eat was concerned. The fact that there's a dearth of hotel rooms and lower-price-range food places in and around both convention centers doesn't seem to faze them.

I think the whole 30th anniversary aura of Star Wars played heavily into selecting LA as the site for CIV. My guess is LFL wanted to celebrate 30 years in the same state that SW was born in. I could be totally off with this line of thinking, but it makes sense to me.
Moving foward, here's hoping that general hotel proximity and eating arrangements are more heavily valued by the Celebration producers.

I agree JediJustin! There needs to be alot of hotels, parking garages, and eating places near the convention center that gets picked. I am bad with directions and I would not want to be wandering around a city where I have never been to before and catch myself lost in a bad neighborhood with gangs and crime everywhere. I think a convention center with hotels, parking garages, and restaurants surounding it makes it easier for star wars fans. I know the Indy convention center is only a 12 minute drive from the Indianapolis International Airport. They are construction several hotels around the airport also. That would give fans an option to stay at a hotel at the airport then make a 12 minute drive via taxi, bus, or rented car to the convention center. Or they can choose one of the several hotels around the convention center that is walking distance and connected to the convention center with skywalks.
Plus 2,000,000 sq. ft. is overkill for a star wars celebration! You woud get lost just trying to found the rooms and exhibits you wanted to see. I doubt a star wars celebration will ever pull in 50,000 fans in one celebration. They have been average 28,000-35,000 people. Except for CI which I think was around 20,000 people.

My friend, echo-3 , Told me of the cost of a burger fries and an ice tea at the food court at CIV was $12 bucks. Here is to hoping that where ever it is next that its not costly just to eat like that.

I was thinking the Chicago convention center seemed a bit of an overkill myself (floorspace-wise).
Houston wouldn't be too bad (great for me ), as there is hotels within walking distance to the convention center as well as parking lots all around (above and below ground) ... but the downfall of having it in Houston would be the weather as in May it does get a bit hot down here (one website says an average high is 85 degrees in May, but I know it has been hotter than that).
How was the weather in Indy or Denver at the other Celebrations?

McCormick Place (Chicago)
New York
Los Angeles
Denver
Indy
George R Brown (Houston)

Weather in Indy for C3 was terrible. It snowed a bit one day and was cold, rainy, and windy almost the entire time.
The again, it was held at the end of April, so we weren't expecting 75-degree days and perfect sunshine the whole weekend either.

Yeah if they have it in May of whatever they choose it Indiana is alot different weather wise. It is usually 70-75 degrees. Nightime temperatures are around 50 degrees. May does have rain but then again you can't predict weather. No one can do that. Having a convention between January thru May would be bad. Just like having one in October thru Decembr is a bad idea. May or June is the best time in my opinion.

I am not in favor of having it in Houston, New York, Denver, or Washington D.C. I like the central located idea better like Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis or Chicago.

I doubt they would even consider Houston anyway, as it seems like if there is any kind of "big" convention (example: Wizard-Con) or "nation-wide" advertised event (example: Eric Clapton Crossroads Festival) it's usually held in Dallas.

It looks like Cincinnati has a convention center that is similar size or slighty larger than Indy's center if they don't pick Indy. I notice Louisville convention center is only 300,000 sq. ft. That is smaller than Indiana Convention Center.
If they decide a 2010 convention then Indy will be done with expansion! Says it will be 1.2 million sq. ft. for the building on their website. 750,000 exhibit space.

I'll be attending NYCC this weekend. Steve Sansweet has a panel discussion on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm, so hopefully he has some C5 news to share with us.
I'll post my findings from his panel session here as soon as I get back from the con on Saturday night.
