The real problem is that they have to find a convention center capable of holding 35-40000 people. There aren't that many!

I'm likely to go if it's drivable but if I have to fly, I'm more likely to go to the Europe one and have a vacation, too.

I've gotten to the place where I actually don't care WHERE it is. As long as the job situation gets even a little better, I'm going. Period. happy

BTW: I checked into trains; WAY better than flight prices. It's a much longer trip, but for people who aren't in a real hurry, all that scenery is nice.

The two I'm hoping for are either Chicago or LA. LA would be perfect. I could just do Greyhound like I did last year. Chicago would be cool too, 'cause the Amtrak route to that city goes through some of the most georgous country in the world, it'd give me a chance to see the US (never been outside the West Cost)...it even goes right by the Grand Canyon! shock I wouldn't want it in Indy, 'cause I've seen enough video from CII and CIII to not like the layout-or the size. I'm a bit crowd-phobic, which is why I LOVED the LA convention center. I actually got to breathe! From what I've heard, the Chicago Con Ctr is the largest in the US.

Bring it on! dancing

Yes, it is the largest convention center in the U.S. The problem is just as in L.A., hotel rooms that are close by are in short supply (the Hyatt Regency is the only hotel in really close proximity, for instance). But there is plenty of meeting space, definitely.

Helen echos my exact feeling on the #1 factor in determing C5's location:

The amount of available hotel space within the immediate area to the con.

To me, this is the single most important aspect that the location of C5 must adhere to.

The ability for fans to stay within walking distance (or a very short drive) to the con trumps all other considerations IMO.

If there were loads of hotel space in LA during CIV (we stayed at the Figueroa for CIV) that were close to the con, I would have no issues at all returning there for C5. We were lucky to have stayed so close to the LACC, which made CIV a very stress-free experience for us (compared to our C3 trip where we stayed over 20 minutes away from the Indy CC).

The peace of mind that comes with staying so close to the CC is worth any longer traveling distance or higher cost IMO.

Were the prices for the rooms reasonable and were there a variety of prices for the different hotels within walking distance to the CC or were they all ridiculously high? Now that you mentioned that, i would rather be in a good walking distance from the center, you dont have to pay for parking at a lot or pay for a cab that way. I'm sorry if i'm bothering you with my questions, i'm just really curious

We stayed at the Holiday Inn down the block and it was $200 a night for a footlocker size room!!

Not bothering at all!

There were only a couple of hotels (the Figueroa and the Holiday Inn) that were within reasonable walking distance to the L.A. Convention Center. That's the problem that L.A. has. Everything else is a shuttle, trolley or cab ride away, unless you like to walk happy .

Price-wise, no, downtown L.A. is not a cheap place to stay. No big city is (Chicago isn't, definitely). I think I paid $185 for the Holiday Inn. Fig was cheaper, but not by much, I don't think.

For Chicago, unless you are lucky enough to get a room at the Hyatt Regency by McCormick Place, you will have to find alternative means of transportation (no doubt there will be a shuttle again), as most of the Chicago hotels will be a couple of miles away. Actually, the lack of hotel rooms means a lot of public transportation is available, including a shared cab service.

I think Chicago will be great. I live in LA but of three Celebrations i attended (I didn't go to Denver) it was by far the worst. I loved Indy. LA is not a con friendly town. There's nothing to eat near by, nothing to do after hours. It's just no good. I'd love to go to Celebration Australia. I would also prefer three years between each Celebration. They do cost money.

I think that helping out at the fan tables was one of the best ways of meeting people. You're just sitting there waiting for people to come to you.

People from the fan-fic forums managed a breakfast at the IHOP at CIV, but our second meeting got canceled by the bomb scare on Friday night. If you want to meet people, you just have to pick a time and place ahead of time.

How annoying that the hotel space near the Chicago convention center are so limited. OTOH, Lake Shore Drive is a nicer place to walk than downtown LA........well, except that it's an expressway. I haven't been there in awhile.

ok so i need to expect to pay almost $1,000 in hotel rooms for the whole stay, if they end up picking a big city, which will probably happen. That hurts just thinking about it
