The $4000 to $5000 estimate that someone gave you above seems a little absurd to me, but they could have spent a lot of money at the con or been in an extremely bad location for them.

Not absurd at all. Perhaps you didn't read all the posts on the subject - there are a myriad of ways to spend a lot of money at a Celebration. One big thing -- when you come with your family, or even if it's just your spouse, they are probably not too interested in sharing a room with a whole bunch of people who are basically strangers. So it's full price for the room. I'm not a sharer, either. My hotel bill was close to $1,000 each time, for II, III and IV. The plane tickets for II and III were close to $500, as I recall. There's $1,500 right there and I haven't even gotten to the convention center yet. Where, of course, there are all those little souvenirs.... How much was the concert ticket at II? And the evening with Carrie Fisher at IV? Things add up.

For some folks, this is the highlight of their vacation periods. I never treat Celebration as a "weekend thing" -- since I have to travel to it, I consider it a vacation and bring money accordingly. Heck, I even shopped at the mall LOL.

If you can find a way to get to a Celebration mate go for it. It's one of the best experiences I've had. C3 and C4 we both great and I met a lot of great people. Although GenCon couldn't run a bath in my opinion they did a much better job with C4 then C3. but I'm not going to get into that rant.

The best way to save a bit of money on the con most people have covered. Sharing a hotel room saves a HUGE amount of money and it really is just a place to recharge (Sleep and shower). The only other thing I can really think of is buy food form outside the convention centre and bring it in a backpack (Snack bars, cans of drink, etc.) The food prices in the convention halls can be a little steep (Steep = WAY OVERPRICED)

I can't really give you a breakdown of the costs for me as I'm flying half way across the world for a celebration and the airfares alone usually match what some people set aside for the whole con.

Good luck with getting there mate.

I am unemployed right now, so even the thought of going is just a dream right now. but if it is in Chicago or somewhere around Detroit (hey, how about Detroit? we could certainly use the business lol) and i can drive there, and find the money for a ticket and a cheap hotel room, id be willing to live on PB&J for a week just to be able to go.
With the shape Cobo is in? I certainly hope LFL isn't that desperate! wink

And I agree - sharing a room is the way to go. I would never do a con without a few roomies to split the hotel bill.

(Also, if you drive, don't forget to factor in parking. In Indy I've paid as much as $22 a day - and friends in L.A. were paying something like $48 a day. Granted, these are at-the-hotel prices, so there are probably cheaper options.)

Between travel, hotel, food/booze, swag, etc, I spent in the $1000-1500 range, so I would suggest having that much saved up. But each person is different. Different hotels, food choices, etc, all factor into what you will be spending. Plus the extra costs like parking, TAX (especially in the cities that are in the running), extra tickets for events, etc will need to be considered as well.

I'm probably on the opposite spectrum. I think including hotel costs, travel, and everything else, I only spent around $600. I usually don't buy anything other than food at cons though. Merch, autograph tickets, special events, etc. can quickly up your cost.
