When we're trying to write down stuff in meetings to create an 'action plan' (for lack of a better term) we use a flip chart, but I like chalkboards best. tongue

Here's some stuff we seem to be agreeing (for the most part) about and that it should be something we mods look more closely at. Correct me if I'm wrong on any of these, and let me know if I need to add anything:

1) Sexual harassment and the Pic threads, or the general tone of harassment in some threads or with some people

- Any time a user feels harassed, PM a mod. This is the first and most general way to handle this, and always will be. We'll make sure that users in the pic thread are being respectful, but if you're creeped out by something you must realize a) you're putting your picture in a thread that's basically there for comments and compliments, etc. and b) some people take more offense than others, so we go back to letting us know. If someone pursues you from it, or you received unwanted attention...let them know to cut it out. Then let us know that you let them know and we'll handle from there. We can't mod things that happen offsite. We can watch for it here, and we can take action when they bring it here, but again... we have to know. Posting things like the "Team Creepy" gif doesn't really help the situation. You've given someone a schtick and it's harder for the mods to know who's kidding and who's not, and where exactly the "creepiness" extends to seriousness. On innuendo, the line will typically be blatant sexual type stuff like "measuring our penises on a scale of 1 - 6" will still be over the line. I agree that we've gone a little farther down the road than we feel comfortable with in terms of the some of the stuff that gets posted these days. That's not a "change in rules", but a change in tone. We want the JCC to be fun, and no, it shouldn't be pure Disney, but if people feel uncomfortable or it's too close to the line it needs to go. We're not Disney, but we're not the Playboy channel, either.

2) Watching all threads more closely and being more visible with warnings and modding, making sure that moderating is consistent and fair, even to users considered in the "in crowd"

The comments on inconsistency and some things needed to be modded that aren't are great. We've been thinking this for a while, and I'll admit I agree. And it's not always that it's judgment call, it can be that the time has past and the thread has sank until someone ups it, or that it wasn't one picked up on, or many other reasons. Of course, sometimes it is a judgment call and we're all human and make mistakes. I think this is where you guys come in. Feel free to PM any of us (I get a lot of these PMs and they are very helpful) and say, "how is this even remotely acceptable?"

3) Moderators need to be a part of their community, rather than a separate entity

4) Moderating more extreme statements about groups of people that are more pointedly directed at users that may be posting in a thread

We also agree that looking at the "insult the person I don't agree with" mentality is getting slightly out of hand and will be paying closer attention to the serious threads to facilitate, as well as make sure they don't get out of hand.

We agree we should try to issue more subtle in-thread warnings or just be present in the serious threads instead of only coming to the rescue and post warnings when things have already gotten out of hand.

5) Make sure we keep the more casual and even silly stuff

Even within a thread with a serious discussion, a little (with emphasize on little) bit of silly posting can contribute to the thread in its own way by keeping the discussion light-hearted.

6) Make sure we watch for the distinction of what makes a thread on drugs or alcohol against policy in threads

7) Maybe have a calendar of events for JC things like Pirate's Day, AFD, etc. Games and contests (also the "Top 100"-series) are considered a valued part of the JCC.

I think the idea that 'Moderators need to be a part of their community, rather than a separate entity' has been brought up too

Edited to catch up on our discussion. Am I being clear on the tolerance part?

I think the issue of tolerance should be something that reaches beyond just specific groups like religion, race or political affiliation and should be (as I voiced in the other thread) tolerance of other people's ideas, opinions and beliefs, be they of these categories or not. I know the policy is to discuss the topic or the point not the user in these instances but I don't always see this practiced.

If you're talking about ad hominem attacks, I'm trying to encapsulate that there. There's a fine line, because sometimes you need to understand a person themselves in a discussion to see where they're coming from but it should never come off as an attack. I've had my share of editing those, and agree we need to do more the "talk about the post, not the poster" in more serious discussions and livelier debates.

I want to reiterate here my point from another thread that 5) is superfluous and perhaps detrimental.

If 2), 3) and 4) are implemented and emphasized, 5) will almost never (or seldom, or much less frequently) be an issue
