An in-thread reminder, or an edit where warranted (I won't say it doesn't happen. I just haven't seen it in the cases that I've observed), would go a long way to making conversations in serious threads more palatable to all. The kinds of things I'm talking about generally don't gall me, personally. However, I have had more than a few people tell me that they avoid those "serious threads" like the plague because they just turn into low-grade flaming and baiting threads. That's hardly always true, but the perception didn't come from nowhere. (does that count as a double-negative?)

Along those lines a "helpy helper" (lacking a better term here) nudge to a mod would be better in a thread than in PM as well... that way we could all be aware... of whatever, you know?

I've only called on a mod once to put a stop to something I found offensive, Kristie. I'm horrible like that. I admit it. Normally, I just choose to walk away. Even when one user went off on me personally (he got edited anyway), I just let it go. I've tried to calm people down where I can. Sometimes I'm successful. Sometimes not so much. It would have to be pretty bad for me to actually call a mod in, though.

Maybe I should rethink that attitude. thinking

harps, I have always been unclear on the extent to which users should report other people's issues to mods. And especially doing so in threads... I just have always had the impression that defending other users and 'tattling' to the mods is perceived as a really negative thing, so I kind of try not to do it. Even though I often feel like I should stick up for people... I don't know, it's a confusing subject to me. I don't know if what the mods want from us is different than what the (negative) popular pressure about 'helping' mods is.

On a slightly different tangent--the level of conversation in "we r srsly" religious threads is often painfully low. I usually know the things are there, but I wouldn't mind a "helpy-helper" nudge at all--especially this time of night when I'm likely to be on, and might be spending most of the evening posting in some focus group or something. tongue

That said, any user who wants to play Senate mod and go shake up the monotonous rhythm of "Is not!" "Is too!" in those threads would have my undying gratitude. Adding anything would be an improvement . . . religious themes in the arts. Contrast the modern political legacy of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. Do people think that Nancy Reagan's patronage of astrologers alienated the religious right. The pope wears funny hats, lol.

I don't care. Anything different.

In the JCC, I usually don't report something unless it has to do with me, personally, and I'm certain it's a TOS offense--meaning, I don't really report the borderline stuff. It doesn't usually bother me, anyway. That's only happened a handful of times. I'm certain, though, that even if it was borderline, the mods would listen and offer any kind of advice or reassurances they could. And in most cases there's no way anyone would know, so I don't see why anyone would worry about tattling... Unless, of course, they do it all the time and get on the mods' nerves. tongue

I don't remember, Melissa. I just remembered that you kept saying "you're wrong" and I kept saying "nuh-uh" a lot. There were links and tl;dr posts, too. Funnily enough, no one baited Christians in that thread. I'm pretty sure we killed it, in fact.

Maybe that's the solution. When things get heated, just go into the thread and start having a tl;dr rational discussion that's completely separate from the argument, pretending as if it's not happening. tongue

Anytime. I had a PM this morning before I got a chance to get in there from AJ on something, and it was something that needed attention.

You guys pretty much know the rules. If you PM us and we don't think it's something we should look at, we'll tell you why we didn't act on it. But in a forum as big as JCC and as fast moving, especially in discussions like religion or any of the more controversial subjects, we can't be everywhere.

To me, the negative connotation comes more when someone doesn't understand the rules and seems to be doing it just to get the "look I could be a mod" attention. Those are fairly easy to spot, and really, really rarely happen anymore. If I got a PM from anyone in the JCC, even if I thought they MIGHT be a helpy helper, I'd pay attention. In the end, it just shows you care.

Also, if you look at one of us JCC mods aren't on, and it's something that you know would be edited like flaming, porn, language, or even a thread that has gotten out of hand, PM a mod on the MODS ONLINE list.

The nice thing about "tattling" is that mods aren't going to out you for it. I know I've PMed mods in the past about things that were ostensibly fun drama things, but I really thought might need a look at by a mod. It's not like they're going to go in there and post sj told me you guys should cool off, and I doubt, unless it's a helpy helper situation (of which there are few these days, like Roo said) the mods are going to be annoyed with the tip-off, especially if it does need a look at and had gone unnoticed. And I think most of the regular posters these days have good discretion these days about what needs mod attention.

Oh, I'll just add my two cents since I'm here. tongue

I'll agree with Dani. If someone PM's a mod about something going on, it's cool. I would assume at least one mod is watching the situation but, if not, it's good to know that someone is willing to just give one of them a nudge. Contrary to what some very odd posters' think, PMing a mod will never put you on their 'radar' or get you in trouble.

I think Christianity is a good target for many people here simply because many people want to have a beef with any religion that says, "If you don't believe this, you're not going to heaven." Now, that's true with every religion but because Christianity is so prevalent both on the boards and in the US in general (I can't speak to Europe, I'm too lazy to look up the religious breakdown stats right now tongue ). As a mod, I always had to take a step back and be objective with those religious discussions because it's offensive to me to read some of those threads bashing or making fun of Jesus. But there have been threads about other religions as well so "we're" fair game.

I'll totally agree that we should stick to moderating comments that are directed at the person rather than the religion. i.e. "If you're a Christian, you're stupid."

All that said, there will always people people offended when you're talking about their religion. I'm sure someone can find that ever so delightful Comms thread where we had a huge debate when someone posted the Mormon underwear in a thread. There were some Mormons incredibly offended that it had even been posted. My view is, if it's 'Googleable', it shouldn't be prohibited here. I mean, I'd be personally offended if someone posted a suggestive picture with Jesus and Mary Magdalene. But, others probably wouldn't care.

It all comes down to the fact that this is a public messageboard. There are all religions, ages, races, etc. posting here. There are lines of decency and of appropriateness, but, overall, we have to understand that just because it's "our religion" being analyzed/slammed/picked apart, it's not a personal attack.

My view is, if it's 'Googleable', it shouldn't be prohibited here.

I would probably say 'Googleable' and within the TOS. I could probably Google some pretty inappropriate pictures that would earn bans if they were posted here.

Also, we have to take the site owners' views into account as to what is allowed. Deity + damn still definitely isn't.
