[NEW IDEA] Thoughts on a JCC calendar?

I don't know how this would work or not, but I saw a google calendar linked on another page.
(I don't know how to do it either).
Would it be good to have a JCC calendar?
Something to tell of upcoming events - Like talk like a pirate day, or Canadian Boxing Day, or birthdays, or New Gauntlet Game starts, or such?
I don't know that there is a need for it, but it could bring interesting things.
We could add on interesting days, such as backwards Wednesday or Parody Friday (like casual day) and if people want to avoid them, then we can say : It's on the calendar.
It might inspire people to come up with some creative ideas and threads?
You could also give days as prizes or such so that today is officially DarthStinky day or such.
Feedback? Ideas?
EDIT: I'll go ahead and lock this one too. I like this idea and it's definitely something we'll explore somewhere in th future once we have worked out some technicalities.

1. I think it's a great idea.
2. Would need like board code changes, I think, which apparently requires an act of God (known as zerosleep around here).
3. There better not be Talk Like a Pirate Day anywhere on that damned calendar!

Or it could be posted on the index thread as a text list that only features days with "events" on them.

We don't need board changes if someone uses an offsite one and just links to it in the header or something.
I know that they can do links in the JCC header, but we don't take much advantage of it, like some of the other boards do.
And if we have "Walk Like A Submarine Guppie Day" then we need the pirate day too.
EDIT: Or Grant's way.
As long as we wouldn't lose the previous year's stuff. Some days could be only for this year, and other ones more permanent additions...

Can Laker & Dodgers game be added onto this schedule?  Anyways, a calendar is still a good idea. At least I'll know ahead of time when the evil (ie: Talk Like A Pirate Day) will arrive.

Only if the Yankees get on there as well. But my thing is that wouldn't the banner have to change quite frequently then? A different banner for every holiday thats on there. That would really be annoying to the eye, and hard on the mods to keep up with it.

BTW, I meant to say Jello's idea up there,not Grant's but I can't edit it anymore.
I don't think banners would HAVE to change for everything, but if someone cared enough to make a banner for a certain day, the administration has been pretty free flowing with the JCC banners lately, and able to change them pretty randomly.
While I would support allowing religious Holidays on a calendar, I think it is still a good idea to keep the banners non religion specific.
A user can choose not to celebrate a holiday that is posted on the calendar, but can't really choose not to look at the banner.
I would actually LOVE to have people from other countries and religions posting their Holidays in a calendar like this. It would be a fun way to learn about other religions and cultures. Then hopefully someone would start a thread that talks about what that day means, and what they do.
I don't see pirates as being offensive in the banner BTW.

I dunno about the sports thing, maybe grand finals and the like, but yes yes yes to this idea. Even if it's a line of moving text at the top of the page saying 'Today is [insert day here]!' and a link to the Calendar would be awesome.

I think this sums up my only complaint with this idea. (Not the idea of merely having a calendar, which is nice.) Basically: who gets to decide what days happen when? People get mad about celebrating Pirate Day, you can bet they won't like other theme days being tossed in at random. I'm not sure this would really work in practice, and it may be something divisive, or a point of contention.
Personally, I think the banners and icons available for special events now are sufficient, and adding more theme days is a bad idea.

I don't expect that banners or icons would be necessary for any of this to work.
And in order to get something on a calendar, someone would have to approve it, so we don't get "Throw A Christian To A Lion Day" stuff.
I don't think putting every home and away game for teams would be considered 'fun' for most people, but making sure the World Series, and the World Cup, and whatever other major sports events people mentioned would be appropriate.
And I guess that is a pretty good point to add is the toleration of differences.
If I put Pirate day on the calendar, Brian may say he hates pirate day (and he does) and say in jest about refusing to let it be put there, but he's not going to seriously try and cause trouble or be upset if it does get put on there. Someone who goes that far is probably one of those negative attention people Rhonda is talking about in the other thread.
I believe the JCC's primary purpose is to have fun with other users who just happen to also like StarWars.
I don't really foresee that there would be any problems, but I think I understand your concern.

Well without banners and icons I'm not sure how a day gets implemented? Would it just be encouraging posters to spend the day posting threads on topic x? In which case the front page of JCC just gets spammed with a plethora of x related threads (like on Pirate Day).
