Surely this has been brought up in other discussions but still, some questions I'd like to throw out here:
Do brand new users annoy you with their naiveness?
Do oldbies annoy you with their bitterness?
Is there a distinction in how these two group are being treated? Should there be?
How can we make newbies feel more at home in the JCC?

Honestly, I don't notice this separation. I've never been treated any differently by anybody.
If somebody comes in immediately posts a thread titled "HAY GUYS I ReAlLy LiEk StaR WaRz!!! " They're going to get ridiculed a bit, but I'd say that's fairly normal for any internet community.
I was welcomed fairly easily. I don't feel I was treated any differently.

Yeah. I'm one of those people who doesn't notice much of an issue with the olbies/newbies thing. There are some olbies who are entirely too impressed with themselves, but I don't think that has anything to do with their registration dates.

I only notice noobs when they're horribly noobish or if they make a mistake that only a noob would make.

Yeah, n00bs are only annoying when they make themselves out to be the newbie poster child. There will always be a newbie vs. oldbie sentiment around here and I think that's fine. It's all in good fun as I think anyone who posts on a Star Wars messageboard can't possibly be serious about flaunting their registration status. I hope.

Anyone who brings up the "newbie" thing registered in '99 and can't be taken seriously anyway.

I've been here for almost 4 years and I still consider myself a nOOb. I see more nOObs whine about being nOObs, than I see oldbies pointing out that they're nOOBs. At least nowadays anyway. I don't really consider it to be a serious issue either way.
If someone that's fairly new can't take a joke like that, than their skin is way to thin as it is. There's a certain user that loves to whine about the most mundane non-issues in comms(including whining about certain head admins) that is a perfect example of this.

I find it interesting that the oldest registration date in the thread so far is 02.
I do feel sometimes like there is an exclusionary bonding between oldbies and the odd time of discrimination based on reg date but nothing to make a stink about really. It annoys me honestly but its infrequent enough that I honestly forget about it for the most part.
That and I can't remember the password for my old '01 account. Though I prefer this screenname anyways.

I really dont even notice newbies unless they make a scene about it. Although I think that some people have something against new users why I dont know...

I honestly never notice this. A joke or two here about n00bs (which I admit to having made ) but it's completely non-serious. Kind of a self-mockery much of the time from oldbies, actually.
The only n00bs who actually get ridiculed are people who act the part... kind of regardless of reg date

Yeah, I've got to say, of all the forums here, the JCC deals with this problem the least, I think.

If it was just about looking at reg dates I guess I would be popular in the YJCC, but I still don't feel at home in that forum, and that's why I rarely post.

Yeah, I'm both an oldbie and a newbie, simultaneously.
Question: does anyone use the newbie adoption system? It looks like such a good idea on paper, but I wonder if it's utilized.

RE: Newbies vs Oldbies

I feel that there is an issue concerning Newbies and Oldbies. This happens in most of the forums, so saying it's not in the JCC is overlooking the issue. It happens because that's how it is when someone enters an already made community. Its tough to break into the community and get seen for who you are as a person.
When I first started posting in the JCC most of my posts were overlooked. In fact it didn't seem to matter what I was saying, no one ever read them or commented back. So a user then thinks "What's the point? I'm talking to myself." So I left the JCC for a bit and went back to Lit and the EUC where things were slightly more welcoming (at least in the EUC).
Eventually I meandered back to the JCC, lurking for awhile, and then befriended Brian. He invited me to the JCChat on AIM and I got to know some of the people. Suddenly my posts were being replied to. I didn't change anything in the quality of my posts, so it appeared to me that the JCC was something that you needed to be invited into by someone who was already part of the community.
So the disconnect occurs when people are ignoring the new people. Ignoring posts, questions, posting links to the WNU forum right after someone new posts. It happens and that chases people away. New blood isn't a bad thing. Some new people ignore that or thrive on it and thus keep going anyways, but more often the users either leave the forum and take up residence in the SWC or another forum.
The WNU adoption program works. It would be great if more people from the JCC would adopt newbies. I think we could get some quality posters this way. I learned a lot about the boards by going through the program, things I would've stumbled over if I hadn't gone through the program and it does make a person feel welcome to be here.
I think there should be a new users thread in the JCC. The EUC has one and it works wonders. It gives a person a place to post right away before understanding the workings of the rest of the forum. People then help that person out when they have questions and it makes the coming into a new community a much easier progress.
Knowing the JCC that type of thread could turn into something its not meant to be, but if the reaction of posters such as yourself in that thread is to be helpful and set aside the zingers while someone learns it could set the precedent for how the rest of the JCC treats that thread.
