Yeah, the "Grubbian" physics were too weird. I never managed to get into it.
Dragonstar is a good sci-fi D&D setting. Definitely recommended.

Actually, the big problem was that the people writing the suppliments didn't bother reading the core rules box. Had they done so, some of the stupider mistakes and inconsistencies might have been avoided. One of the other biggest problems was the assumption that the party would want to gain control of the super SpellJammer ship. I didn't want to go that direction as a player or GM, and neither did any of my players.
"Under the Dark Fist" with the Vodoni Empire was a great adventure, once you had characters capable of surviving it.
Oh well. I enjoyed it. It was to the point that I built 3D models out of foam-core board of most of the ships. Also reassessed the stats of all the ships based on that.

I never read anything but the core box. I didn't hate it, I just didn't like some of the concepts like crystal spheres and flammable space or whatever that was
My friend got the 4th books, I don't like it

Yeah, the system took some getting used to. Was based on some old Greek notions of astronomy (Plato?).
I was told in solumn tones that I was buying the last copy that my hobby store would have for the next 2 weeks until restock arrived. When I walked out the door, I heard someone asking about one at the counter. I walked quietly out the door. There are 3 Barnes&Nobles in this city, and a ton&a half of hobby shops. If they really wanted one that badly, they could have pre-ordered. Worst thing that happens is they have to wait 2 weeks.
On a different note, I had the rare distinction of having my backside handed to me by a white-belt today. No one bothered to tell me beforehand that he was a 1st-degree blackbelt in a different system. That make sparring fun... Normally the dojo acknowledges blackbelts from other schools by starting them off at Green. Oh well.
One of the kids was in trouble for starting fights at school. He got to fight everybody in the dojo today. It was test day. There were 12 students testing, 4 blackbelts judging, and two other brownbelts. He was tired by the end of it. 10-year olds have lots of energy, but there's a limit. Going up against everyone from 8 to 60 will burn through a lot of that energy. Maybe he won't be interested in fighting any more...

Spelljammer, schmelljammer. Planescape > other settings.
So I, uhm, got 4E. I will have to playtest it but it's really a whole different beast, as Flare says. There are some bits I like and some bits I dislike, but first of all I want to see how it behaves in play.

I just tried 4E D&D. Right now, there's a learning curve, of course. I'm thinking it's still gonna take a a while to plot out characters. Maybe not as long as 3.5 with splatbooks galore, but at least as long as Core rules.
Still plenty of looking up to do. Instead of 'how does grapple work again?' It's now 'How does [insert power or move here] apply? I doubt that will change much, even once most of the rules are committed to memory.
They've also gotten rid of the 5 ft. step, as well as portions of classes. I was playing an Elf cleric in Core rules, so I rolled one up to see differences. No more domains for clerics, everyone gets the same powers list to choose from. You can take a feat or two which gives you an extra ability associated with said deity, but the variation one might see amongst clerics with domain choices appears to be gone.
Maybe it'll grow on me, but it seems, like jts said (and like Flare did ), just a whole other beast.

yeah feats and class abilities were bad enough, now everything has powers too and you have to remember those effects.
Edit: as for grapple and other obscure/complicated rules for 3.5, Rules Compendium is a godsend for that.

Well, we haven't started out 4.0 games yet because we're ending the storylines of our 3.5 games.
Have built my lvl1 4.0 cleric character though, and have to say, "WOW, This system is very different from the last one"
Not sure I understand how it is all supposed to work. Figure playtesting will do that.

I don't own previous editions of D&D (well, first edition but hardly touched it :P ), and I've played NWN 1 and 2 so have an idea of 3 and 3.5, but I saw the 4.0 books the other day in Borders and was highly tempted. I might pick these up later

Well, hopefully the video game will be better than DDO. That got old and boring very quickly.
Run through Quest 1. Then run through it again on difficulty B. Then again on C. Then again on D.
...
zzz
Oh, you need a rogue to get through this quest. Glad we told you? Good. Of course, we could have told you before you were 1/2 way through, but that would have been too easy...
Now run the quest again...

Yesterday's session went great. Three 24th level character (elf rogue, human fighter/barbarian, human fighter) and their cohorts (half-elf rogue/tempest, human fighter/cleric of Bahamut) against a Xorvintaal great wyrm red dragon (actually a red-tinted golden dragon, as in my campaign's myhtology the first red dragon was a traitor golden and he's the one they are fighting).
It should have been a carnage (no spells, limited healing and terrain favorable for the dragon) but my players played tactically and they managed to survive (barely) and hurt the dragon. The cleric managed to survive the 28d10 fire breath almost unscathed thanks to a very clever combination of spells and immunities. Very fun session, probably the best in months.
We will continue the combat next week, and they are expecting reinforcements (human wizard, human barbarian, dwarf fighter, half-elf bard). Wanna place any bets?

RE: Gamer's Social Thread

Well, I've been throwing the group through a couple of the SW Adventure ideas posted a couple threads down while the D&D GMs prepare to wrap up their 3.5 games.
Most recent mission was to rescue the planet from the swoop-bike gangs. They went storming in. Killed three of the bikers right off the bat as soon as they were in town. Wookie brawling beast (replacing the Defel melee beast who was smoked by one of his own grenades when he flubbed a roll to toss said grenade down a Ranat hole) proved to be just has horrifying as imagined. Then bullied the local peace officer into deputizing them, and then used the wookie as bait for Gang retaliation and their starship to attack anyone the wookie didn't pulp. When they found the gang rally point, they targetted the leader with their turret. Even with +4D of dodge for scale, they totally pulped his speeder when he flubbed his bike's Hull and his own STR to resist damage. The intel agent then shot the other lieutenant in the head and surrendered the gang.
The lieutenant then gave a pathetically implausible tale of following the herd, even though he new better, and not being able to leave when he wanted to, and trying to minimize the damage from within the system... And the party bought it. They thought I was having a weak GM momment. They not only bought it, they took pity on him and took him aboard their ship when they left the next day. (Giving the "biker lieutenant" plenty of time to comm his report to CompNOR, complete with the party's likenesses, IDs, Aliases, and ship's ID signals. While he abandoned most of his equipment as too dangerous, he was happy to help the party any way he could for the next mission.
The party took a load of cargo from the Biker-problem Agro world to a more industrialized planet, the Squib merchant arranged a massive profit, which they used to upgrade the ship for the first time since salvaging it. While they were arriving on the planet, they stumbled onto the pirate ship chasing slaver and managed to save the two pods of Wookies and Talz'. Then had to land on a world under Imperial juristiction, which promptly proceeded to impound the wookie and Talz slaves as property (making the wookie PC very angry). They broke the slaves out of the high-security wing of the hospital by dividing the squads of stormtroopers up and then pounding the stuffing out of them. And then they took everyone back to the rebel base.
OH, the stuff this is going to set up...
