Ah, sorry katana... it's not the greatest time to be a star wars fan. Not as bad as the late 80's/early 90's, but still...

I enjoy D&D 4.0, even if my dice have no sense of drama and are trying to kill me!

4.0 is great. I mean, they changed a great deal from 3.0 and 3.5, but it still feels like DnD... at least in my opinion.

I have come to realize that I am burnt out on gm-ing, which sucks, because I can't play any other way. I love the rpg, but I need a break from running games. No one else I know is willing to run and I haven't been able to get a live game going because no one wants to take the reins, not to mention my online game is dead, because I can't bring myself to post...

Well, I just needed to vent to people who I wouldn't have to explain to what a GM is. Thanks. happy

I had that, but I had players willing to take the reins for a few sessions so I could recharge the batteries. Now I am looking forward to when I get back behind the screen as I have more time to plan.

You could always try something different and just have a fun GM on the fly session, like the players are battle droids or Artoo units, or you have a Paranoia style GM vs the players

We're just starting our RPG, luckily we have an experienced GM so I don't have to fake it. Eventually if he needs to hopefully one of the rest of us can take over for a bit.

Ideas are starting to float around in my head now. I have one that I'm really liking (can't mention because my players post here) and I know eventually I'll get one cool idea to add to it, and that'll just send me into a writing frenzy for like 12 hours straight and I get the first 5 or 6 adventures cranked out that way. That happened in my last campaign and what I wrote that first night lasted me almost 2 years.

Well, the party I'm currently running has a mercenary, an ex imperial commando, a wookie brawling beast, a smuggler, a brash pilot, and a con artist. Usually this is a fill-in game when someone needs a week off, or when 2 or more players are missing. This week and next, our con-artist (who works in Supplies and Acquisitions for the rebel alliance) is missing, so he provides gear and some leads, but everyone else has mediocre perception skills. Today I ran them through "kidnap the CompNOR SAGroup Youth from the boyscout jamborie" when all they have is a genetic profile from the uncle to use to identify him. The party knocked out the assigned group leader and took his place as replacement and other support staff. Then they had to listen to the camp commanadant's speach welcoming all the scouts to their 2-week wilderness survival training. From there, the 24 SS Hitler youth, um, CompNOR SAGroup, under their care were transported to the assigned territory. The wookie went scouting, and the ex commando went up to the oldest kid and told him to take 2 JR scouts & find the wookie, but not to engage. The kid grabbed two, got them into good formation (excellent command roll) but they weren't very good at sneaking. The wookie grabbed on kid, tucked him under his arm like a football, ran to the camp, and dropped him next to the firepit. (no spiking the ball!!! We don't want to kill them). This was repeated but the second group, where everyone botched perception, and wookie & scouts crashed into each other. Same end result. The 3rd kid got 5 jr scouts under him (instead of 2 as ordered), strapped cammoflage branches to their outfits to try to sneak up on the wookie, and started tracking. Unfortunately, while excellent trackers, they neglected stealth, and the wookie pounch and tackle resulted in more humiliation. The Merc put poison ivy next to the latrines and ordered everyone to take 2 steps to the left before entering the building. Thos who failed were itchy and punished for disobeying orders. Much other hazing went on. Finally they got to dinner time. One of the scouts asked about the imperial benediction. I expected the players to order one fo the scouts to do it. Instead, the ExCommando says "I recite it for them." Fine. I hand him the sheet of paper. Laughter ensues. Late at night they run into a "Snipe" hunt. Over the course of various "Training injuries", they collect DNA samples, run it through the computer, and finally found the right kid. Then that night they they order all the kids to bed and to stay there until dawn "No matter what they hear". They grapb the kid, go back to the camp ce3enter, steal the emergency medical evac shuttle and a bulk cargo freightor (loaded with the z-05 headhunters from the base), and take off. There is a momment's pause while the commando strafes the Commoandant's quarters from the ship's cannons. (Amazinglym, while the building is nearly destroyed, the commandant survived!).
The second mission was a warehouse battle. Only one player noticed the jedi master who appeared to warn them that over 40 stormtroopers were waiting inside, and he didn't say anything.
Some of the other players might get annoyed if/when they figure that one out.

The Imperial Benediction
Original:
Our Lord Vader
Who serveth the Emperor
Feared be thy name
Thy killing done
Thy praises sung
In the core as in
the outer rim
Grant us this day our daily dread
and forgive us our failures
as we try to kill those who have the emperor betrayed
and lead us into tempation of your will
so that thee need not us kill
and deliverus into the twighlight
again.

Revised:
Our Lord Vader
Who serveth the Emperor
Feared be thy name
Thy will be done
By Kiling some
that the others might be properly Motivated.
Give us this day our daily dread
As you slay those who would lead us into treason
And deliver the Galaxy to the New Order
--Tarkin

Okay, I have a question: what's the best way to tell a new GM that he is railroading and how to avoid it?

Well, for starters, don't make choo-choo train noises. GMs hate that. wink
A chat before or after the game can work well.
thing is, a lot of GMs put hours into prepping an adventure. There's a lot of effort involved. They don't want the time to have been for nothing. The trick is to be able to improvise, to have flexibility enough that the players can muck about, and maybe the prepped adventure get's shelved for a couple sessions. Maybe have a couple of side-treks or diversions. If nothing else, direct the GM to this board. There's usually someone here who has ideas or suggestions. whistling
