the best thing you can do is buy the core rulebook, it teaches you the basic game and gets you on your way. there are two versions of the star wars rpg, the wizards of the coast version, which is the most recent version and uses the same system as dungeons and dragons (also made by wizards of the coast) and the original version from west end games.
I personally found the west end games version easier to learn, but i'll give you websites for both so you can get on your way.
The west end games stuff is out of production now, ebay is your best bet for books if you want to play at home, otherwise there is an online rpg group at http://www.starwarsclub.org
and for the wizards of the coast version the best thing is to buy the core rule book. On the wizards of the coast website , http://www.wizards.com , there is or was a quick demonstration of the basic game mechanics involving padme and anakin on geonosis.

Definatly go West End if you can.You'll have to invent you own versions of the new stuff,but the feel of the game is much better.
