So I was going to start off this weeks game with a bang - a HUGE fleet conflict, with fighters and explosions and drama and the whole nine yards. Of course instead of rolling out the whole thing round by round, I'm going to go with little scenes of cool battle things. What follows is a short list of brainstorming that I did, but I wanted to throw it out to you guys and see if you had a moment of brilliance.

* Chase an enemy fighter through the wreckage of a capital ship
* Dogfight against a hotshot enemy ace.
* Buzz droids on the hull of a escort transport ship, cutting their way through.
* Close ion burst locks the controls of the characters ship for a few seconds - while pointed STRAIGHT at an enemy capital ship.
* Enemy fighters in a swarm of friendly drop ships - pinpoint precision fire needed to shoot it down.
* Obstacle in the way - mini debris field and the like. Hard turn to avoid or take damage
* Kamikaze run against the friendly flag ship, with a second wave incoming. Lots of targets to take out.
* Enemy reinforcements drop out of Hyperspace RIGHT on top of the players.

The fight is between the Republic, who is evacuating refugees from a world, and the CIS who are being big old meanies and invading the system. So, we can have ships that need escorting, civilians that that people need to shield from enemy fire, and a huge enemy fleet that they have to stall long enough to get everyone out of the system.

So go nuts - lets hear some "Hey! Do this!" moments

Cool. I like unexpected things in battles, it gives it a more edge of your seat feel

* A random comet/asteroid/whatever storm comes careening through the battle
* Innocent, uninvolved free traders mistakenly hyperspace into the middle of things
* Someone's ship is boarded and changes sides
* Friendlies that have ejected need to be rescued before they are vaped
* Enemy capital ship breaks apart with their warheads armed, making an instant mine field

There's also the:

- Third, unidentified fleet shows up and starts blasting both sides, leading the other two previously enemy groups to attack each other, attack the new enemy, retreat, regroup, do whatever...

Here are a couple of my favorites: devil

- Explosive decompression on a capital ship with unprotected crew in the hallways (stormtroopers & clonetroopers are effectively in vacsuits, but can be sucked out where their life support will run out in a few rounds, and Given are, of course, immune alien_2 ) Especially fun for the bridge crew!

- Enemy fighter has perfect lock up on PC's ship, but is too focussed to realize that another fighter has locked him up until too late. (Hurah for the Wing-man system)

- Meanwhile, down on the planet, young farmboys are watching the battle through macro-binoculars, dreaming that they too, might one day know the excitement of participating in a real, live space battle that will decide the fate of the galaxy. They hop into their speeders to go tell their friends all about it, only to be laughed at for having their heads in the clouds...

- A galactic media ship shows up to report the exciting news to the Galaxy, because inquiring sentients want to know. Somehow, they get caught in the crossfire. After all, droids don't know the difference...

- Everyone thought the ship was launching escape pods. No one knew that they were all bombs programmed to target the nearest enemy ship.

- AT-ATs and AT-STs can walk on the hulls of Star Destroyers just fine...
- follow up to previous: if the ISD goes to lightspeed, said ATs are swept from the hull by the massive accelleration and left adrift in space... Being loyal, they still fire at the enemy.

- Years later, after the massive battle, a young pilot accidentally stumbles across a piece of a vehicle overlooked by the Squib and Ugor salvagers. Looks like part of an Aerosprite--trashed beyond recognition or salvage in and of itself--with some sentient remains. No way of IDing the body, except for the curious object hanging from its belt--a cylindrical shape 25cm long and 2cm in diameter. (great for classic-era characters who don't start with lightsabers but really want one)

- The grunts are on a ship that gets blown to pieces, but rescued by a medical ship... Which then gets blown to pieces itself. doh!

- Piece of debris strikes canopy/cockpit, cracking it. (no serious damage, but should scare the PC for a couple seconds) shock

- Rescue ship picks up a non-standard life pod & finds out it's carrying someone's pet. Also has pet's ID, owner's personal commlink frequency, and next of kin. future adventure hook: return the pet to new owner/family member. Always fun in previous owner was evil IMP officer type. Note: said owner isn't necessarily dead, and if alive, will want his pet back. May even offer a reward. pig

- Enemy holdouts found after battle obviously lost. Out of ammo, no re-enforcements, over-whelming odds, they use suicide pills or overdose on pain-killers from medpacks to avoid capture & interrogation.

- Pirates, not waiting for the battle to finish, try to "salvage" a few smaller ships before they are abandoned or destroyed. Looting & hijacking--Oh my! skull

- Astromech ejects from fighter and is left drifting in the middle of the battle. PCs astromech takes a hit & is destroyed. Eject the corpse and pick up a new droid, or fight on out of loyalty to your tripod companion? Afterall, it might be repairable... If you survive all by yourself.
- Added fun: the astromech formerly worked for the other side.

- Given Jedi with lightsaber--just because his ship is destroyed & she had to eject doesn't mean she's out of this fight...

There's my two centi-credits for now.

As a note, I believe the realspace bubble kept within the hyperspace bubble would contain the same relativistic speed so the things on the hull should not be swept away. tongue

I refer to the Radio play by Brian Daley.
as a pretext for entering the Raltier system while it is under imperial quarentine, R2 is sent out onto the hull of the Tantavie IV to make repairs to the navigation antenna. 3PO warns him that if he doesn't hurry, he'll be swept off the hull when the ship makes the jump to lightspeed. nerd

Silly me... silly
I forgot the most important thing: Don't get killed.

"You know what I saw when I was busting us out of that station? Aside from all the cannons and that giant planet-buster? Fighterbays, Luke. Lots of them. And do you know what the average life expectancy of a green pilot in combat is?"
"I know it will be dangerous--"
"A minute or so."

Han & Luke, Star Wars Radio Programme script by Brian Daley, episode 12

Don't forget all the green pilots getting blown to smithereens. That's what they're for. Some writer later on will cobble together an enormous backstory for the character who had less than 2 seconds of screen time and put it in a "Tales from the ___ battlescene" anthology. wink

Here's another set of ideas:
--Place bets
--keep score with/against your best friend/rival (N)PC
--wag wings after every successful kill
--whoop & holler every time a capital ship blows up
--scare the bailed-out pilots with the thread of strafing them
--strafe the ejected pilots (if you're a meanee--just remember that means the enemy can do it to your side too)

or for the other kind of "dogfight":

--"Just like a rodian to bring a dog to a LION fight..."
--bring in a droid disguised as an organic
--Bet of the mutt on steroids
--kill the scumbags who pay to watch pre-sentient animals fight each other
--torture & kill the organizers of the "event"
--trank the dogs so they can be taken away for treatment & rehabilitation

Yeah, that was just the stuff! Perfect.

Of course when I actually ran the battle, I only could fit in one or two events. All the players were rusty as heck at large scale combat (it's been a while since we played) - but we all had fun, which is the important thing. I loved the reaction when the enemy reinforcements dropped in *RIGHT* above their small dogfight. I didnt do any damage to them - just wanting to scare the pants off them - but they jumped out of their skin when I did that.

Of course this week, it's a big ground battle - but thats a subject for another thread. happy

Good.
Save the rest for the next dog-fight.
peace

Trust me, even if you haven't planned for it, there WILL be a 'next dogfight'.

Funny stuff...Here are some of the stuff I do to anger enemy ships:

1.Go fast so they can't catch up. shock

2.Spin in circles so they can't shoot you. shame_on_you

3.Give up, and fly toward the nearest space station and land. laugh
