The setting isn't a radical departure from established continuity, just me being nerd enough to say "this is how I think things should've gone," especially in light of what we (and everyone in-universe) now knows post-PT, plus screwing with things a little bit to make things more interesting for the players tongue

Interested players please PM me. I'll also be glad to give anyone who lacks a copy of the rulebook a quick primer on Saga Edition, although my primer assumes some familiarity with the d20 system either by way of D&D 3.0, 3.5, or d20 Modern.

The State of the Galaxy

It has been 5 years since the destruction of the Emperor and Darth Vader aboard the 2nd Death Star, and the galaxy is still in a state of recovery. The most effective way to look at the state of the galaxy is by considering it’s various factions.

The Rebel Alliance: In the aftermath of the Emperor’s death at Endor, the Alliance to Restore the Republic became known as the Alliance of Free Planets. One month after the battle, Mon Mothma formally issued the “Declaration of a New Republic” on public HoloNet channels. Alternately referred to (depending on who you ask) as the Alliance, the New Republic, or the Rebellion, they initially headquartered at Endor, but later relocated to Mon Calamari.

The Declaration was signed by Mon Mothma, Borsk Fey’lya, and Admiral Ackbar, as well as officials from Duro, Kashyyyk, Sullust, and Elom. Under the New Republic’s first charter, these individuals comprised the Alliance Provisional Council, and Mon Mothma was elected Chief Councilor.

Militarily weak in the aftermath of Endor & the Emperor Reborn Crisis, the Alliance has been re-building & improving their military might. They’ve also been utilizing diplomatic initiatives, and simply allowing the Empire to tear itself apart. They have not been without military victories however, most notably Admiral Ackbar’s victory over Grand Admiral Syn at Kashyyk.

The Empire: The Empire is in a steady decline following the deaths of Palpatine, Lord Vader, and Grand Admirals Declann & Teshik at Endor. Beginning with Admiral Harssk abandoning the fleet during the battle, there are several “mini-Empires” as much at war with each other as with the New Republic. The rulers of such fiefdoms are referred to collectively as “warlords.” Other notable warlords include Moff Thorne, “High Admiral” Teradoc, “Superior General” Delvardus, and Admirals Zsinj & Drommel. Grand Admiral Zaarin was reported killed shortly after the Battle of Hoth in a failed coup, but sketchy intelligence has recently placed him in the Outer Rim territories experimenting with Clone War-era battle droid technology.

The greatest of the “mini-Empires” is a cabal of military officials, espionage experts, corporate conglomerates and Force-users known as the Pentastar Alignment, led by Grand Moff Ardus Kaine. Also throwing in their lot with Grand Moff Kaine are Grand Admiral Grant, Grand Inquisitor Tremayne, and by proxy the vast majority of the Imperial Inquisitors.

In addition to various Imperial officials claiming territories for their own, some, like Moff Tavira and the Star Destroyer Invidious, simply resorted to piracy. Others strengthened ties to the criminal element, ties kept hidden for fear of the Emperor’s wrath.

The most powerful single faction is the Empire “proper,” which is to say that part of the Empire which still obeys commands out of Imperial Center. In the aftermath of the Emperor Reborn Crisis, Imperial forces have been slowly falling back and consolidating power in the Core Worlds & Coruscant. The recognized ruler of the Empire is Ysanne “Iceheart” Isard, former Head of Intelligence. Elected by the Council of Moffs (referred to derisively by the New Republic as the “Mofference”) as Steward of the Empire after a series of bitter internecine quarrels and eliminating her chief rival, Grand Vizier Sate Pestage, the election to Steward is seen as a stopgap measure until a “true Emperor” can be crowned. As Steward, Isard commands Grand Admirals Makati, Takel, and Tigellinus. It’s rumored that her success is owed to backing by a cabal of Force mages known as the Prophets of the Dark Side.

Without the fear of an organized Empire, replete with massive fleets and the Death Star, many old rivalries between planets & species threaten to once again explode into open conflict.

Some long for an idealized version of the Empire, the Empire that Palpatine promised the galaxy. Such folk look to individuals such as Baron Soontir Fel as examples of decisive but honorable leadership.

The Criminal Element: With the deaths of Prince Xizor and Jabba the Hutt, “organized” crime is anything but. Several Imperial officers –even a few Moffs- have turned pirate. The galaxy did suffer a resurgence in organized crime briefly, due to the activities of Tyber Zann and the Zann Consortium, but their leader has suddenly disappeared. It is unclear whether or not this was due to rival gangsters, Imperial or Alliance action, or just simply wanting to lay low for awhile.

On the other hand, the ease with which Luke Skywalker was able to dismantle the leadership of Black Sun and the Hutt crime syndicate have shaken some crime lords to their very core, frightening them into “going legit.” In the aftermath, other crime lords such as Durga the Hutt, Talon Karrde, Clezo, and Snuvo Sneer wait in the wings to pick up the pieces. Likewise, the remnants of the Black Sun syndicate are re-organizing under the name Black Nebula. Combined with the decline of the Empire, and the slow but steady consolidation of the New Republic, the result is rampant crime & piracy throughout much of the galaxy. Some sentients actually miss the oppression of the Empire, when “at least the shuttles ran on time.”

The Jedi Order: The Jedi are once again flourishing –albeit slowly- under the leadership of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. However, they must contend with a galaxy that distrusts or even hates them, thanks to decades of Old Republic and Imperial propaganda. Still, the Jedi press on with their mission to bring about peace & justice in the galaxy.

Owing to the lessons of the Clone Wars, while no individual Jedi is prohibited from serving however they see fit, the Jedi Order is longer are beholden to any single governmental body. However, many Jedi have come from the ranks of the Rebel Alliance, most famously Jedi Masters Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa-Solo. Jedi Knight Corran Horn is still an active member of the New Republic’s famous Rogue Squadron, and Master Organa-Solo is the liaison between the Jedi Order and the Alliance of Free Planets, as the Alliance has made several overtures to the Order.

In the now-famous address to the Alliance Provisional Council, Master Skywalker is noted as having said “If this New Republic were to ever go once more down the path of Palpatine, the Jedi Order will stand ready to oppose it. If the Empire were to put aside the ways of oppression, fear-mongering, and tyranny, the Jedi Order stands ready to assist them in pursuing justice and peace.”

The Jedi have also formed a High Council, consisting largely of the most experienced Jedi, those first students of Masters Skywalker and Organa-Solo. In form, the Council resembles that of the time prior to the rise of the Empire. However in function, it more resembles the Jedi Convocations of the Old Republic. The Council acts an advisory body, not a ruling one for the Jedi Order. In addition, Grand Master Skywalker has instituted the policy of having a Padawan sit on the Council. He sites the wisdom of “the beginner’s mind” that has less to unlearn. It is also speculated by the Jedi that Skywalker also took this step in order to combat the complacency & arrogance that doomed the Jedi of the Old Republic.

The Jedi have abandoned the practice of training members from birth, insisting that the role of a Jedi is one that must be chosen, rather than indoctrinated. They’ve also taken steps to ensure that Initiates retain contact with family & friends, and have enlisted the aid of organizations like CorSec to teach Jedi how to properly balance duty & family.

The Jedi have also formed alliances with other Force-using traditions. Master Skywalker & Jedi Horn were able to bring most of the Jensaarai back under the banner of the Jedi Order; and Master Organa-Solo has made contact with the Witches of Dathomir, the descendants of an exiled Jedi Knight. Additionally, groups such as the Baran-Do Sages and the Aing-Tii Monks have demonstrated a willingness to exchange knowledge with the Jedi.

The Sith: Though the last of the Dark Lords of the Sith, Darth Vader and Darth Sidious (as the Emperor was secretly known) were destroyed at Endor, Masters Skywalker & Organa-Solo constantly remind the Jedi that the Sith have been thought “forever defeated” on many prior occasions throughout the millennia. Even though they held to the “Rule of Two,” Master Skywalker cautions that the Sith Lords had many candidates waiting in the wings in their schemes to destroy one another. Perhaps a few such Dark Jedi even received some minor instruction in the ways of the Sith, enough of the dark arts to make them formidable foes. Even without such tutelage, Master Skywalker has stated on many occasions, the process by which the first Sith Lord came into being can always be re-created: “So long as there are living beings to create the Force, there will always be fear, anger, and hate to add to the Force’s dark side. So long as there is a dark side of the Force, there is always the possibility of the Sith.”

True to their warnings, there have been some resurgences of the Sith. The first and most dire revolved around the actions of a clone calling himself “the Emperor Reborn.” Whether the result of Lord Sidious’ own experiments, or the desperate actions of Imperial loyalists, a clone of Palpatine was created that wrought havoc on the galaxy two years after the death of the Emperor at Endor. It was a dark year for the galaxy, and even Master Skywalker is reluctant to speak of his experiences while captured by the demented clone, except to say that Princess Leia proved herself “the very model of what a Jedi should be” in saving her Master from the Sith.

The second was the discovery of the tomb of Exar Kun on Yavin IV. The Dark Lord had learned some means by which to anchor some vestiges of his consciousness to his tombs, and was able to linger some 4,000 years until awakened by the activities of the Jedi Praxeum that had just been established. The Sith spirit led to the downfall & destruction of one of the Praxeum students before being vanquished. The Jedi Knights remain vigilant, both against remnants of the Sith Lord’s evil experiments, and against treasure-seekers looking for dark artifacts.

Intelligence reports and premonitions by the Jedi have revealed another darksider with strong ties to the Sith: Shira Elan Colla Brie, an elite agent referred to as “the Emperor’s Hand.” (the other known Emperors Hands are Arden Lyn, Roganda Ismaren, “Blackhole,” Jeng Droga, and Marek Stele) In the aftermath of the Battle of Hoth, Brie infiltrated Rogue Squadron in an attempt to either discredit or assassinate Luke Skywalker. Guided by the Force, Skywalker shot down Brie during an assassination attempt while on a mission. Rescued by Darth Vader, Brie was rehabilitated and received some tutelage from the Dark Lord. Now calling herself Dark Lady Lumiya, she has attempted to revive the Sith ways, even going as far as training an apprentice in the tradition of the Sith “Rule of Two.” That apprentice, calling himself the Dark Lord of Belderone, turned away from the dark side during a confrontation with Master Skywalker, and is currently undergoing rehabilitation in a hidden New Republic safe house. Intelligence reports also indicate that Lumiya is allied with Imperial Steward Isard. As such, she presumably has access to the Emperor’s storehouses and the Jedi Temple at Coruscant. Therefore, the extent of her power is unclear.

Also troubling to the Jedi are various cults that revere the Sith, such as the Sons of Ragnos, the Church of the Dark Side, the Sidians, the Prophets of the Dark Side, and the Krath.

There are also rumors surrounding Set Harth. The subject of whispered legends, Harth was a Dark Jedi in the days prior to the fall of the Sith “Brotherhood of Darkness” a thousand years ago. Throughout the centuries, there have been “Set Harth sightings,” though it is unclear whether or not they are the same person, or different individuals using the same name, much like the Dread Pirate Ro Buurtz.

The Mandalorians: Much like the Jedi, the Mandalorians have come back from the brink of extinction. There are actually three factions of Mandalorians, but non- Mando have trouble distinguishing the differences between them. They are all fierce warriors however, able to even challenge Jedi Knights. The means by which to draw them into battle, and their motivations for doing so, remain a mystery.

First are the Mandalorian Protectors, who liberated the planet Mandalore from Grand Admiral Takel. The leader of the Protectors, Fenn Shysa, is recognized as the Mandalore, or leader of the Mandalorians. Given that there are other factions of Mandalorians, it is unclear how much authority the Mand’alor (in their native tongue) holds. Next are the Mandalorian Supercommandoes, led by Boba Fett. Finally, the most recognizable are the Mandalorian Death Watch, notable by their spiked accents to the already distinctive Mandalorian armor. Their leadership has yet to be discovered.

Other Threats: Besides those listed, there are countless other threats to galactic peace. Corruption flourished under the Old Republic, only to be replaced by fear of the Empire. Without that fear, the old vices have become more open once again. Moreover, there have been new sightings of a heretofore unknown alien species, noted for their sharp features, stark white skin & dark hair, and love of solid-matter blades.

Skirmishes along the borders of Imperial space, skirmishes the Republic lose decisively & consistently, hint that the Empire may be preparing for a new offensive.

Sounds interesting. What are the game mechanics involved; as in starting levels, Jedi PCs?

And... I don't have the Saga Edition rulebook, would it be possible to have someone create a character for me?

STAR WARS - THE HIDDEN THREAT

Hope has been restored to the galaxy. The Jedi Knights, guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy, have risen from the ashes under the leadership of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.

Without the leadership of the vile Darth Sidious, the Empire is slowly crumbling, while the GALACTIC REPUBLIC once again works to bring democracy and freedom to the galaxy.

Even so, there are those who long for a return to the tyranny of the Empire...

PAN DOWN starfield, to a battle in progress between the Imperial Mark-II Star Destroyer Adamant, and a Republic taskforce consisting of the Corellian corvettes Valiant and Vigilant, and the frigate Intrepid. Each commander is deploying their forces to considerable effect. The corvettes and A-Wings keep the Imperial fighters & bombers at bay, while X-Wing & B-Wing fighters, along with the Intrepid's turbolasers, devastate the Imperial warship. Meanwhile, the Adamant, with her larger guns, launch barrage after whithering barrage of cannon fire on the Republic craft.

Soon enough, the Vigilant succumbs to the Star Destroyer's fusillade, blossoming into a ball of fiery gasses. Without the support of the corvette's laser cannons, TIE fighters & bombers begin to overwhelm the Republic capital ships & interceptors with sheer numbers. Even so, the Republic craft succeed in launching another fierce volley upon the Adamant.

Captain Dinesh picked himself up from the floor of the Intrepid's bridge just in time to see another salvo from the Star Destroyer send the Valiant to join the Vigilant in fiery oblivion.

DINESH: Damage report!

LT. OONAN: Shields are down, our landing bay is venting into space, long range sensors & communications are down, and...that last TIE bomber run took out our hyperdrive. Orders, sir?

The Zabrak captain and his Twi'lek first officer lock eyes for a long moment. The pause is broken as the ship is rocked by another explosion.

DINESH: Re-route all remaining power to the engines & forward batteries. Target the Star Destroyer's main reactor and prepare for ramming speed. That should draw the attention of those TIE fighters. Signal all of our surviving fighters to break off and make the jump to hyperspace. They'll need to broadcast what happened here, assuming they get clear of this mess! Give the order for all non-essential personnel to abandon ship!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OOC: Koohii, in case you handn't guessed, Lahsur is part of the security personnel aboard the Intrepid. Jello, I'll get to Fons and the Adamant shortly.

Lahsur waits for his own clearance to board an escape pod while directing others to the nearest available and making sure pods don't leave before they are fully occupied. "I feel like a ride operator and a pleasure park, only terrified." He gulps and shoves an engineer to the next seat.
"Wonder what the droids are supposed to do? Wait for the ship to blow up?"
