One of the fathers of Tabletop RPGs has passed away. Play a good game in memory.

Strange how one small thing can determine the fate of so many... especially if it's a twenty-sided die

GenCon Indy this year is doing several events in honor of Gary.

On Saturday, August 16th at 12:00 pm EST, there will be a moment of silence.

An open event called the "Tower of Gygax" using the AD&D system will be run during the convention. I know I'll be playing it if I have time.

GenCon.com posted:
In the far reaches of the world, hidden on hostile peak, the sinister TOWER OF GYGAX rises towards the heavens. Once home to the greatest wizard of all time, the tower is filled with terrible traps, strange and ferocious monsters, and rich and magical treasures. Today a new generation of heroes has found the tower and dreams of the wonders within – but will any of them survive?

The "Grand Gygaxian Dice Collection" will be outside the main entrance. Convention-goers can toss in a die or two for Gary, and the entire collection will be auctioned off at the GenCon charity auction on Saturday. I'm tossing in a d10 for V:tM (the first tabletop rpg I ever played), and a d20 for the various d20 games I've enjoyed. Maybe I'll throw in a die for all of you at TFN too.

A Memorial Book will be assembled, including the contributed character sheets, stories, etc of convention-goers. This book will also be sold at the charity auction. I plan on putting in a V:tM sheet, a D&D 3.5 sheet of my favorite character build (the Untouchable Monk), and perhaps a short essay on what gaming has meant to me in my life.

Farewell Gary, you will be missed.

I can say without utmost seriousness that it makes me wish I was going to GenCon just to participate in that sort of tribute. Gary deserves nothing less.
