The nostalgic losers will say the 16- or 8-bit era
, but I'm going with right now. However, the 16-bit era is a close second.

I'll go with right now, with the 16-bit era extremely close behind it.

All I have to say is that the PSX/N64/DC era was a bit dissapointing after the fantastic 16 bit time. And especially since classic games are getting ported to the GBA.

I'd have to say the 8-bit era (though 16-bit is a close second due to the quality of tthe games), if only because it was the last time almost everyone had the same system (except for that one kid everyone seemed to know who had a Master System) and so everyone was talking and playing the same games as everyone else while at the same time everyone had at least one or twop games you'd never even heard of that turned out to be real fun. It made for a much more satisfying gaming expierence since there was a greater level of personal and "community" interaction.
Though, obviously it's a golden age long past and one that shall never return, since things are dilluted amongst multiple platforms today.
Though it's rather nice how the higher level of technology has allowed for more cinematic gaming expierences, so in a way, the 8-bit era forged the modern mythologies of today, and today gamemakers are free to tell the stories within those mythologies.

The 4-Bit era of Atari 2600, Intellivision and Coleco. You youngsters don't know how good you've got it but these newer games lack spirit... why, back in my day you had to look it up in the instruction manual to understand that the yellow rectangle at the center of your screen was Indiana Jones

I'm tempted to say 8-bit and before, just because that's when I was young and most in awe of video games. But after playing The Wind Waker, there's no question that the best era is right now.

I think it depends on what's important to you. If you want creative story lines replayability, the 16 bit era and before were master. If you want good graphics with a bunch of the same old thing coming out over and over again with newer and better graphics, then now is the best. IMO.
I think I lean toward the 16 bit era and before because there were some REALLY good games made back then.
The only thing that makes me want to vote for now is BF1942 and other revolutionary games.

8 bit...Nintendo was the greatest videogame system ever made. Classic games, tight controller and just simplicity.
I guess I'm being nostalgic since I've been playing videogames for almost sixteen years now.
