RE: Which gaming era was best?
>> The depth of modern games, along with the grapgical and sound capabilities of computers and consoles nowadays, mean that Today beats the past second to none.

The best graphics power: today.
The best games: Not today.
My 2 cents.

Some of the most awsome graphics today: StarFox Adventures
On of the worst games today: StarFox Adventures
Beauty is on the inside. Don't be shallow.

It's got to be 8 bit and before, the days of playing all 4 games of Alex Kidd straight through without a break during school holidays were the best in my life.

So StarFox Adventures gameplay isn't good? I've only heard good things about it - Zelda-ish gameplay and so on.

RE: Which gaming era was best?
I voted for the 16-bit era. Some of the finest games ever were produced when the great SNES vs Genesis war was going on. It was a war of console loyalty, but it was nowhere as ignorant as today's blatant fanboyism towards one system or another.
Better graphics and sound do not make a game great by default, afterall.
I totally agree.

RE: Which gaming era was best?
The problems with SFA were:
A) Rare makes you collect so much pointless stuff. Maybe it's just me, but I pretty sick of collecting pointless stuff. It also doesn't help that they put in a really anoying fanfare for every item you collect. The fanfare even plays for the health power ups at the begining. I swear I'll kill some one if I have to get another Bafmodad (Yes, I know Bafmodads are extra lives. I just think it's a pretty stupid name. ... Bafmodad. 'diculous.)
B) As for the Zelda-like gameplay, it ends up doing the game a disservice. No matter how similar to Zelda it may seem, you're constantly reminded of the fact it's not Zelda. The was one point where my friend was on this platform up high. If it was Zelda, he would've been able to jump off the platform and land near the entrance of the room; and there by eliminating the need to take a ridiculously long route. But instead, Rare actively programmed it so Fox can't jump off of that side of the platform. He just grabs the egde no matter how fast you try to run off the platform.
So SFA is one of the worst games in recent history in my mind, but it also has some of the best graphics ever. I am still marveled by how good the graphics are. I'm not going to play it again.
