Well, it seems this this might be more worthwhile than I originally thought.

>>> I don't think this is a bad thing at all. Since Ep 1's release, LA has been flooding us with a bunch of crappy games. Gladius?<<<

Huh? Gladius was a solid game and was far from being crappy. It was a sleeper hit for 2003. But you had to appreciate games like FFT in order to enjoy it, I guess. That game and Armed and Dangerous were the first Lucas Arts console games that I didn't laugh at in quite some time. Prior to that they were always a joke in the console world. With the exception to Zombies Ate My Neighborhood, that game rocked. grin

People are complaining about this? The LucasArts we knew and loved was a smaller group of taltented developers who worked on a couple quality products at a time, not ten cookie-cutter SW titles at a time. Getting rid of the unnecessary garbage and the crappy titles is what they should've done five years ago.

Yeah, it sucks at first glance that a few in-house titles were cancelled, but it's probably for the better. I mean, aren't you glad KOTOR3 isn't being developed by these guys? They're reportedly keeping 40 people, which is more than enough to make a couple good games at a time. They just need to make the right ones and keep publishing companies that know what they're doing.

I've gone through the thread but I still can't work it out. Why were those people laid off . . . there has to be a reason, reasonable or not.

My utilisation of complex locution to ask what's more pathetic, fans who worship their
movie actors, or the actors who couldn't give a damn, is more a reflection of my own
superincumbent mental actuity than any circumscribed lexicon. Don't you agree?

Some interesting comments made by the above. I agree that, while it may seem like a downer for the company, it may be the move that is required. By reducing the amount of projects they have to work on, they can put a greater level of work into the more important products. Of course, a majority of their products our now 3rd party run (i.e. Bioware, Raven, etc.) so we won't see a sudden reduction in the amount of titles released by the company.

There have been some major changes in the industry all-around these past few years. And while most of them are sudden, many have been fairly well recieved. We should all remember when Sega moved out of the hardware industry into multi-platform software, for example. I'm not suggesting LucasArts become a publishing company and remove the internal development team, but these days it's all about money, and keeping things afloat. To do that, changes have to be made to keep up with the constantly changing world.

If anything, I think LucasArts have learnt plenty in the last few years. They have attempted to bring more titles to the market during the Episode I era to keep fans entertained, but it is obvious to all that it is better to release a small handful of quality titles (aka Rareware or Bioware) then constantly releasing titles simply for profit (some of THQ's GBA titles come to mind, no offense to the company)

"Dear LucasArts,

Gee, maybe if you took the new Sam & Max to market, you could have been making money and would not have had to can 31 people"

"Dear Writer,

We would like to relese that game but it seems that no but you is interested in it. If we were to relese it, it would be one of the worst selling games in the history of capitalism. We can not handle bankruptcey at this time."

If they don't say that, then they truly have lost it.

"As much as I loved the Star Wars games since the 90s (X-Wing being my favorite) The non-SW games were always excellent, especially the text-adventure stuff like Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, and Full Throttle. Living somewhere "on the way to Sturgis" I still keep hoping to see a Corley...."

I should say something but I don't want to be banned.

I suprised they surrived for this long when they made those terrible point and click games back in the 90's. X-wing had something to do with that, I guess.

LA's success of the early to mid 90's was because of a mixture of star wars and NON-SW titles.

Ever since Episode 1, they have churned out game after game based on SW. A few good, most have been mediocre at best.

What we need is something that is truly revolutionary and different. For example: Jedi Outcast basically Quake 3 with lightsabers. Starwars Battlegrounds is basically BF 1942 with stormtrooopers. Cut the crap and make something different!

LA had a lot of good non-star wars games.

Games like Loom and Full Throttle. I always wanted to see a remake of Loom and a sequel for Full Throttle.

Wait a second, what about KotOR, Galaxies, and like? These titles were rather successful and they came out in the last few years -- how can LucasArts not benefit from these titles (hell, one of the titles is an mmorpg)? Bioware and Blizzard unleash one title every few years and yet they survive.

If LucasArts is really in big trouble, it can only be explained by poor poor investments of profits and mismanagement of resources.

We'll see...

EDIT: I checked LucasArts' profile at Hoovers and I couldn't find any news headline warning of possible layoffs.
