Well, with Microsoft being so pissed at BioWare that they're screwing up their sales with the LCE, I can't see them doing a port to PC any time soon.

An acquaintance has played through Mass Effect, and tells me that his final playtime is around 46 hours. This may seem like a lot, but he's absolutely anal about "100%"-ing things (his Twilight Princess time was almost double mine).

He does say that most of the optional stuff is directly integrated into the main gameplay, though, with most of the sidequests given to you through the course of play, and that you actively have to ignore them if you just want to rush through the main story (which he guesstimated amounted to about 17 hours of game time). Knights of the Old Republic clocked in at around 45-50 hours with most sidequests included, so this is about par.

I'm in favor of the sex cutscenes, just because they push an envelope that needs to be pushed. I just want games to be treated similar to movies: if you're making a mature game, and want some sexual content in it, fine. If not, fine. If God of War and Mass Effect get us a bit closer to that state, I can handle their first stab at the actual implementation being a little clumsy.

Because honestly, whose wasn't?

That is something I actually hope doesn't happen. I really don't want my games to turn into the same thing as R rated movies. By nature they are going to be more violent than movies, but why would I want pixelized sexual content in my videogame? If you seperate them, people like me who have a high tolerance for violence but less for other things can get what they want, and if you want more sexually explicit stuff, we have teh interwebs.

Well, there hasn't yet been a video game where I think to myself "That needs more sex." But if the situation calls for it, I see no reason why sexuality can't be incorporated into a video game similar to a movie.

I think too often people confuse explict sexual conduct with romance. I don't want my games to turn into the game equivalent of chick-flicks or pornos.

On the other hand, I'd forward that movement toward a greater variety would be inherently healthy for the medium. While it would of course not be optimal for every game to be a "chick flick" game, having some that are has to be a positive thing, I'd tend to think.

Every other entertainment medium/art form has its erotica and its pornography; that doesn't mean that they dominate the medium. Despite the preponderance of pornographic movies, most mainstream movies incorporate sex in ways that aren't taking their cues from porn. We're beginning to see pornographic games. Just a few, and they're just starting, but that's something that's beginning to exist. That will be its own niche. Games, particularly deeply plotted games like RPGs, can certainly expand to encompass sexuality into the array of things they deal with without veering in that direction. I'd consider it unusual, and probably undesirable, if games didn't develop to be able to deal in a mature and sophisticated manner with sexuality.

Yes, I believe. Character customization is exceptionally detailed in this game. There are videos demonstrating this feature.

Gamespy.com gave Mass Effect a glowing review.

Slashdot review

Gamers hoping for crystalline purity will be disappointed by, among other things, graphical pops, lengthy load times, and some occasionally stupid AI. It doesn't matter. Warts and all, this voyage to the edge of the galaxy and back is some of the best storytelling I've ever experienced in a game. It's like living a movie, a good one, where you decide the ending in a deeply meaningful way. Read on for my impressions of humanity's first steps onto the galactic stage.

So there are problems but they are outweighed by a great game.

IGN review is up...a solid 9.4.

TeamXbox gave it a 9.6. Apparently, the general consensus is that, despite the variety of technical issues, the good outweighs the bad by a very large margin. Which is interesting, because in the video review at IGN, the guy goes out of his way to talk about how ****ty some of the bugs are for about two minutes out of a six-minute review. This game must really be great for all those things to be overlooked, and to still get that 9.4 score.

Also, Penny Arcade has been doing posts and strips on Mass Effect for the past week, and seem to concur with the other reviews -- it has some infuriating design decisions, but the overall experience is still incredible. Tycho there also finished the main quest in about 17 hours, the same as my friend.

Yea, I hadn't really looked at IGN prior to the lead up to this game, and I liked it much better than GS.
