Yeah, I was surprised by Gamespot's review.

I've played the game for a little over 2 hours and have found the texture pop-in and frame-rate losses to be barely noticeable. They seemed a little worse with the film grain and motion blur on, but I just turned those off anyway. So I would say I haven't seen one bit of evidence for any of the games criticisms thus far. Gears of War and Bioshock both had distracting amounts of texture pop-in from the get go, yet it was never even mentioned as a "technical flaw" in either game. I also found the combat smooth, and fairly cool. I like being able to bound from cover to cover and lay down suppressing fire even though there is no suppression mechanic. I didn't see any bad AI, and had no problems pausing the game to set up biotic use or anything else. I guess some flaws may become more distracting as the game rolls on, but I can't ever recall a game I've played where that was the case.

I really seems like game reviews are becoming more and more useless and seem to exist now only to fuel internet flame wars between 13 year olds.

Yeah, there's been much ado made over the game's suposedly "inferior" squad-based combat system, which is miles wide of the actual point. The story and the dialogue ARE the meat. That's the point. If you want squad-based tactical shooting, you don't turn to an RPG to get it. By the same token, I wouldn't buy a squad-based tactical shooter, and criticize its plot and its lame dialogue options. I just decry this idea that every game should also strive to be an action shooter.

The dialogue options pretty much are the game itself. If you're going into a BioWare RPG for a dynamic combat experience, you're setting yourself up for disappointment right out of the box. That's not what these games are about.

Received our copy of the Limited Collector's Edition just this afternoon, literally 30 minutes ago. Not that far in the game yet, still creating a character, but the ****ing production values on this game are astonishing. Felt like I was watching a movie, from what I've played so far. I love the little clip that was shown during the IGN video review of side-by-side branching conversations, and one of them ends up with Shepard gunning down the Krogan he was talking to.

I just told Ashley Williams that I survived my traumatic incident (I'm a Sole Survivor) not because of luck or any external force, but simply "because I refused to die." I'm such a badass. I think I'm going to go forward as a Soldier, unlock Assault Rifles, then begin again as a Vanguard with the Assault Rifle ability. I'm overthinking this, aren't I? I just want one biotic power, dammit!

I'm still thinking of going the Biotic/Hacker route, since I won't have to think about "Crap, I should really bring along a Hacker on this mission," or be utterly screwed if my Hacker guy bites it along the way. Just bring along a team of heavy-hittin' mutha****ers.

Thank God for the holiday weekend. Can't wait to dive into this even more.

Wow. So you're furiously disagreeing with a review of a game you've never played? raised_brow

First of all, you can't take stock in any individual game review website. So Gamespy gave Mass Effect a glowing review and Gamespot didn't? And I imagine that has nothing to do with the fact that the publishers pay Gamespy ad money, right? Every major game website has someone's hand in their pocket, and in nearly every case that plays an influence on the reviews. It's best to examine the critical consensus or focus on independent critics (I check GameRevolution and Penny Arcade) in order to get a clearer picture.

Also, Gamespot typically grades harder than other critics. Let's look at Metacritic's current top six new 360 titles: BioShock, Orange Box, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Mass Effect, and Virtua Fighter 5. Gamespot ranked five of these six titles lower than the critical consensus did. Gamespy gave all of these games 5/5 stars. Personally, I prefer Gamespot's method.

And as most critics have acknowledged, Mass Effect is imperfect. The guys at Penny Arcade ran a series on Mass Effect's flaws: they eventually conclude that "This is a series we could continue indefinitely, but I think its task is largely complete: to establish that there are sometimes serious concerns with the way the game goes about its business."

...and everyone is still gonna buy the game, play it, and enjoy it, and no one is gonna give a **** what Gamespot says.

I guess it was too much to hope that people had gotten more mature after the response to Gamespot giving Twilight Princess an 8.8 out of 10.

I just picked this up today, and it is awesome. The combat isn't the reason why you play a game like this, and even if it had no combat at all I would probably still play it. tongue

I read his review and agreed with his criticisms that it sometimes felt like a greatest hits collection and that the graphics sometimes lookef a tad dated, they just weren't as irritating to me. Honestly, the fans overreacted.

EDIT: Also, what Hammurabi said.

Mine arrived yesterday but my XBOX360 has not been returned by Microsoft following its repairs. I must remain patient I suppose.
