Can anyone tell me how the character creation decisions effect gameplay? I'm specifically interested in the tone of the game if you select the 'Ruthless' reputation. Does that pretty much determine you're a 'bad guy', or does it mainly affect NPCs' attitudes toward you?

I'm five hours in. I cannot get over just how ***damned deep this game goes. I mean, the Codex alone is incredible. Every time I get a new entry in that bastard, I just sit back and listen. Or read, if it's for the secondary part.

But those Thresher Maws, or whatever. Why did they make them so ****ing hard to kill??

Love the alien designs, especially the Quarians. And the level of the detail on the Salarian guy you meet up with in the Citadel about the Keepers. It's got to be the best game I've played in years. Sure, the fighting sucks from time to time, but the RPG aspects of it rock hard. Anyone else notice how prevalently the menu is pushing you towards downloadable content? BioWare must have a lot of DC up their sleeves. There are usually a bunch of good games this time of year, but this year has simply been loaded. The Xbox 360 in particular has had a very stellar year on the software side of things.

But other than a few minor complaints, this game has blown me away. The Citadel is absolutely enormous, and the game's dialogue was pulling me in right from the very start. The combat is actually better than I thought it would be, but I can see it getting old. Also, per the complaints I've read in reviews, there were a couple times when I was running around, and all of a sudden found myself in the middle of a fight and was dead in five seconds, so I've gotten in the habit of saving often. But love it so far.

That all said, I have yet been able to accumulate enough money to suit up my party with decent weapons and armor (**** is expensive), so right now I'm really getting my ass kicked. Anyone else having trouble getting money?

To a large extent, yes. You have your "disposition meter" there on the screen, and like in KotOR, the lion's share of the game's NPCs will be affected by your current alignment with regard to what conversational options become available to you. Also, in a broader storyline sense, how you behave tends to affect how the VIPs from other races regard you -- some will still hold you contempt no matter what you do; some will be wowed by evil deeds; and others will regard virtue as its own virtue.

There's no "right" or "wrong" way to play. Just some choices that will "get your **** pushed in, but you can open up crates real good," and others that will result in your "kicking alien ass and taking names."

Also, it's unfortunate that no matter how cool you make your character look, he still prances around like Little Lord Fauntleroy. Swishiest running ever? I vote yes.

I got my copy.... can't play it until Saturday at the earliest, but I was scared ****less waiting even this long would be too late to get a first shipment copy. They had the Collectors Edition, and I was tempted, but I looked at the back and I decided to pass. It looked all to be concept art and documentaries.... which are nice but not worth ever thinning money lately. Can not wait to play this one.... I see no doubt its my second most favorite game of the year.

Same for me as well. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm not doing enough to get credits or something, but I'm the poorest Spectre this side of the galaxy right now. You'd think Shepard gets a healthy salary for swearing to the defense of the galactic peace, but I digress...

You mostly get better equipment by killing things and looting chests.

Stores are expensive, yes...but if you don't buy much and sell as you can, you'll have a million soon enough.

So I have played this since yesterday, taking only small breaks to eat and sleep. The autosave feature sucks, and I always end up going pretty far in a difficult area only to die and forget that I didn't save. Then I forget about the last time I did it and do it again. I don't really understand how to look around while you pause the game with the bumpers, but as pure soldier running around shooting things only requires me to pay attention to biotics and techs in the hard spots. I love the exploration part, I only wish the planets could be more numerous and populated. I loved the space monkeys that I found, but some more vegitation other than green stuff on the ground would have been nice. The mission levels are just awesome, and I am always blown away by the story.

I just beat Mass Effect last night... it was AWESOME. I was really satisfied with how things tied up and the ending left it open for the sequel. I can't wait for Mass Effect 2.

I actually didn't expect to finish it so fast. I only clocked in 17 hours, but to be fair, I didn't really do any of the UNC assignments. I kept telling myself that I was gonna go back and take some time to complete all of them, but every time I finished up one mission, the next one opened up and provided more clues on the hunt for Saren. Before I knew it I had beaten the game.

The game honestly could have done without UNC assignments altogether. The few I completed felt like chores, and after my first encounter with a Thresher Maw, I just said "Hell naw, this sucks!" and put them off for too long.

I probably won't bother with them again even on my second play-through. I felt like I was really immersed in the story when I didn't have to go to some boring wasteland with one point of interest.

At any rate, I really enjoyed the game and I look forward to playing it a second time to see what I can change.

*Spoiler* Unfortunately, I lost Kaiden on Virmire to go save Ashley, and I'd like to see if some earlier dialogue could have saved them both. *Spoiler*

I'd also like to see what happens when I romance Liara instead of Ashley. I know that there are also multiple endings, but I've read that the cutscenes themselves don't really change that much... but that's okay. The ending was pretty satisfying for me, and it felt really cinematic, so I'm okay with just the one basic one. Sweet game!

Didn't have as much of a chance to play this yesterday as I would've preferred (went to Thanksgiving at our relatives in Glen Ellyn), but been hitting it as hard as a hot chick since I got back.

Newest hatred: insta-deaths.

I kept dying while fighting Matriarch Benezia, and I didn't know why. Once second I'd have full health, and then my character suddenly topples over dead. I assumed I was getting shot by some sort of Warphole attack or something. My bullets didn't seem to be damaging this blue-skinned bitch, and I ended up having to take out all of her guards first.

Who was the genius who thought that the one thing RPGs were really missing were one-hit instant kills? I'm not fighting some Final Fantasy Ultimate Weapon here. This is the first ****ing boss.

The teammate A.I. is certifiably insane. In one firefight, they both refused to exit from cover, cowering in fear from a single soldier carrying a pistol while screaming out things like "I can't get a shot!" In the very next battle, when a pair of machine-gun turrets popped up, they stood perfectly still while the turrets tore both of them to pieces. And that my squadmates are idiots who always manage to stand right in front of the object I'm trying to interact with -- hey, we have four minutes to deactivate all these charges, so could you NOT STAND IN FRONT OF THE ****ING THING?!?!?

That said, it's a major testament to BioWare's writing and production values that this game kicks as much unholy ass as it still does...I haven't experienced a story this epic and compelling since Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica, and certainly not since the first Knights of the Old Republic.

So just a quick question: Is the red, black, and white alien buddy of yours Serin shoots supposed to be dead? I get the feeling I messed up in saving him; he seems like he should be a main character, and I liked him the most.

Oh, and I figured out how to kill those ***damned Thresher Maws. Get to high ground and pummel 'em with the cannon.

Quick question, when it comes time to explore planets do I just go down to the hanger bay to get to the surface? Stupid question I know, but I'm just about to get off the Citadel.

That ****ing Mako. I should probably be happy that you can't tip the ****er over.

I had a bug on the second planet, the one with the dying colony, out on the Prothean Skyway. One time, when I went into the tunnel to fight some Geth, I came out, and the Mako was flat-out gone. I hadn't saved in a while, so I literally had to go on foot from one end of the Skyway to another. WT*??

Here's a question for you all, though, because I'm kinda interested:

Which characters would you say are almost always in your squad? Or, do you rotate them into the squad equally? From my perspective, I don't see the need for Kaidan when you have Liara. But I try to alternate between Ash, Garrus, and Wrex occasionally. I do have a preference toward Wrex, though, if only because some of the armor I've bought for him is really badass. Same with Tali's yellow armor. That's just bitchin'. Of course, I know it depends on your character's class. I play a Vanguard, slow recharge-timers and all.

When you get ready to leave for Noveria, you're given control over the Normandy. I think I used the hangar bay as a transit-point, if I recall correctly (after selecting your next mission)...that said, the elevator inside the Normandy drives me insane. It takes 29 seconds to load a single room. And it's not even a big room. It's just a room.

TWENTY-NINE SECONDS.

But seeing as how I've gone up and down the elevator maybe three or four times thus far, it's not a huge issue for me. The only thing that really bothers me on a frequent basis shipside is the lack of sorting in the inventory. This game is still unbelievably epic.

I always had Ashley with me, and would usually alternate between Garrus and Kaiden until he died on Virmire, then I just took Garrus. Occasionally I'd take Wrex, and I never took Tali. I had Liara with me on Noveria and that was it.

But yeah, always had Ashley with me.

I beat it for the first time two days ago. I played as a male Paragon Soldier, and I too did it about in 18 hours (plus all the time I spent back tracking because I forgot to save) for the same reason. I did some of the missions but once you hit all three main planets, you don't have much control over what you do. I saved Ashley and was glad I did. I had poured wayyy too many points into Kaiden's First Aid and Medicine, which was nearly pointless as a soldier, so I didn't feel like it was a hard decision to choose between an awesome soldier and a weak dude that I had stopped using 15 hours ago. That and the chick was hot. Also, there was no freaking way I was going to choose the Ambassador for the council after he grounded me and prevented me from visiting all the planets I wanted to.

I just started playing through as a female Adept Renegade, which is good because while listening to the dialogue I have already mostly heard it is entertaining just to find out what my poor orphan is going to say next. I sort of wish I had chosen Vanguard, because everything is a lot easier when you just have to shoot stuff. Now I have to take time out to choose biotics, which I hardly paid attention to the first time around. Meh, this way I get the achievement points. Also something interesting is that on the second time, or maybe it is because I am doing it on the more difficult setting, I was able to start with Assault Rifles no matter what class I chose.

There are some problems with the game, I think the main mission is a little on the short side, the combat can be annoying, and it seems like it wouldn't have been too hard to include a bunch more random planets, and put more stuff on them.

Also, is it just me or is ever organic life form to ever exist total morons? They find a giant space station, have no clue who built it, and are just like "wow! somebody built this awesome place and even made sure it had constant free labor, let's make it our center of government!" You would think one of these many civilizations might have the common sense not to move into the Trojan horse and call it home. Also, why is it all these advanced races totally ignore anybody that doesn't have FTL travel?
