Looks like Mass Effect 2 and 3 have been officially announced by EA, with the implication that 2 will be out this year and 3 will be out in 2009. I don't know if busting them out in successive years means EA is going to pretend ME is just another sports franchise or if Bioware will really be able to properly wrap up the series that fast. I hope it's the latter.

I didn't catch the implication of ME 2 being released this year from the article. That'd be great assuming that Bioware has a fully developed and complete game to deliver. They better not churn it out like Obsidian did with kotOR 2...

I was under the impression that Bioware was in the process of developing those titles this year, not releasing them.

Yeah, I'm just basing that off of the "big in '08 and '09" from the title. ME would be better served by an '09 release for part 2 and '11 for part 3.

Some of those features sound like real improvements to the game, actually. Being able to access skills and powers without bringing up a new menu would really help. I wonder what the replacement for the button-pushing thing is going to be. Some kind of puzzle, perhaps?

The hotkey functionality obviously wouldn't work, but other areas could be better organized/done without need for a keyboard or mouse. Certainly not just to have a better way to list/categorize/sort the items in your inventory.

Also, how many issues are there in the game that they wanted to fix, but just couldn't because they needed to make their pre-Christmas release date? I'm not saying that it needs it to be a good game. I loved it ,and would gladly play it again even without these improvements. It would just be nice to get a little something out of this additional work they're doing.

Talk about keeping things secret.
I certainly didn't expect them to be close to finishing the PC-version right when they announce it.

Wow. This just made my day.

I think the issue for the consoles are that people don't want to buy glitchy games that are then fixed after release. That happens too much in the PC world, and is something I was happy to get away from.

Obviously, I think it makes sense though when you have games with continued and evolving online components like CoD4, HALO, Team Fortress 2, Burnout Paradise, or even Guitar Hero. Still, I'd be against it in the case of single-player games like Mass Effect too, if it weren't for the fact that they've been making these improvements for the PC version, and it's almost a freebie to get some slightly-improved functionality in the Xbox 360 version.

The policy of releasing an inferior version to hit your target date with the intention of correcting known shortcomings and errors via patches, though, is definitely something I want to avoid on consoles.

Single-player games should generally be in final form when shipped. And only in cases where additional development ended up in increased benefits (see: the port of Oblivion from Xbox 360 to PS3, and the improvements to the 360 version that process netted) that it should be a standard operating procedure.

The article makes no mention of release dates for ME2 or ME3, it only confirms that they will be coming out.

The title of the article is "EA big in '08 and '09." I guess it's possible that the dates in the title have nothing to do with when the ME sequels will be released; however, when I first read it, I thought otherwise.

What are the major differences in difficulty between hardcore and insanity?

I started a new profile on insanity. Is that insane? Should I reuse a profile?

The example I like to give people who pose that question is the fight with the two assassins you face outside of Chora's Den when you first enter to speak with Harkin.

On hardcore, they are a cakewalk. Overload + throw + overkill = dead.

On Insane, they both hide, spam immunity, and one hit kill you with their shotguns if you get too close. On two separate occasions, it failed to kill both on insanity with a new character.

Insane with a freshly created character is more trouble than it's worth if you ask me.
