Hmmm, that's interesting. Thanks for the advice. I might restart my Insanity playthrough with one of my high 40s characters.

Piece up at IGN 360 on the upcoming content downloads.

Some tantalizing details:

IGN: Do any of the other party members on the Normandy have a particular vested interest in this additional quest?

[Casey] Hudson: The mission certainly strikes home for Ashley, Shepard and Kaiden due to the historical animosity between the human race and the Batarians. In the early days of human colonization of space, the Batarians were responsible for many attacks against mankind.

IGN: This download introduces the Batarian race into the game. Does that mean we'll be able to run into them in places like the Citadel or will they be confined to the new planet the download focuses on?

Hudson: The Batarians' status as one of the galaxy's most aggressive and hostile races means that encounters with them are very rare. For that reason they aren't found in other plots throughout Mass Effect, whereas situations such as the one in "Bring Down the Sky" can arise where you may confront them. We can expect to see more of them in the future however, as Commander Shepard digs deeper to expose the forces that threaten the security of the galaxy.

Some slightly-spoiler-ish info on a few plot elements in the piece, but nothing to ruin the game with. The targeted planet looming closer and closer on the horizon as time passes should create some nice dramatic tension.

According to the interview, BioWare are keeping schtum on whether or not the upcoming PC release of Mass Effect is going to include the Xbox 360 downloadable content on disk, as well as where future DLC fits into the overall series chronology.

Also, contrary to rumor, it looks like you can access this particular content at any point during the main game, though it should get interesting when the inter-sequel downloads become available.

Yup. And given Buff Shepard's history during the Blitz (especially if you're playing as a "War Hero," as I did), I'm looking forward to seeing how many different ways Buff finds to skull**** these Batarians in their many facial orifices for what they did to his homeworld during that campaign.

And then maybe he'll convince Ash and Liara to join in the fun...

So, the DLC has been released, right? Anyone had the chance to bring down the sky?

Downloaded it last night, but haven't had a chance to play it yet, though I hit a couple of installation-snags early on. Basically, if you're playing from a character you've already beaten the main quest with, you have to finish the final boss off again, restart/continue the game from the ending using that same character, and you'll get to the unlock the map-access for Terra Nova onboard the Normandy.

Looks like this is the only way to do it if you want to use that same character again. Looking forward to running through this campaign tonight after I get off work...I'm hearing great things about this content (epic storyline, and not just another uncharted planet), and it makes a nice appetizer for Smash Bros. Brawl tomorrow.

If I have a save from a character like halfway through the campaign... can't I just go then?

To answer my own question, yes, you can! I played it with a level 55 character in the middle of a playthrough... Very fun. The first part gets repetitive I suppose, but I didn't mind it. The ending is GREAT. Plus you get some great items... even I didn't have colossus X yet!!

First impressions:

  • When you first land, you get this "deja vu" feeling. Tough to avoid, though, and using the Mako makes sense in the context of the story. Though too, having the Normandy communicate with Terra Prime would have made sense, even if we don't actually land there. A distress message from Terra Nova itself in order to alert the Normandy/Alliance to its plight would have drawn me into the quest more a bit more intuitively.

  • I hope BioWare won't be restricted by the availability of voice actors for future content.

  • The cutscenes are great. They really do make a difference.

  • The map seems a good mix between linear and sandbox, and I got a nice surprise in the first open area I came to. The "torches" look very nice, as does the view from the asteroid.

  • Another top-notch anomaly. Great easter egg.

  • The dialogue is excellent, as always.

  • It's rather surprising when you see the third or fourth cutscene -- something happens (won't spoil here), and the character's face/body movements/expression was perfect for the scene.

  • I also noticed the music was even better placed than any of the main story-worlds in the game, and it even had a few new tracks. I think the combination of music and the rather more creative and varied combat situations make the combat much more intense and epic to a degree that even rivals some of the main storyline's most intense combat scenes.

As I was saying above, the combat scenes feel very fresh. Mainly because you've got new enemies who fight differently, and that fight with the Varren (I don't think the Varren have ever fought alongside other enemies...especially ones who were their trainers, releasing them, similar to the Futars in the later Dune novels).

And then there's also a little twist to fighting those old hovering fighter-drones...they seem to have altered the AI a little bit on them so that they now zoom all over the place. I had one that was shooting at me in the middle of a room, and so I went behind a doorway that led to its flank, but when I approached the open doorway, he flew right around the corner into in my face and rocketed straight at me, the mother****er.

And then there's one of the most important parts of this new content -- there's FINALLY some great armor for Tali. She had such crap armor all through the game (apart from the yellow armor I bought her earlier in the campaign), and she's now wearing a suit of lovely, red-and-black Colossus X (which Master-Fett mentioned above).

Speaking of the final confrontation, I loved how much of a bastard you could be: warning-shot, graze, wound, then NOT kill him, but leave him humiliated for the Alliance to interrogate. Tee-hee. If I had my druthers, Mass Effect 2 should balance out the UNCs between short, minor quests with smaller plots, and UNCs more like this one, with a richly-developed plot and finer detail.

Everything in this new expansion adds up to a lot more than the usual planetary side-quest scenario. While I never fooled myself that the first DLC for Mass Effect would contain the equivalent of Noveria, the work that goes into a world like that is huge. Are there things that could be better? Yes, but everything starts somewhere.

Couldn't have said it better myself Leto... you nailed every little thing I was going to say.

I'm sorry but killing Calak was just too great... you were just so bad ass, shooting a warning shot, grazing, wounding, and then killing or leaving for interrogation.
I was using a paragon character, and that was a killer blow, letting the woman die to kill the terrorists... 25 renegade. I'll have to remember that when I go to the world as my renegade character.
If there was one thing that turned out less than expected, it would be the fact that I thought the Batarians would have a bit more mystery around them. They were very plain. Not bad, just not much mystique.

50 Gamerpoints too.... that was unexpected but gladly welcomed! If I ever get every achivement in Mass Effect (doubt it with all the completetionist crap) It will be cool to see 1050 gamerscore in a game.

I'll just close by saying, how many developers do you know that would go to the trouble to make a brand new level, with a brand new plotline, characters, models, textures, environments, effects (new cyro containers), weapons, armors, and brand new music to top it all off! All for Downloadable content! I've seen Devs throw some old crap in a new package and throw it up for DLC just to make some more money, but Bioware really went above and beyond with this. It wasn't all that expensive either.... it cost less than the Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack.

I thought it was the same as the H3 map pack?

I like the DLC. It adds a nice mixture of complexity and story to the ME universe. I opted for the light armor colossus X since I had already found Tali Colossus VII or X, I don't remember. Now, Liara has Colossus VII, Garrus has Colossus X (albeit L), Wrex has Colossus IX (heavy), Ash has Colossus VII, and Kaiden has Predator X. Everyone has the Spectre grade X weapons too, except for Tali who carries a Geth Pulse Rifle X for sentimental value.
