Just wanted to throw out my two cents on Mass Effect.

It's, pardon the pun, massively overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game and I love the setting, the music, the characters and the story. It just seems the good folks at Bioware were so busy designing and fleshing out the game world, they forgot a bit about the game itself.

For one, for a RPG, it's way too short. Also, apart from the the next-gen graphics and the shooting , nothing has changed since KoTOR. There's no innovation, no new gameplay ideas. The "open world" is not very open at all. The sidequests are linear and with a few exceptions, all the same. There are far too few really weighty moral decisions, a la Virmire.

Exploring the galaxy, which should have been the coolest part of the whole game, basically amounted to driving very slowly across rocky, desolated wastelands and entering buildings and mines that for some reason look exactly the same on every damn planet in the whole galaxy!

That said, I'm sure Bioware will sort all that out with Mass Effect 2. Part 1 was more about establishing the setting, part 2 will build on that and deliver a game that fulfills all the untapped potential.

I can't wait!

I'm not a huge RPG guy, but I had lots of fun with this game and KOTOR. It makes me want to try other RPG's.

If you think Mass Effect was too short, then you played it wrong.

I've never had a playthrough clock in at less than 40 hours, while 3 of my 8+ clocked in at over 50 hours.

Well excuse for wanting to get on with the story.
Later playthroughs I've managed to stretch into 30-40 hours, just to see everything. But my first playthrough, when I was captivated by the story, amounted to a mere 12.

For having such an expansive universe, the main story is a bit on the short side.
The sequels will set that right of course, but as a stand-alone Mass Effect should be longer.

Come on, even KotOR had more planets.

Regardless of the number of main quest locations, Mass Effect and Kotor are essentially the same length. Every time I've played either, I've finished in the 40-50 hour range.

The only difference is that you cannot speed-run through Kotor because all the planets require you to jump through some pretty lengthy hoops to gain access to the world's star map. Even doing none of the optional sidequest (of which, Kotor has far fewer) a single playthrough probably would take 20 - 25 hours.

I guess it boils down to personal preferences, but I don't think either side-quest/main-quest arrangement is superior to the other.

By the way, watch tossing around the word "planet" in this context. I knew what you meant, but as far as raw numbers go, Mass Effect has far more landable planets and locations than Kotor.

Heh. True dat. And they are all so very exciting! Riddled with buildings and caves that seem strangely familiar!
One even has space monkeys!

But all sarcasm aside, I actually love Mass Effect, and I know I'm being a little hard on it.

So playing the game for 20 hours, reading the entire story and doing every single thing in the game that is memorable counts as playing it the wrong way?

While spending 400+ hours on a game that has roughly only 10 hours of content is playing it the right way? raised_brow

I guess I'll keep playing my games the wrong way, but I still hope you have your fun doing the same thing over and over.

Well, first of all saying it only has 10 hours of content is a blatant lie while saying you "did every single thing in the game" in 20 hours is an exaggeration or evidence that you paid so little attention that you missed content without realizing it.

Let me ask you this: In 20 hours, what level did your character reach, and how many sidequests did you do?

I just finished Mass Effect for the first time, and I agree that it has the same amount of time as KOTOR: which is, for me, about 17 hours. (my second playthrough of KOTOR got to 23). I never never felt like I was playing the game in the wrong way at all, and greatly enjoyed both. What do you do that brings your games to such high hour marks? I know in ME I missed the romance subplot a bit (just couldn't get Ashley to love me) and didn't do a dozen sidquests (I did 30 or so), but what else is there to make the length so much greater?

Note that this is not a complaint. I never finished extra-long games like Baldur's Gate II. 17 hours is plenty for me.

I'm pretty sure 30 is more than a dozen tongue

I have to say the thing that took the most time for me was finding all the resources, tags, diaries and stuff like that.

You misread me: I didn't do a dozen that I knew about, but I did about 30.

I can understand all the resources making ME take a lot longer, but what about KOTOR?

Mis-interpretation, when you say didn't do a dozen, tends to indicate you did less than a dozen, I just thought it was a typo or something.
The planets are longer and there are more of them but not as many side quests in KOTOR.

From IGN

UK, August 8, 2008 - The frankly ridiculous idea of a portable Mass Effect for the Nintendo DS could be a distinct possibility, with BioWare's Miles Holmes recently saying that the developer is looking to bring its existing franchises to the handheld.

"We have a lot of big plans for Mass Effect," said Holmes in an interview with eurogamer.de, kindly translated by its sister site gamesindustry.biz,
"having a DS version would be an awesome way to keep interest alive and keep it going in addition [to Mass Effect 2]".

BioWare is currently hard at work on Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, its first attempt at a DS title and one that could herald the start of a long relationship between the developer and the phenomenally successful handheld console.

IGN are weird. What's so ridiculous about a handheld Mass Effect? I don't think BioWare are saying: "we're going to port Mass Effect to the DS", they're saying, "We might make a game set in the Mass Effect universe for the DS".
