Just bought M4 by Faunts on iTunes (it only had a VERY limited release). First time I actually paid for music online, lol, but worth it. Thanks to Bioware for introducing me to a great indie band from right here in Edmonton!!

Did you get the whole album, or just the one song? I'm very interested in this band. I don't find myself excited by modern rock music anymore, but that one song has sparked some interest.

Hm...those songs might get me to pick up their album.

Mass Effect: Ascension, by Drew Karpyshyn, is now available for pre-order on Amazon. (Release date is July 29.)

Quarians! Maybe Tali's giant, all-engulfing head on the cover! Possibly!
Drew recently had this to say on the official boards about the novel:
Drew Karpyshyn posted: Q: When can Mass Effect fans expect from their first taste of Ascension?
A: Mass Effect: Ascension will set up the second game in the same way Revelation set up the first game. It won’t focus on Shepard (that’s YOUR story as the player), but it will introduce some new characters and themes that will figure prominently in the second game. I also bring back Kahlee Sanders from the first novel, and I’ll take a closer look at biotics and one of the alien species you got to meet in Mass Effect.
Twenty years later...be interesting to see how [this character] fits into the plotline of Mass Effect 2, especially after what happened to this person during the events of Revelation. Knew they'd be coming back somehow, though.
Given the "Ascension" moniker, I'd lay dollars to donuts that the species Drew's referring to are the Asari, and we're obviously going to get a ton of information on the larger galactic situation, post-Saren. The Quarians are fascinating as hell, though, and any new material we get on them will be great. Will he go to the Flotilla in the story? Wonder which particular ending they're gonna be using as the "canonical" one?

Just this morning, Drew provided an update on the storyline of the next novel and a few other things:
Drew Karpyshyn posted: Q: Is that Tali on the cover?
A: That is NOT Tali on the cover. It is, however, a quarian. Yes, quarians play a very important role in the novel, and you will get to learn a lot more about their species and their culture. However, you won’t see Tali or Shepard or any of the squad members from ME in the book. The stories of Shepard and his (or her) squad members are being told in the games, and I don’t want to retell those stories in the books. (Besides, those stories are influenced by the choices you make as a player, so I don’t want to impose my version of the narrative on anyone.)
The novels focus on other characters and events in the Mass Effect universe (it’s a big place, with lots of cool stuff going on). I do make reference to events from the game, but this story stands on its own.
Q: Who are those three people at the bottom? And what are they running from?
A: Okay, without giving too much away, I’ll say the woman on the left is Kahlee Sanders from the first book. The other two are new characters you haven’t met yet. And I can’t really tell you why they’re running without giving too much away.
Q: What else can you tell me about the novel?
A: I can’t really give you a detailed plot-teaser yet. Maybe next update. But I can say that the novel is set a couple months after the events of the first game, and lays some groundwork for the second game. You’ll meet characters and organizations that will play a very significant role in the second ME game, and the novel will give you a deeper look into their backgrounds and motivations. I also take a much deeper look at biotics, and the implications of this amazing phenomenon on humanity and the galaxy as a whole.
Other than that, all I can say is that it’s my typical fast-paced story with some interesting -– and a few morally-questionable -– characters. Like the first novel, it has some dark moments, and more than a few scenes of graphic violence. (Dark characters and graphic violence seem to be a hallmark of my writing...not sure why that is.)
Q: Do I have to play the game before I read the novel? Do I have to read Mass Effect: Revelation to understand this book?
A: Mass Effect: Ascension is a stand alone story. I think people who have read Revelation or played the game will get into the setting more easily, and they might get more out of it –- they’ll appreciate some of the nods to the first book and the game. But it’s not a requirement.
Q: You said earlier you make reference to events in the game. How do you do this if player’s can change what happens through their choices?
A: With the second Mass Effect game, we’ll be able to look at your choices as a player and adjust the narrative accordingly. Obviously, I can’t do that with the book. So when I reference things from the game, I do it in an open-ended or ambiguous fashion. Is that a cop out? Maybe...but I think if you read the book, you’ll see that I get across the most important elements without compromising the Mass Effect game story or the ME: Ascension plot.
We now have the timeframe: two months after the events of the first game. Which means the sequel takes place some months later, as well, since the novel sets up the second game. There'd been some speculation that it would only be a matter of weeks, but it appears that they're giving some ample room for both the novels and the downloadable content to occur in, prior to the start of Mass Effect 2.
Story-wise, I think Drew could easily address Shepard without losing the game's custom story-arcs, simply by using the same "Darth Revan"-hook he's used in the two Darth Bane novels to date. Who's leading the galaxy now, though -- the Council, or Humanity? That's gonna be a tricky issue to skirt in the book, if Drew's being non-commitally "open" as to the first game's ending.
More on "Cerberus" too, please.
Although it's not Tali on the cover, perhaps she returns to the Flotilla after the events of Mass Effect to find that someone had sold them out to the Geth, who may decide to focus on the Quarians as retribution for Tali's involvement in taking out Sovereign. Also, if its primary focus is the Quarians, and if they plan to introduce them in ME2 as a complete species, then one or more of the minor characters in the story could end up playing a major role in the next game.
Also, we know that the Reapers only harvest species that are advanced enough to use the mass effect relays, and so forth. So we've been told, at any rate. Either that, or else they fear organics the same way organics fear A.I./Geth...but at the same time, I don't buy the whole "I am beyond your comprehension" bull that Sovereign proclaims.
I have a feeling that the reasons behind the Reapers' activities will be the primary focus behind ME2, with all-out war with the Reapers being the storyline behind ME3. After all, the biggest surprise of the first game was simply discovering that Reapers existed in the first place. Personally, I have a feeling that the Reapers' extinction-cycle is either a "religious" compulsion, or else a set of corrupted commands from their creators.
Stopping a Reaper fleet -- if the battle against Sovereign is any indication -- is going to be a near-impossible feat, even for several combined navies.
As for nukes, though...this idea might NEVER work. From the Codex:
"A dreadnought's power lies in the power of its main gun. Dreadnoughts range from 800 meters to one kilometer long, with a main gun of commensurate length. An 800-meter mass accelerator is capable of accelerating one 2 kg. slug to a velocity of 283 km/s every two seconds. Each slug has the kinetic energy of 38 kilotons of TNT, three times the energy released by the fission weapon that destroyed Hiroshima."
Several of these bounced right off Sovereign...moreover, Sovereign was only a bloody scout.
Nukes are on par with, and possibly even greater than, the mass-accelerator cannons. The highest confirmed damage we have is the 20-kiloton figure for a MAC deployed by an average Dreadnought. However, nukes in space tend to be less effective. As for resource efficiency, that would depend greatly on what the Alliance uses for power generation. Nuclear-to-electrical energy conversion is not that efficient, so it may be that the MACs use up more resources to power them.
It's clear the Reapers rely primarily on laser weaponry. At least, that's what Sovereign uses. Because mass effect technology is all around us (as engineered by the Reapers) we have few incentives to try to branch into a different type of technology, weaponry in particular.
We're still stuck with slug-launching weapons, essentially what the guns of today are. Wouldn't laser weaponry be more effective at bringing down kinetic barriers? Sure seems like it, in the cinematics. I think, in terms of conventional space-weaponry, lasers would be the most realistic weapon to use on a Reaper. Slug-damage is practically irrelevant.
However, strategy-wise, I don't see the galaxy holding out against Reaper fleets in conventional warfare. Obviously, civilization doesn't have the time to adapt conventional warfare to combating the Reapers. I think fighting the Reapers will have to be done in a more guerrilla fashion.
Or else, the greatest weapon of all:
"Rick-Roll" them.

Leto II I believe you may have the timeline incorrect. If I recall correctly Revelation dealt with Captain Anderson's story as young soldier being paired with Saren some 20 or more years prior to the events of the game. Ascension takes up the story a couple of months after those events. It's a lead into the second game in that it will shed light on groups and species that will play a role in the second game.

Not being confrontational or anything here (it's cool)...but how'd you draw that conclusion? It's all straight -- in the previous posts, I was talking strictly about ME: Ascension being the ME2 prequel, not Revelation (discussing Kahlee being 20 years older, the post-Saren Quarian situation, who's ruling the galaxy after the first game, et cetera).
I never really even talked about the first book, except maybe tangentially once where it tied into the other stories. Anyways, again, everything's on an even keel, there.
Also, some very interesting comments from BioWare's Senior Manager, Matt Atwood:
BioWare senior manager teases with Mass Effect 2 details.
Speaking to VideoGamer.com at EA's Guildford HQ yesterday, BioWare's Senior Manager Matt Atwood shed some light on Mass Effect 2, teasing us with how brilliant the game will be.
"How will it correlate to Mass Effect, the original? There's a lot of really exciting answers to that question. I think that people are going to be blown away," said Atwood. "I've learned some of the things. I don't mean to tease people. The teams are just so brilliant and the story writing is so good that straight out from the beginning of Mass Effect 2, people are going to be in awe."
And what about the story of the second game? Atwood confirmed that Mass Effect 2 would continue the story and that it won't be a prequel.
"The story was always written as an arc, so they are meant to stand alone as great games to play individually, but even better if you play them all, because you get the entire experience, and there are quite a few twists - there'll be quite a few things that people will not expect."
Gamers wanting to know how your crew and characters will be carried over to the sequel will have to wait a little longer for the info, but Atwood did reassure us that BioWare is working on it.
"As far as keeping your crew, and keeping your characters, and bringing them into Mass Effect 2, I don't want to get that specific with regards to what will happen, but I will tell you that things you did and people you interacted with in Mass Effect...you may very well meet up with them again, whether it be the main character or other characters. Other characters take on more significant roles and there's plenty of folks you haven't met yet."
Matt was also kind enough to demo the PC version of Mass Effect. For all the details on what's been changed in the port from 360 to PC, head over to our full Mass Effect PC first-look.
Also, why is there a giant hole in the Destiny Ascension (the Asari flagship)? It's bothered me for a while, ever since I first played the game.
Seriously, what is its purpose? Is it a giant mass-accelator cannon? A hanger for fighters and bombers? Looking at the way the Ascension gets completely pVVnd, despite being the most powerful ship in the Citadel fleet, I imagine the hole isn't a giant mass-accelerator.
Then again, there was something in the Codex about the Ascension's main gun firing mass-effect rounds "the length of the ship" for better accuracy or something, and it's possible that hole in the middle could be where the rounds were accelerated/projected from.
(...Or else it's probably because the Asari don't just stop at clothing to show off their erotic nature.)

Didn't know where to post this. Thought I'd try here...
This is my tribute music video to Mass Effect. I tried to make it as different and unique as possible, gathering footage from almost every promo and trailer I could get my hands on in HD. Almost all of the shots have been composited to my own taste, derailing from the timeline of most trailers. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. Hopefully you'll dig it too!
The music is a shortened version of "Autobots" by Steve Jablonsky from the Transformers movie.
