I love the Mega Man series and yes the soundtrack is classic. The Dr. Wily music is easily one of the best video game music songs.

Mega Man 2 is still one of my favorite games. I think the music in that game rivals that of Zelda and Final Fantasy games as my favorites. The Flash Man theme rocks, as does Wiley's. The game play was very solid, and I think it's a great game.
Why didn't I find this thread earlier? Jeez.

Probably because I've failed to update it for 6 months
I'll try to get a new one posted this week. If anyone wants to "guest host" an installment of 2 titles at some point, PM me.

As a suggestion, Quest, you could start featuring games on the Wii virtual console. Try to help people decide if they're worth the Wii points or not.
Now that the Wii allows classic gaming once more.

Hmmm, guest host, eh...? Sounds like fun.
And for anyone who hasn't played Balloon Fight, there are some really awesome flash versions of the game out there on the internets.

When I got my own NES, Balloon Fight (and Ice Climber) was one of my first games. It had cute music when I lost.

That was actually one of the points about starting this thread- though at the time I started off with only a supposedly "leaked" test list of titles, which doesn't seem too accurate now

Never even seen Balloon Fight
MM2 has been the only MM game I have really played, and I played the hell out of it. It was one of those games where the difficulty was just right.
You'd get stuck on a certain part of a level and couldn't pass it but as you got better at the controls it looked more hopeful but you would still die anyways and wanna quIT BUT YOU PUT CONTINUE "ONE MORE TIME" ANG ZOMG IT WAS SO FRUSTRATING!
Then you finally passed whatever part you were stuck on and felt like a million bucks. Then got stuck on the next part...
The boss fights where fun too. Figuring out what weapon worked best against a certain boss, which invariably meant you had to go to another level and see if that weapon worked better.
And it was all before the internetweb-averse. So if you met someone who knew a level code or how to beat Boomerang-Man...insta-buddy,

My cousin and I used to play that game for hours! I was always the red guy. I wish I still had that game...

Know I haven't been keeping this thread up- but figured I'd bump it in case anyone feels like taking over the reins?

I love MegaMan 2. Even though Quick Man's stage was just brutal, I love the variety of stages this one offers.
On the other hand, I hated that boss that you could only defeat with the Crash Bombers with a passion. You couldn't waste a bomb. At all. And if you failed, you were completely SOL.

If no one minds me trying to revive this, I'll introduce one game, and give my take, like Quest; however, the second will be a one I'm not familiar with, but am interested in purchasing: I would appreciate any one who would weigh in and give me a yay or nay. Let's move on to two current Virtual Console releases: Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis/MD) and Contra III: The Alien Wars (SNES)
Streets of Rage II (1992)
The Streets of Rage series is simply the old school, side-scrolling, beat'em up classic fun of the 16-bit era -- an era that's filled with these gems. Set in a cheesy, post-apocolyptic city, ex-police officers Axel and Blaze, and their friends Max and Skate fight their way throug the crime-ridden streets controlled by the nefarious "Mr. X" to rescue their friend and comrade Adam.
My Take: Come on, cheesy post-apocolyptic brawler? What's not to like? Like most beat'em ups, Streets of Rage 2 is a fairly simply game in it's scope, but adds a new level of complexity not typically seen in brawlers with the series' various super moves. With the tap of a button, players can initiate a super combo of a sort when surrounded, or clear the screen of enemies, at the cost of a little of one's own life bar. Players will quickly learn to withold their super moves until the bosses. Also, a variety of weapons (crowbars, swords, knives, shurikens) can be used to help pummel your adversaries. Long-ranged weapons can be a key strategy against tough bosses. The graphics are good, and fairly colorful for the Genesis. With four selectable characters, co-op and vs. options, anyone who is a fan of side-scrolling brawlers should take a look at Streets of Rage 2. Personally, I beat this game at least two or three times back in the day, and have beat once or twice more on nastalgic re-runs.
Contra III: The Alien Wars
It looks absolutely ridiculous -- completely over-the-top. It looks like... Contra. I really enjoyed the Contra series on the PS2, but I've never got the change to experience it on any of the old consoles. Is it worth my time? How does it stack up next to other run and guns of the day, and the Contra games of later generations? And is that top-down gameplay, too? Frelling awesome.

Contra III was the pinnacle of the series (though I haven't yet played Contra IV on DS)- adding in secondary weapons, bombs, overhead grappling, massive bosses, hard as hell challenges- and with the signature co-op. Did I mention it was hard? I don't think I ever got past the 3rd or 4th level. It mixes things up with overhead Mode 7 levels- and though these might be the weaker element of the game, those stages do have their awesome touches (how can you NOT love dual wielding with both arms stretched out to your side as you spin around in a whirlwind of death?).
It definitely topped Contra & Super C (though there's something to be said for the streamlined simplicity of those two titles and the Konami Code). Of the PS2 Contra games, I've only played Neo Contra, and I can safely say Contra III blows it out of the water (though Neo Contra did have a few holy-damn-ugly bosses, I must admit).
But, I mean- you can;t go wrong with a giant, fire-vomiting turtle, or some Rambo dude riding a missle to shoot an enemy from- I man, that's Nick Fury **** right there.
(btw, vgmuseum is not hot-link friend, alas- it takes some more google image searching to find pics for this I've dug up some fill-in screencaps for ya for this one)
