As a few of you may know, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence came out earlier this month. With its release we now have the ability to play through the entire Metal Gear story. This is a thread dedicated to information, discussion, and anything else Metal Gear. Let's start with the games:

MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!

Metal Gear (Originally for MSX2. Also available for the NES, and MGS3: Subsistence for PS2)

1995, was the year of Solid Snakes first mission. He was a new recruit for the military group known as FOXHOUND led by the great soldier Big Boss. It seems that some terrorists had taken over a stronghold in South Africa and had named it Outer Heaven. FOXHOUND sent in its best soldier, Gray Fox, to to infiltrate the cell and find out what they were doing. When Fox was kidnapped, FOXHOUND sent in its newest recruit to rescue him, Solid Snake. Snake ends up saving Fox and finding out about a walking bipedal tank called "Metal Gear" which has nuclear capabilities. Snake and Fox fight there way through the Outer Heaven forces and destroy Metal Gear. As the escape, the enigmatic leader of Outer Heaven finally makes his appearance. It's none other than the leader of FOXHOUND, Big Boss. Big Boss tells Snake that he had been using the US government to fund Outer Heaven and was building it to become the strongest nation in the world. In the end Big Boss fought Snake and self destructed the entire Outer Heaven base. With only seconds to spare, Snake made it out, leaving Big Boss in the rubble.

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (Originally on MSX2. Also available on MGS3: Subsistence for PS2)

1999. The world has nearly emptied its oil reserves. But thanks to a genius man, Dr. Kio Marv, his invention OILIX will save everyone. It is a substitute for oil that is made for little money. On his way to the US to give his sales pitch for the miracle fuel, he is kidnapped by the terrorist organization Zanzibar Land. The new leader of FOXHOUND, Roy Campbell, sends in Solid Snake to Zanzibar Land to get back Marv. He ends up finding the scientist who created the Metal Gear walking tank, Dr. Petrovich, in the prisons. Apparently Big Boss is alive and well, and has had the man building a new tank called Metal Gear D. While still searching for Marv, Snake encounters the new Metal Gear D, only to find out the pilot is Grey Fox, a former FOXHOUND hero. After a battle, Snake escapes with Dr. Petrovich, only to find out that Marv has already been killed. Luckily he had also left the formula for OILIX on him. Snake is then informed that Dr. Petrovich is not a prisoner, but actually helping Big Boss finish the Metal Gear D. Snake kills the doctor and makes his way out, only to be stopped by Grey Fox again. Snake destroys the Metal Gear, but him and Fox end up in the middle of a minefield. They fight there final battle where Fox is finally killed. This is when Big Boss makes his presence known. Snake who has lost all of his weapons fights Big Boss. In the end Snake ends up taking his cigarette lighter and a can of hairspray to ignite Big Boss, watching him burn. Snake, with OILIX in hand, returns home, and dissapears into Alaska...

Metal Gear Solid (Originally for PS1. The remake MGS: The Twin Snakes is available for GCN)

2005. FOXHOUND is under new management. The leader, Liquid Snake, has turned them into a terrorist group. They had taken over the Shadow Moses base in Alaska where the new Metal Gear Rex was being built. All they demand is the body of Big Boss. Roy Campbell is brought in to find Solid Snake and send him out to save the world again. His mission is to find the DARPA chief and the Armstech president who have been taken prisoner in the base. He finds both of them, and is told very valuable information, but both seem to die from heart attacks at bad moments. Snake goes on to fight his way through FOXHOUNDS group of freaks, from the unstoppable gunman Revolver Ocelot to the psychic mad man Psycho Mantis. He finds help along the way in the forms of Otacon, the designer of Metal Gear Rex and a master hacker, and Meryl, Campbells neice. Along the way many twists and turns happen, including the appearance of a mysterious "Cyborg Ninja" who seems to be neither friend nor foe. In the end it is discovered the Armstech president and the Darpa chief were both injected with an assassination virus known as "FOXDIE", and was created by Naomi Hunter, a woman on Snakes support team for the mission. Snake makes his way deeper into the base until Liquid shows back up, and after tricking Snake, he starts up the Metal Gear Rex. Liquid tells Snake that they are actually clones of the greatest soldier in the world... Big Boss. A fight ensues and with the help of Cyborg Ninja, the Metal Gear Rex is brought down. During the battle Cyborg Ninja reveals that he is really Grey Fox, and that he had been experimented on and transformed into the cybornetic being he was. Sadly, Ninja is crushed by Metal Gear Rex soon after... Snake also gets knocked out during the Metal Gear Rexs destruction and is awakened to find Meryl strapped to a bomb. Liquid challenges Snake to a hand to hand fight on top of the burning Metal Gear Rex for the life of Meryl. After Snake defeats him, he and Meryl escape from the Shadow Moses facility only to be chased down by Liquid yet again. In the end, it is found out that both Liquid and Solid were both injected with FOXDIE, and after a chase sequence, Liquid dies from the virus. Snake is told to continue living, while he and Meryl find a snowmobile and drive off.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Originally for PS2. MGS2: Substance is available for Xbox and PS2)

2007. Revolver Ocelot had survived the Shadow Moses incident. He ended up selling the plans for the Metal Gear Rex to every country that had the money to buy them. Snake and Otacon have made up there own organization to stop Metal Gears from being made. They find out that the Marines are building something called the Metal Gear Ray, an anti-Metal Gear Metal Gear. During their investigation aboard a tanker ship, Ocelot shows up stealing the Metal Gear Ray for himself. It is also of note, that Ocelot has had his arm replaced with the arm of Liquid Snake, and it appears that Liquid possesses Ocelot from time to time. Ocelot takes the Metal Gear Ray and destroys the tanker, leaving Solid Snake dead. Solid Snake is also blamed for the disaster.

2009. FOXHOUND has returned again, with Campbell in the head seat. The terrorist group Dead Cell has taken over the ocean cleanup facility the Big Shell. Not only that, but the President of the United States was in the Shell at the time and taken hostage. FOXHOUND sends in the VR trained soldier, Raiden, to save the President. During the mission, a soldier named Pliskin helps Raiden along the way. Dead Cell is being led by the man Solidus Snake, who is also former President George Sears, and also the third clone of Big Boss. It eventually found out that the Big Shell is nothing more than a cover for Arsenal Gear, a mobile fortress. Solidus is fighting against an omnipresent group known only as "The Patriots". Ocelot who was working for Dead Cell, reveals himself to be working for the Patriots. Meanwhile Raiden himself was duped into helping the Patriots along the way. Pliskin reveals himself to be Solid Snake, and everything falls apart. Ocelot steals the Ray from Solidus, but is possessed by Liquid Snake yet again. He, Ray, and Snake all fall into the ocean. The Arsenal Gear ends up driving its way into the middle of New York City, where Raiden and Solidus fight their final battle. The Patriots tell Raiden their ultimate goal, which is to use Arsenal to stop the flow of information getting to public knowledge. A worldwide censorship. After Raiden defeats Solidus, Snake gets a disk from him with the details on the Patriots whereabouts. Raiden finds his girlfriend in the crowded streets of New York, as Snake walks off, beginning his search for the Patriots themselves.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Originally for PS2. MGS3: Subsistence is available for PS2)

During the small mission, Snake is ambushed by a group known as the Ocelot unit, lead by a very young Revolver Ocelot. Soon afterwards Snakes mentor The Boss, tells him she is going to the Soviet Union. She gives the Soviet leader, Volgin, a couple of nuclear warheads to sweeten the deal. He and EVA escape but pursued by the Shagohod with Volgin behind the wheel. Snake destroys the tank, and Volgin is struck by lightning and killed. It is at this point The Boss confronts Snake. She reveals that she was actually working for the US to get back the Philosophers Legacy from Volgin. The Legacy is actually the wealth of the richest families in the world. For the mission to succeed Snake is forced to fight The Boss. Snake kills her, and takes the name of Boss for himself. When he returns home, the President gives Snake the title of Big Boss and the rest... is history.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)

Little is known so far. Snake is an old man now, something has gone wrong. The world is in turmoil, and Metal Gears patrol the street. That's really is all that is known.

Here are some other games from the series that are not part of the main story:

Snakes Revenge (NES)

VR Missions (PS1)

Ghost Babel (GBC)

Metal Gear Acid (PSP)

Metal Gear Acid 2 (PSP)

Well, I hope that you find this more than a little informative. I really do think it's one of the greatest series in Video Game history, and I think everyone should play them. Now that the entire series is available in the US since MGS3:Subsistence came with the original Metal Gear 2 which was previously un-released state side, I figured it was time to give everyone a little history lesson. At the least, I hope people come in here talking about their love for the games, at the most I hope it makes someone run out and get the series.

The battle with the Boss at the end of the most heart-renching fight of all time. Then the ending when everything is revieled and you realize what happened is bar far the most moving moment of video game history and if you disagree you're a filthy commie with no soul. And Ghost Babel is pretty awesome.

Of course, they're not on a tiny screen, with memory constraints.

But they got rid of Sean Connery as Big Boss for these new versions. sad tongue

I'm amazed we didn't have a thread like this before.

Metal Gear Solid is one of my favorite collection of games, ever. Snake Eater is amazing, and Subsistence is really great. I can't wait for Metal Gear Solid 4. Not only will it bring it all to a close, but it looks amazing.

Here's a question.

Kojima says Raiden will return in MGS4. But he's Raiden will have changed a lot. In fact, he says Raiden will actually be "cool". Do you think even Kojima could pull that off?

I really had no problem with Raiden. He was what he was, a rookie. I can't fault him by being overwhelmed by everything. And when compared to Snake, everybody is lame.

That is true, Snake has got to be the baddest dude in video game history, maybe second only to the actual Bad Dudes. But Raiden was just a bit too... angsty. I was so sick of him and Rose arguing through the game, it seemed so out of place. I thought we had already done the whole, "can love bloom on the battlefield" thing in MGS1, I don't need an old (young) couple having lovers spats over and over. Not to mention, yes everyone compared to Snake is a punk, but did he have to be THAT girly?

Overall though, I seem to have a better reaction than most to Raiden, some people just downright HATED him. Overall, I found him to be not AS bad as everyone says.

Alright, I'm going to bring up another question on the subject of fan gripes though. MGS2, where do you put it on your order of favorites for Metal Gear games?

It seems to be argued about the most. Personally I LOVE the storyline, all the depth, even the multiple back stabbings. I like stories that I have to see a couple times to "get". In fact, I felt a little put back by how the story seemed a little less deep in MGS3. (Though more emotional, I'll say that.) I was hoping for another thinker, or more abotut the Patriots.

I just reas somewhere that it seemed like only American gamers really hated Raiden, he was popular in Japan, so maybe it just has to do with our cultures, Raiden's more a ninja type guy and Snake is just Snake grin

I liked Raiden, ofcourse when I first played through MGS2 I hated him but after I had time to breathe he grew on me. I think that really the only thing Kojima needs to do to make him cool is make him more expierenced, and if the game takes place 10 years Im sure Raiden will know what he's doing, even if its less then 10 years, after the whole SOL expierence, Im sure he is better. I also hope that he left Rose at home adnn she wont bug him every 5 minutes about what tomorrow is.
