Apparently, it's like Battlefield Heroes, if you want new content, like clothes or funny hats, you have to pay for them.

Before I go any further, let me just say that I know I've been a total loser and I haven't posted here in like 1,000 generations (or was it 1,000 years, George?). I apologize. It's awful. I miss you guys and I think about you guys often (especially Aaron, mmm). I hope everyone is doing fabulously.
Okay, on to business:
Several months ago, just after graduating college in December 2007, I applied to join the Peace Corps. My reasons for doing so would take a few paragraphs to explain, so I won't cover that in this initial post.
For those of you who don't know, the Peace Corps is a U.S. government agency that sends volunteers all over the world to third-world or developing nations. 190,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 139 host countries since 1961 to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation. Currently, over 8,000 volunteers serve in 74 countries in Central America, South America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Pacific Islands.
So anyways, the past several months have been spent filling out government forms, acquiring my passport, writing application essays, gathering letters of recommendation, scheduling doctor appointments, getting immunized (I fainted flat out on the doctor's table when they drew blood), and generally slogging through the lengthy Peace Corps application process. Some weeks were spent just waiting for a phone call or a letter in the mail from the Peace Corps. I called those times the "doldrums" (look it up in your Book of Nautical Terms). But then there were some days when the winds of change blew with particular force and a dozen things concerning my application would happen at once.
About two weeks ago, the the phone rang. It was the Peace Corps. They were calling to inform me that I had been accepted as a Peace Corps Volunteer to serve in the Republic of South Africa. More shockingly, they told me that I would be departing on --get this-- July 15th! So, in less than one month I'll hop on a plane to South Africa where I'll live for 2 years and 3 months. Peace Corps volunteers don't receive "leave" like military servicemen, so I'll be gone for the entire 27 months. I'll return to the U.S. on September 11, 2010.
I'll be primarily working with the public school system in South Africa, which is currently undergoing a major revamp to educate the black community, which, of course, due to apartheid, did not receive the same quality of education (if any) that the white population had access to for many years. I'll also be doing a lot of work with the government and NGOs to promote HIV/AIDS awareness for obvious reasons.
I'll be living one of the rural impoverished areas of South Africa--not one of the modern cities like Johannesburg or Pretoria or Cape Town. I won't have internet access. I most likely won't even have access to electricity on a regular basis. However, there is good ol' snail mail. The South Africa postal service, however, especially in the rural area, is atrocious. Letters will take 6 - 9 weeks to arrive. But if any of you want to write me ever, let me know and we'll work it out.
(And I'm sorry to totally derail this thread, but I wanted to tell you guys.)
Sithy

Damn buddy....
I seriosly tried to join the peace corps way back in the day, but the combination of the paperwork and my history made it impossible.
CON-FREAKEN-GRATS on getting accepted and getting an assignment. I wish I could of, its a freakin' REAL LIFE ADVENTURE.
Awesome. Just awesome. I could type some crap about being proud, or something. Not gonna do that, but every South African better know what to say if he is asked "What's a forceboat"

Wow. So Hollywood aint gonna meet the Sithy director.
Dude, when down that part of the world, keep an eye open for Meikle Hotels (my relatives who hopped off a boat bound for NZ from Scotland) there or Zimbabwe, spose to be a decent hotel chain.
Anyway that's kinda crazy, take care, try not to have sex with everyone or any wildlife. The lions bite (in a bad way).
Take care Kelvin.

Great stuff Kevin! Best of luck with it, and if you do get the occasional trip into a big city, let one of us know you're still alive so it can be posted here.

Nope. I actually won't be pursuing the film thing at all anymore. During my last 3 semesters of film school I did internships at 3 big editing studios in Chicago, and I came to absolutely loath the industry and the working environment. I made up my mind to get out of the biz last fall. I left my internship at the editing studio, and I began to turn down all future offers for more freelance video editing work (I was doing a decent amount of paid freelance editing work at the time)
I've always had a huge interest in history, international politics, and culture (especially the Middle East), and so after graduation I decided to pursue those interests. A large percentage of US foreign diplomats and international NGO workers begin their careers by serving in the Peace Corps, and so I'm considering this as a sort of first step in that direction. Ultimately, I'd like to live and work (at least for a time) in the Middle East. Anyhoo, it's a very different career path, but one that I'm (of course) very excited about.
Thanks for all the well-wishes, dudes (and dudettes).
