Games Forum Thread Index
The following is a compilation of established threads in the Games Forum. Minor threads and topics that didn't promote discussion weren't included. This was created in hopes of cutting down on redundant topics in this forum. PLEASE check here before making a thread! However, if you would like to post in a pre-existing, but LOCKED thread, please PM a mod.
Also, if you have any suggestions for how the Game Index should be formatted or if there are any threads not in here that should be, feel free to contact Handmaiden_Yane about your questions/comments/compliments/complaints.
GAMEZ PHORUM FAQ
oh emm gee
FORCEBOAT
Hello, my fellow internet wanderer. Chances are, you've wondered in here because you are a...

But you know what? That's okay! Eh? What's that? You don't know what a n00b is?

Thank you, Lois. But anyway, onto the whole purpose of this FAQ. You, as a n00b, need some guidance! A helping hand in a lost and dying world! We're to help. Well, sort of. We in Gamez: don't like redundancy and don't generally like people who try too hard to fit in...but if you keep your head about you and act smart, you'll fit in just fine.
CHAPTER I: n00bs and the World Around j00
"Something n00bish is anything that is either pointless (repetition of pointlessness is especially frowned upon), completely out of context, something horribly specific and random, or anything that causes a responce that makes a mod really, really want to angst and lock a thread." -SoloCommand
The main issue of concern is: Redundancy
Games isn't a large forum like the movie forums, or the JCC. We're something of a core close community for the most part. We know the forum well, and know what threads have already been posted. When new and redundant threads show up, the forum regulars can often be annoyed. They will often then proceed to mock you. This doesn't happen as often recently as it used to, but the more redundancy occurs, the less tolerant the forum regulars get. "How do I know if something has already been posted?" you ask. That is where the Games Forum Index comes in, my friend. It has a listing of all the major threads. You should check there before posting. You should also do a forum search. This search function is right next to the post new topic button, so you can't ever say you didn't see it when you've gone ahead to make a new and redundant topic. In short, please do not make redundant threads. Yes.
Now, not to seem like a n00b:
"Everyone must assume I'm a n00b because I just registered recently! How, oh wise Aragorn327, can I ever not seem like a n00b?" Well, I shall tell you, just because you asked. Your registration date may mean you're new to the boards, but that doesn't mean you won't be respected. That lack of respect comes from your posting style. Correct grammar and spelling go a long way. You'll notice forum regulars often switch to 1337 or gaemspek in which we misspell things. This is primarily done only when mocking something. Consider it an advanced forum technique. If you use it too early, chances are people will be annoyed at you. First impressions can go a long way, and if you make me think you're an idiot, it'll take awhile to make that go away. In addition, do not overuse exclamation points.
Example:
Hello! I like Star Wars! Have you heard about Empire at War?!! It looks so good! I like KotOR as well!!
May the Force Be With You!
This post is in fact, annoying. A better way of posting this would be:
Hey, how's it going? I'm a Star Wars fan that recently found these boards after seeing Revenge of the Sith. I've been following Empire at War, and I think it looks pretty neat. I'm also a large fan of the KotOR series as well.
"Aha I see it now! I will go make a thread like that right now!" No! Look at what you're saying- anything with that many exclamation points, when in regard to something on the internet is almost always a bad thing A thread like that would still be deleted. It would be more suited to be a single post in the JCNGL Gaming Lounge, which is the forum's main social thread, rather than a new thread. Remember, every time you can post in an existing thread rather than making a new one, you gain two zaklor points. Everyone likes those.
Something else- paragraphs and line breaks are also good.
Not over using smileys/emotes is also a good thing.

CHAPTER II: Redundant Threads and their Natural Habitats
Redundant threads are basically the creation of new threads that already exist in one way or another, or whose topics are already encompassed in another, existing, thread.
If you create a redundant thread, you will be advised to go to the existing thread on that topic and your thread will be locked.
This is nothing to be angry or embarrased about. Just take your ideas to the existing thread and continue.
Be aware, some users on the Jedi Council can get vexed by redundant thread posters. They may get rude to you if you post a thread that's already in existence. They shouldn't be rude - they should politely point you to the existing thread, and PM (Private message) a moderator to close the old thread. The2ndQuest and Aragorn327 are the best people to PM in this case. You can also try asking another experienced Gamez poster.
Obviously the index at the top of this thread is a good place to find existing threads. If you're unsure of whether your topic is appropriate to start a new thread with, PM the games forum moderators and ask their opinions.
Back to top | Back to Table of Contents
CHAPTER III: Official Threads and How It Applies to the Average Consumer
Official Type threads (such as Knights of the Old Republic: General Discussion) are where a game, or one aspect of a game are talked about.
Some threads become the "official" threads, even though they don't have the word "official" in the title, and they don't necessarily need to be started by a moderator.
Normally the first thread that occurs when a new game is announced becomes the official discussion thread.
For example there is one main thread for discussing Knights of the Old Republic III. It has all sorts of topics within it, but as we're still not sure when the game is actually going to be made, it keeps the place tidy to keep as much KOTOR III discussion in that thread as possible.
When something urgent / important comes up, it's OK to start a new topic. And when the game gets close to release, a number of different topics will be created so people can get the info they seek without wading through too much stuff that's not interesting to them.
For an example of this see all the different Knight of the Old Republic topics that have been set up (look in the index).

CHAPTER IV: Codes, Hints, Cheats, Walkthroughs, etc. for Your Past, Present, and Future
The web is a wonderful resource, and while it's likely that someone who uses this forum knows the codes you seek, you are much better off if you show some initiative and do the research yourself (and you'll get the answers much quicker).
We recommend the search engine Google. Just type in something like "star wars racer revenge cheats" and look at all the sites that Google finds for you!
Alternately there are many, many gaming sites to try (do a search on each site for the game in question). A small selection is:
If you want codes for any recent Star Wars games, we may already have a thread for you here. See the index.
If you do need that personal response, or the above searches don't help, try PMing a moderator or a Games regular.
Please do not start a new thread asking for a particular game's codes / hints etc, as it will be locked.

CHAPTER V: Warez, Cracks, or Pirates Info and How It Affects You

Piracy is bad.
We don't support it here because-
a. It takes money away from Game Developers, so they're less likely to make good quality games in future.
b. LucasArts employees check in here every so often. We cannot be seen to be condoning piracy.
c. It makes you go blind.
Any threads asking about pirated software will be promptly locked and / or deleted.

CHAPTER VI: Non-Star Wars Games and Their Impact on Today's Society
This forum is housed on a Star Wars website. By default we enjoy playing most Star Wars games, because it's a love for Star Wars that brought us here in the first place.
While Star Wars games will be the main focus of this forum, this forum is not for exclusive disussion of Star Wars games.
It is perfectly OK to discuss any non-Star Wars electronic / computer games here.
Other forums here also allow for non Star Wars discussion...especially the JCC.

CHAPTER VII: Rules Concerning Flaming/Rudeness/Swearing and What We Can Do to Stop It
There is no excuse for being rude/mean/flameish towards newbies, no matter how bad their post may seem to you.
It is the duty of any "veteran" of the games forum to welcome new visitors and make sure that they have a good experience here.
They are the new-blood for our message boards and as such they should be treated with respect. If there is a serious problem, contact your local mod or a forum admin (best bet is to any of the Gamez modz... The2ndQuest, and Aragorn327). If you have time to post a "LOCK THREAD" image, you must also have time to be constructive and offer a link to an existing thread and/or PM the mods.
Flaming will not be tolerated in any form; ie. thread redundancy flames.
Having said that, any new visitor to this forum should try and learn and stick to the rules. If new visitors don't post redundant topics (or other annoying things that draw attention) there would be no opportunity for older users to flame.
Read up on the Welcome and Redundancy entries in this FAQ, in particular.
Also, swear words are forbidden across this whole JC website. Use your common sense. Also we don't allow "masked swearing", where a few letters are replaced with "***", nor generally acronyms such as "wtf" or "stfu". There's simply no need for them. It's not hard to think of an alternative that is non-offensive.
Swear words will be edited from posts, and disciplinary action will be taken on repeat offenders.

CHAPTER VIII: Free Internet 1337sp34k Course--yours for $4.98!
Wikipedia.com defines 1337 as an online culture and/or attitude, as well as a language code, among the Internet population. Here at Gamez we are quite fond of 1337 and other such game speak (eg. possibly a lot, you are not wrong, <3, etc.). Do not be alarmed at its appearance. Rather, marvel in wonder and maybe even take a crack at deciphering it.
For help, there is a 1337 translator, but be warned that there are many 1337 dialects and you may not always understand what we are saying. Don't ask us what we mean or else we might be forced to take drastic measures...just go along with the flow and thou shalt be happy.

CHAPTER IX: Forceboat and other such oddities-please don't tap the glass!

What is Forceboat?
Forceboat is a boat made of force, obviously. Its true origins are murky and relatively unknown.
What can I do to become an honored and respected poster?
To become an honored and respected poster, we ask only two things:

and

Suggestion Box
Basically the purpose of the suggestion box is for you, the users to come to this thread with any ideas you may have to improve the overall well-being of the forum. If you think the mods are doing bad in here say so. If you think we need a thread on GTA + SW say so in here. Need more mods say so. Every games regular getting colors for a day? Say so. Just make sure to provide plenty of support for whatever it is you wish to suggest. Also you may be applauded for your suggestion or somewhat mocked, people here are honost. Brutally. So keep that in mind.

We need to either expand the GCN section to also include Wii titles or make a separate section for it (probably best to combine, ala GBA/DS or XB/360):
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Red Steel
Super Smash Bros Brawl
A PS3 section will probbaly be needed as well.
Ubisoft presents: Assassin's Creed [PS3 | 360]
and for the DS section:
New Super Mario Bros.

I'll reorganize it hopefully this week to add the new sections. A major overhauling, though, is scheduled for my fall break which is in about three-four weeks.

I'm using my school's server and someone must have gone in and deleted something they shouldn't have. I'm working to get it back up on the same server or maybe I'll have to relocate it. I'm hoping to have the problem fixed within the week.

Someone needs to change the Index link up top. And replace it with this.
If you click at the top of the page where it says. Games Forum Link: it leads you to this locked topic with outdated mark up/links. Can we get that changed? Or is my browser having a brain fart?

Mainly because the systems are launching soon (well, 360 has been out, but it's part of the same console war) so the stickies are meant to make them most visible as traffic for such discussion increases as we go from the launch into the holidays, when they'll be most useful. A couple months after that (at this point, we're thinking after the Euro PS3 launch), they'll be unstickied.
So, basicly, the aim wasn't to have a sticky thread for every platform out there- which is one reason why the DS and PSP threads weren't stickied, for example. And you don't want to have too many sticky threads, otherwise you start to lose the point of them to begin with.

i dont know about other people but usually its the stickies that my eyes just dont acknowledge, i just dont see sticky threads ever because its usually forum rules and stuff so i dont even pay any attention to them. I hadnt even known there were console war threads up there untl just about a month ago.
