sometimes the bundle deals offer games that are the cheapy kind. They aren't usually the high quality games. Word of warning: Wiis are bought up in great amounts by resellers, so beware, they will still be hard to find.

Your best bet would be to check out sites like gottadeal.com or a black friday ads site like bfads.net and see if anyone has a Wii bundle listed.

Good Luck!

Or you might just get lucky and find a wii system (just the basic system with one controller, one nunchuck and the WiiSports).

"Sonic the Hedgehog would like a word with YOU."

I'm as die-hard a SOnic fan as you can be, but Nintendo had the hardcore gamer from the NES to the SNES. N64 is very arguable too.

I've been seeing tons of Wiis and Wii Fits lately. They're just sitting there whenever I go into a store.

Good luck, hope you find one.

Did "hardcore gamers" even exist back in the pre-PS2/XBOX era? I never heard the term before then.

Yeah, it's an annoying and overused term, and one that can't even justify its own existence. There have been shooters, endless RPGs, puzzle and family games since forever. So I don't know why there suddenly has to be a strict divide between "casual" and "hardcore" games.

So, I bought a Wii for the family for Christmas. I know to play Gamecube games on it I need to buy 2 Wii Gamecube controllers and a memory card of some sort.

Just wondering about saving regular Wii games - is there internal memory that holds save-game information, or do I need to buy a memory card for those too? Does a memory card come as part of the standard Wii bundle?

And is it correct that Wii's have a built in wireless internet port, so it will see my house's wireless lan without any further hardware? What happens then, is there an online Nintendo 'website / hub / whatever' that the Wii will automatically 'see' and connect to? And what do you do there - buy small games, upload Mii's, swap high-scores... that sort of thing?

There is internal memory (I am not sure how much, though, its by "blocks")

There's the Wii Shop channel where you can redeem WiiPoints cards (that sell for $20 and have 2000 points on them) and buy virtual console classic games like Super Mario Brothers. You'll need a Classic controller if you end up buying any virtual console games (because playing the VC games is a little easier w/ the classic controller, plus, its required for a few of the VC games.

As long as you have a router, you just have to read the setup information that comes in the instruction book/information book on how to set up the Wii for the internet. The internet channel allows you to browse online (the opera browser was free when it was first released, but now costs 500 wiipoints).

Also, I'd recommend a USB keyboard for some tasks as using the WiiMote for typing gets difficult. I recommend the Classic 200 Logietch Keyboard. You'll have to be able to do a system update before you get the keyboard working.

I think there are probably others that can help you out with other questions.

Connecting a Wii to the internet is fairly straight forward IIRC. If you've already got a home hub it's easy.

Although all I ever used it for was the weather globe.

Thanks, much appreciated.

Also, I've read a bunch of conflicting stuff, but anyone know if games are region locked?

Specifically, will PAL games bought from the UK work in the Australia/NZ region?

Wii games are region-locked. However, Europe/Ocenia is usually one region so you should be fine anyways.

If you have GCN controllers, you don't need to buy wii-specific GCN controllers.

The Wii's online functions work in a few ways:

-Updates through settings menu and register Friend Codes.
-Recieve messages from other users on your Friends List (your disc slot will glow blue when you get such a message, even when the system is in stand-by mode, assuming you have the WiiConnect 24/7 feature enabled)
-Miis with the migration option enabled will appear in the Mii Parade section of users on your Friends List, from which they can choose to bring to their regular Mii Plaza area for use in games and such. Likewise Miis from them will appear in your Parade area.
-Wii Shop Channel, in which you connetc to access Virtual Console and WiiWare content, redeem WiiPoints or buy points via credit card.
-Other online channels, such as weather, polling, web browser, etc.
-Mutliplayer functions accessed through a specific game title, ala Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart, etc.

Thanks. I don't have old GCN controllers, the Wii is my first console since about 1983. I see that the Wii 'classic controller' is the same as the Wii Gamecube controllers (3rd party) that are being sold here.

So, does anyone else have Animal Crossing: City Folk yet?

My friend code is in my sig. It's been fairly fun so far, and addicting like any other AC game. Hopefully this year I'll get the full snowman set.

And hopefully I'll learn to not be so fast on the trigger when fishing. And hopefully tuna will show up soon so that I'm not just nickel and dimeing my loan using Sea Bass, Red Snappers, and Football fish.

Cube controllers are cheap as chips on ebay, even the official ones. Better than buying the classic controller

I have it. I've had it since Day 1, but I don't do a whole lot of WiFiing at the moment (I did a lot that first week to trade fruit). I've made two perfect Snowmen already. Glad its easier this time (its more like AC:WW snowman making).

If you're really interested, you can PM me for my FC....don't want to derail this thread. wink
