Actually, no. The HDMI converter is sold separately at around $60, +/-. So you can get a regular console and then purchase the HDMI converter later IF you really want/need it.

A converter that upscales to HDMI? raised_brow

Yeah.. I think I'd rather just spend a few pounds more and by a proper HDMI enabled machine, with a future-proof HDD attached. But whatever floats your boat.

So far the hubby and I have avoided seeing the RRoD on both the old Premium (which comparable newer models currently being sold are now called "Pro") and our new Elite 360s. I shall continue to keep my fingers crossed, though.

The main difference between the Elite and the Pro now a days is the size of the HDD, having a HDMI cable included in the box, and your preference in color (white vs. graphite near-black). All newer 360s should have the newer, cooler chipset within them. (Only way to tell indirectly is to look at the powerbrick that comes with your machine and see if it's 170v instead of 2-something, IIRC.)

Personally, I like the added HDD space of the Elite (and we already upgraded our old Premium to a 120GB HDD), but then again, we play games like Oblivion, Mass Effect, Overlord, and Halo 3 which have a potential for big DLC, we tend to keep our old saves rather than erasing them, and once in a while the hubby and I will DL a cartoon episode we really like.

If you get a Pro and don't do a lot of downloading, the 20GB HDD should do you for quite a while. (Strife mentioned recently he had seen something about MS considering phasing out the 20GB HDD in favor for replacing it with a 60GB HDD...haven't seen anything myself yet, but might be something to keep an eye out for.) Pros should have the HDMI slot on the back now, but if you're not in a rush to use that connection, I'd suggest at least get a VGA adapter for the 360. We've connected it both ways...both very sweet...

Yeah, I decided I'm gonna stick with my 360 Pro. I just don't see myself needing 120 gigs. And the component cables that came with my console are fine enough for the HDTV we have in the den. happy

I got the Elite last fall. I maybe have used 20 gigs downloading random demos I played for a few minutes and will probably never play again. My brother figured how to hook it up to a 500 GB external hard drive and now I could have all the movies and TV shows I could only previously play on my PC on the HD tv. I know there is some way to hook up the 360 to the PC, but that was far too complicated for me to try and figure out.

The HDMI cable was nice, but looking back I really didn't need 120 GBs, 20 would probably have been just fine. I might download the expansions for Oblivion and Mass Effect, but I don't plan on paying for movies on the 360 when I can't move them to the PC or my Ipod. It really is sad that at this point it is far easier to pirate than to purchase.

Sounds like the Premium/Pro is the way to go.

Ok another question, about Xbox Live. I'm assuming you can use your existing interent connection for this, but how do you link that to your xbox? Also, I've seen a wireless bridge on Amazon, and the comments for it seemed to indicate that you could use this to have a wireless internet connection to your xbox, but does you exisitng internet connection need to be wireless?

Not necessarily. My 360 came with an ethernet cable that I ran from the console to the wireless router. I'll probably get the wireless adapter but that won't be for a while, probably after I get a HDTV for my room.

If you have a regular router, just plug an ethernet cable from an available port to your 360. You may have to consult with you local ISP to verify that the ports for Live are open. If you want to go the wireless route, you will need the wireless bridge. I use the one that was made for the original Xbox and it works just fine (it's cheaper too, if you can find it somewhere). Once you plug it in you'll have to go to the console's Network Settings so it detects the wireless network. If the network has WEP-encryption security, you'll have to manually enter the 26-character key so that your Xbox connects to your wifi network. It's a good thing to do in any case; if you have an unprotected wireless network that creates a hotpsot where anyone can connect through your connection, it might create some unwanted latency problems when playing online, as well as increased security for your entire network.

I only tried wireless once, and that was with my old Xbox. It can be a pain in the butt if your wireless system is encrypted and you're not entirely sure which 24-digit character key you need to enter (ie: your ISP documented everything BUT that one bit of info in an easy to find place). I didn't even attempt to get it to work for my 360s, but I know for many of those who do use it, it works very well.

As posted previously, if you do go wireless, make sure to only do so with a secure wireless network. It's too easy for people to hope onto insecure wireless networks. At best, they just use your bandwidth. At worse, it makes it very easy for someone with malicious intent to hack into your computer or network and do things you really rather they didn't do to you.

Personally, I just use a router and run wires through the house. tongue

You can usually find your WEP key by logging into the router itself. If you're lucky, whatever code you randomly created (or was otherwise randomly created by the router's software), should appear there, more often than not in whatever Security Tab/header your router's software displays. It's then all a matter of copying it into an easy-to-find document and then manually entering it on the Xbox.

A good wireless connection will usually show no difference in terms of lag or performance in relation to an old-fashioned wired connection. In fact, it might be a more feasible alternative if the notion of throwing unsightly cable from one place to another is simply not an option (say, particularly, in the eyes of a significant other that will say nay to any attempt to throw unsightly cables around). blush

Luckily the hubby and I are equally geeky, so wires (up to a point) don't bother us. tongue

That was the thing. It was my first time using that sort of setup and I couldn't find the security info anywhere and what I could find wasn't 25-characters. Probably a combination of user error and trying to get hardware that doesn't like working together to play nice. I'll probably make another go at it eventually, but that's only because we're considering finally getting a laptop sometime down the road. *shrugs*

I do. I thought about getting a wireless thingy because we have a bunch of computers in the house and the router was already upstairs and I wanted the 360 downstairs with the TV. But instead of paying $100 on some stupid wireless connector I just moved the router downstairs. The only problem is that my PC didn't come with a wireless card so I have to switch the ethernet cables depending on which one I'm using. It really isn't that hard, and I actually I have a wireless connector I swiped from the failed mayor campaign I worked on that I could put on my PC, but then my internet would be slower and I don't want to bother. Switching the ethernet cable to the router right next to the TV isn't that big of a deal.
