Someone tell me why there are always closed bridges. Always.

I want a GTA game with free roaming from the start!

Attempting to bypass that by swimming to sweet sweet freedom doesn't go well sad

All I want to do is go to the fancy clothing store so I can look nice while doing menial labor that is far below me. Is that too much to ask? Must I dress like a bum and drive in clunky cars while hitting up random ethnic shops for protection money? sad

Is it as good as the reviews say they are? Personally, I don't see how. I thought the other ones were vastly overrated. This one looks like the exact same, just better graphics.

I think they're being overzealous.

I'm disappointed so far. It'll probably get better once I get used to the gameplay and the horrendous driving system, though.

But I gotta say, the story is definitely top-notch.

I picked it up today, played through the first dozen or so missions and tried out many of the multiplayer games. I think many of them would me much more fun with people you know, so if anybody wants to play, give me an IM and I'll send you my gamertag. And if for some reason you're using a PS3, I just don't know what to tell you.

Also the easy way to explore is to go to the free mode multiplayer. I hoped in a helo and as I crashed into a tall skyscraper, I was stuck on a ledge and was forced to jump off. That was the funniest thing I have seen yet.

Oh God, it's wonderful.

The driving is tougher, definitely, but so freaking rewarding when you start to get the hang of it. The speed is ludicrous when you get a bit of road in front of you. Man, there is so much to love already, and I only clocked maybe three or four hours yesterday evening, and around three-and-a-half hours the night before that. The lighting...it is outrageously good.

(Is there any way to change the in-vehicle analog camera controls without affecting the on-foot analog camera controls?)

Shooting pigeons: nice. So too is bumping into a pedestrian in the morning and knocking his coffee to the ground. I feel like Louis C.K.

...and man, those cops are vigilant ***holes, now. I gently backed a car out after dropping Michelle off for a date, and bumped into a squad car. That cop was on me like flies on a rib roast, and I ended up racking up a 3-star rating by the time I could get to the apartment. That date was not worth it.

I went into the "Party Mode" room for a little weaponry-testing. What I discovered is unlike the other GTA games -- the physics system makes me feel like a real d*** when I'm shooting random pedestrians.

The way they stumble, grab the part I shot, and try to limp away, rather than being a loud-mouthed bullet sponge...makes me not want to shoot them anymore.

^Yeah, the Euphoria engine is subtle, but when it kicks into gear it's amazing.

Case in point:

I carjacked a guy without realizing there was a passenger who I didn't give a chance to jump out. After going around the corner, I stopped to use the phone (never talk and drive!) and the passenger suddenly jumped out, ran around to my side of the car, and tried to trow me out. As soon as he opened the door I frantically backed up to get away (there was a car parked in front of me), but he grabbed on to the open door for dear life and would not let go. I think I dragged him for about 100 yards before he finally fell off.

Awesome.

Ive only got to the end of the Vlad storyline and I can tell I'll be playing this for a while. I heard that if you switch the controls back to old school the driving is much easier, I'll try that tonight. What I couldnt figure out is how to do the drive by's like back in the day, of course I didnt look at the instructions (who does that). Im gonna do some serious killing tonight though.

At one point, I drove my car right into a bridge-partition separating the islands (because it wasn't unlocked yet). I flew through the windshield, landed right at the foot of a police officer, instantly got a six-star wanted level, and ran around before I was shot in a hail of gunfire that would have made Dillinger nod in respect.

This all took about six seconds.

Also, I'm finishing an errand for Vlad, and crossing the street, when this guy, about 250 lbs, looks like Stone Cold Steve Austin's bastard child, runs me over in a sedan. I get up, dust myself off...a little irked, but okay, but then he starts honking his horn, and his friend starts bitching me out for blocking the road.

I pull a shotgun on the driver, aim at his head, and he freaks. I fire a "Don't **** with me" shot at the hood of the car, he steps out, hands up, and surrenders at gunpoint, pleading for his life. I aim for his crotch, Pulp Fiction fresh in memory; he runs off crying like a six-year-old with a skinned knee. I point the gun at his friend, who surrenders and runs off, as well.

Because I'm an ass, I grab one of the bricks I just used for the actual mission, aim, and nail him in the small of his back from half a block away, "Crocodile Dundee"-style. I then walked off and hailed a taxi, whistling a happy little tune to myself in real life.

Michelle is hilariously bland. She doesn't drink, constantly prods into your personal life, and screams "You're so...GREAT! YOU'RE GREAT!!!" in bed.

Michelle beat me in bowling. I beat her to death with a bowling pin to put her back in her place.

I'm happy with the radio stations so far--they're not quite up to Vice City's standards in my opinion, but so far they seem to have a higher level of parody in them. They talk about contemporary issues like global warming, terrorism, and healthcare without seeming stilted about them. They've hit the right chord.

Question: What's everyone's favorite vehicle so far?

I really like the Cognoscenti.
