Since the other one was closed, here's a thread about Saints Row 2, sequel to one of my favorite games. Comes out later this year.

Anyone see this new trailer yet?
Looks like Volition and THQ are tryin' to start some **** with Rockstar and Take Two. I actually kinda liked the first game, despite how relentlessly shallow it was. It was just kind of fun and goofy, and occasionally intense (the story sucks, but those last missions for each gang are just nuts). However, that trailer is probably not going to have the desired impact.
Yeah, it looks kinda fun, but dissing on GTA IV is not gonna win fans over. I know I rolled my eyes a couple of times.
I highly doubt that SR2 will have the moments of unscripted insanity that I've encountered in GTA IV. Like when a minor fender-bender quickly devolves into a shootout between bikers, gun-club members, Russian Mafiya, and cops (which YOU called onto the scene, just because you thought the area needed more guns) as you sit off to the side, eat a hot dog, and contemplate bringing out Mr. Rocket Launcher to mediate this traffic dispute.
You know what would be a bastard (awesome) move by Rockstar? Push back their DLC release to come out a couple of days before Saints 2. "Hey, guys! More GTA! More missions! Clothes! Euphoria-physics 'Crash Test Dummy' mini-game! Why spend $60 for a new game, when you can spend less than that for more of the game you love!"
God, that would be very, very prickish. I hope it happens.

Interesting article.
I loved the first Saints Row. Until I played Grand Theft Auto IV. Now it's a bit "Uh...eh..."
Before playing GTA, I was totally looking forward to Saints Row 2. I was thinking GTA would be my appetizer for it. Now, I don't really care that it got pushed back. Sure, I'm curious about what happens after that cliffhanger at the end of the first game, but other than that... I'll buy it, enjoy it, and then I'll probably go back and keep playing GTA.

Ayup...saying that you liked Saints Row better than GTA IV is some seriously genetically-inferior omega bull****, man.
To me, that commercial stinks of soulless pandering. It's like something that came out of a video game focus-group where the participants were all disgruntled 14-year-old ex-GTA fans who wanted everything "more extreme." The thing is, GTA IV is on another level.
It's Rockstar wanting to reconcile the nonlinear with the linear, and making the kind of gameplay that they're already known for part of a richer overall experience. Yes, they want to give us a sandbox to explore and play in and cause havoc in, but they're storytellers too, so this time 'round especially, they put extra effort into developing things like character and dialogue, and in-game diversions such as TV/radio/Internet.
What they've succeeded in creating through that is an even more detailed and immersive game-world, one that's full of action, laughs, twists and turns, and trademark Rockstar cynicism, but also tinged with sadness.
It's a wonderful creation.
What the competitors don't understand, and what they will probably never understand, is that the true beauty of GTA IV is to be found in the little things -- it's in the random encounters with street freaks and lost causes; it's in that first suckerpunch of an email from Niko's mom; it's in the fake online dating-profile that's obviously written by your closeted friend; it's in Rockstar's commentary on the fake **** people put on their resumés; it's in seeing a Hasidic Jew riding a Harley; it's in Niko starting to talk about his dead brother, but then changing the subject; it's in looking up Brucie's rap-sheet and finding out he was once busted for soliciting a tranny prostitute.
And perhaps more than anything else, it's in the simple joy of smacking someone in the face, then sprinting down the street away from the cops, thinking that they're going to be right on your tail, only to look back and see that 250-pound Al Powell-looking-mother****er way off in the distance waddling uselessly after you.
Also, going out with the other game characters never gets dull for me, because it's all about savoring the conversation ("I don't want to touch your balls, Brucie.").

I'm really looking forward to it. Saint's Row and even Crackdown are more fun than GTAIV. They also look like proper HD, whereas GTAIV looks like vomit on my HDTV.
Also, it doesn't look like any GTA DLC will be coming out any time soon.

The DLC's only been pushed back a month or so to help Take-Two's 2009 fiscal year. It's still on track for a "fall '08" release; it will just be November rather than October.
You can go back under your bridge now.

It was just to say it won't be getting an early release, but there's no need to get all defensive. This isn't a GTA thread, it's about Saint's Row, and I'll say how much better it is all I like.

Yeah, Leto II's post caused me to forget what thread I was actually in, so I retract the implied troll remark.

I'm certainly not overlooking the improvements that Saints Row made to the earlier GTA engines/mechanics (aiming, vehicle-handling, car passenger hostage-taking, insurance fraud scams). They did polish it up, of course. The game was enjoyable, for the most part. But it also was bland, had the most stereotypical and dumb story in video games, and got incredibly boring near the end.
Even though some folks may have been happy with the character-creation system ("He looks just like me!"), they should have learned from GTA3 that a mute protagonist is the wrong choice for a sprawling world like this. One-sided conversations with a guy who goes along with everything is the fricking worst.
And now that Mass Effect has proven that you can have a customized hero doing lip-synced dialogue, I'll be showing even less patience for that sort of thing in the future.
I do hope they do improve things on Saints Row 2. I hope their promise of a darker game is true. Co-op campaign could be neat, and they've got some other good ideas they're playing with. But for me to sink so many hours into another sandbox game after the near-perfection of GTA IV, they're going to have something special here, something that wasn't present with the original.
Saints Row 2 has every right to mock GTA IV. The question is whether it can back up its mockery with a good game.

That's exactly how I felt about GTA. After years of playing HD sandbox games like Just Cause, Saints Row, Crackdown and even sandbox type games like Assassin's Creed and Mass Effeft, GTA had a lot of ground to cover. For me it didn't really come out with anything special, it was just another one in the list. Sure it's a good game and they certainly have made improvements, but the market has been too competitive for it to stand out in my list.
Saints Row 2 will no doubt just be another one in the list. I'll pick it up and I'm sure I'll enjoy it just as much as all the others.

In my opinion GTA 4 felt like a polished up version of the getaway!
Kinda like playing twista in a suit which was two sizes too small!
I for one look forward to saints row two as I enjoyed the first one more than GTA 4.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed GTA to some extent as I loved the storyline but I felt they took a step back on the gameplay. Driving seemed to be one huge struggle!

The increased realism of GTA IV's driving was actually the point, though -- many fans feel like something went "wrong" in the development process, when in fact it was entirely deliberate on Rockstar's part to make the driving more touchy-feely and sensitive.
**** Saints Row...Mercenaries is where it's at.
When the sequel arrives, all your problems will be solved. Including ones unrelated to gaming.
