IGN has a preview of this game its Battlefront with LOTR instead of Star Wars.
I'm not a LOTR fan but this does sound interesting if only to see what a 360/PS3 SW:Battlefront could be

Edit: from the end of the interview
Well, just the interesting story that is the origin, the way it was created. This is the team that did Star Wars: Battlefront I and II and after we- well, we were contemplating what we wanted to do next and we've always had... again, you play this open battlefield in World War II and we played it in modern times and in Star Wars. So we really did everything that we felt we wanted to do in the Star Wars universe with this kind of gameplay and we started talking about how cool it would be to have this kind of gameplay but in a fantasy setting but where you're dealing with horses and creatures and trolls and swords and bows and arrows and castles and sieges and everything.

Then what? You think your Li'l Witch buddy's gonna stop with us? You saw her! She's a truck driving Magic Mamma. We've got maybe seconds before Darth Rosenberg grinds everybody into Jawa-burgers, and not one of you bunch has the midiclorians to stop her

Taking part in the defence of Minas Tirith would be awesome. I just hope they don't WOWise it like so many fantasy games at the moment.

Hmm...I don't particularly care that much for the Battlefield concept and both of the SW Battlefronts left me cold, so I have a bad feeling about this one...

I've never been a big fan of LOTR either, but some of the games weren't that bad. This looks pretty epic, I like the idea of being one of those huge tree guys.

ok im a bit of an um...nvm, but I loke LOTR and know loads, nowhewre near as my SW knowledge, but ya'know, and i think thyll be doing it 2 test ideas for BF3 star wars. but i think LOTR would b cool, with chara making, so like Wood elves are best at archery, high elves r fastest, Gondorians are best Swordsmans, Rohirim are best Horseriders etc! and then for like evil, ud get Harradriam, best at Riding Oliphants, Men of the East for Sword fighting, Uru-Kai for Speed and Orcs/Goblins for Archery. u nkow, the like =D and they could stick a good campagin, where u meet Gollum and stuff...this'll b e a nice thread, i see.

I think it could be a pretty good concept, but it's not like the units have comm units to keep tabs on battle progress. Be interesting to see what happens with the melee combat too, as that's a new path.

I agree, but they will likely use magic to tell the soldiers what to do. Because that is just how LOTR is. Umm, I think an interesting storyline could be made, it will probably be a bit like The Third Age, only without the FF style fighting and larger battles, but storyline wise, you will have to follow one of the main people, each race has its own reason or whatever. Like A dwarf to find Gimli as he has become a father or whatever, im not a great storywriter, evidently.

Never is all my years of reading or watching Lord of the Rings have I heard about MAGIC controlling the Gondorians, orcs, elves or men in a battle situation. That is just plain silly. If you read the article...
GN: When you're playing a single-player game by yourself, do you have any management control over what your army is doing?
Eric Gewirtz: Out management control is a little more dynamic than that. You can directly affect the tide of the battle based on the combat and your skill as the players, especially in the Instant Action Mode. The more effective you are at taking out enemy units and the more effective you are at accomplishing objectives, the more effective your allied army will be. So you can start to see the tide of battle starting to turn if you're really good. But there's no direct control over, "you go there," or a squad command.
