A book covering LucasArts' history is infinitely more interesting than another dumbed-down Star Wars flight sim.

If anyone starts saying how the Rogue Squadron series is a worthy sucessor to any of Larry Holland's masterpieces, I will chin them.

I wonder how the book will treat stuff like how LucasArts went insane and started releasing rubbish around the time between Jedi Outcast and Knights of the Old Republic, and then cancelled Full Throttle and Sam and Max 2, or as I like to call them 'The Glory Years'.

Except the two series are like apples and oranges. Holland's games are full-on simulators, with all the nerdy resource management implied (not that that's a bad thing). The Rogue Squadrons are arcade-style flight action games.

Some Star Wars nerds want a 'realistic' experience of flying the ships of the GFFA. Some just want to 'play the movies'. Some like both equally. One experience isn't necessarily superior to the other.

The argument boils down to 'Is an Arcade Flight Sim as good as a Proper Flight Sim?'
The answer is no. It is not.
With a sidenote to the effect of the Arcade Flight Sim being an unplayable, uncontrollable mess.

Trust the internet for opinions to be expressed as objective fact.

Asteroids and Galaga are far from 'proper' flight sims, too. But that doesn't stop them from being a helluva lot of fun.

Not everyone prefers their games to be super-complicated.

Dude, I don't know whether or not you've realized, but i'm one of these internet trolls; I'll argue any point blindingly just to piss you off, know that my opinion is infallably right and always insist on having the last word.

First off, the X-Wing series (Especially Tie Fighter and Alliance) is celebrated as one of the finest Star Wars experiences ever made in a number of different publications. This turns my opinion is reinforced into a big solid unbreakable concrete fact.
Also, if you're suggesting that X Wing games are super complicated, you either havn't played them, or you just really suck at them.

Anyway. Congratulations for derailing this thread. All I do is make an off hand comment about how i'll chin anyone who starts arguing that the masterpieces of Lawrence Holland, (much celebrated by myself and a number of other people on this board, especially those who still hold out that Tie Fighter: Empire will get announced some day) are better than the Rogue Squadron series, which wasn't even the main topic of my post MADE PRETTY MUCH ENTIRELY IN JEST. And you bait me into an argument. Now, stop it and get out before I call the internet police.

Thank you!

Actually, I did kind of suck at X-Wing and TIE Fighter. I still loved them, but I was not very good.

Allow me to re-rail the thread:

I wonder if this book is going to at least make an effort to be objectives about LA's failures and weaknesses over the years, or if it'll just be a fluffy "LucasArts is the greatest, most legendary company to ever happen to gaming" sort of affair.

1. it wasn't a compliment. don't take it that way.

2. don't re-rail a thread with the the same thing that was said in the same post that you took objection to in the first place to derail it.

Just not cricket.
