Hello, everyone.
I think I made a few slightly cool screenshots from within Battlefront I - but neither Irfanview nor Paint Shop Pro can read them.
How do I make them readable ?

Update: Even the "Zero Editor" by Pandemic themselves, which is shipped via the Battlefront modding tools, crashes as well when trying to read these .TGA screenshots.
I tend to blieve that this must be a rather serious bug which is not patched.
At least not patched in my 3-CD version of the game.
Some programs *try* to display the screenshots in .tga format, but they show nothing but black pictures. Nothing is there, except black.
Edit: I begin to suspect that I might have become a victim of the general "alkways use the latest patch !" policy.
Because I applied the 1.3 patch ...

Have you tried any of the programs mentioned in the links section here?
Edit - I guess yes, since Irfanview is mentioned. Maybe one of the others will work?
Also - do you have a different PC you can try it on, or can you email one to a friend to try?

Battlefront screenshots always pissed me off... You can open them in photoshop, but it's so much trouble. I don't understand why they couldn't use a more simple image type.

Paint Shop Pro has a screengrab feature you can assign to a hotkey (an unused function key is best), then you can enable to function and capture screenshots straight to PSP. It worked for Jedi Outcast / Academy, so may work for BF too.

thanks for your help(ful replies).
I don't have Photoshop - and yes, TGA is a rare format.
However, it *should* be readable by most better programs ...
My suspect really is at this moment that this is something I "achieved" through installing the 1.3 patch. I *always* use the *latest* patch, except in some rare occations. And now, it seems to me, I've got a problem.
I think this is one of the reasons why it is called "beta", although I don't understood why they made it gamma, so to say.
I'll ask some friends whether they can test the screenshots, and reply later what has come out of it.
If you would like to see them yourself, I can send them to you as well.
Edit: I just took a look at the "information" dialogbox of Infanview: "Counted colours: 1". OMG !
So this is a real bug.

I had contacted the programmer of IrfanView, and I just received a replay of him saying that the program wrote nothing but zero values into the screenshot I had sent him.
So, this "picture" contains nothing than zero values, although from the formal file format it is still a picture - but filled with "nothing".
I think I shall re-install the whole game and everything.

I re-installed it, applied the 1.2 patch ... The problem persists.
I have send an e-mail to the developers, Pandemic, to see what might come out of it. I even sent them the "screenshots" with the mail, for proof.
Could someone of you please try if the built-in screenshot function works with your game versions ? And what versions do you have (PC only) ?

what you may want to do is post on their forums. surprisingly enough, their employees do look at the boards and you may get a faster response that way (one of the few game developer boards that i've seen that level of interaction with the user base). there are also a number of users there that may know a workaround or fix for your issue.

Can you not just forget about trying to use their screenshot function and instead have a paint program running in the background while you play, hit "print screen", minimise game, "ctrl+v" into paint program and walaa! Screenshot.

Valid point, but at the end of the day, do you want a screenshot, or do you want to complain about a problem you can solve? If you want a screenshot, forget the hassle and just do what I suggested (which you seem to already know about), if you want something to moan about, continue as is.
