I love browsing the games on the Xbox 360 voice site - it keeps a record of what games are being played by registered users, and although it's not a true reflection of the total number of users on Xbox Live, I think it's a pretty good representation of what's going on.
Maybe this has been done somewhere else, but it was fun comparing anyway. I made a few screen shots of some of the biggest Xbox games so far. They're pretty self explanatory...
Oblivion: Interesting to note the release of Shivering Isles saw more peak users than its initial release.
Gears of War: Never really recovered after Halo 3 launched.
Crackdown: The biggest peak riding entirely on the Halo 3 beta.
Halo 3: Has taken a few blows from COD 4 and GTA IV, but staying steady.
Call of Duty 4: There seems to be a slight drop with the release of Mass Effect, and a huge drop with GTA IV as expected.
Grand Theft Auto IV: Quite a fast decline, I've heard it's now behind Halo 3 and COD 4 in terms of Live players. It looks like it's mainly a single player game for now.
You can see how every 360 game stacks up from here.

Yep, that's about right.

I find it interesting that Mass Effect had any effect on CoD4.
I would have thought those games represented two very different groups of gamers. Mass Effect really was that awesome, I guess.

It's a shame there are so few GTA IV players online. I've sincerely had more fun in a handful of wall-to-the-wall, all-out-mayhem sessions of GTA IV than in months of COD4 and Halo 3 standard FPS fragfests. That's not to say I don't like Halo 3 anymore. I can go online there and have a bit of fun (when not being utterly owned) in ranked and unranked games, but the game's already a bit dated. I think there's many a player that hasn't given the GTA IV mp the chance it deserves, or are more fixated with the 100% completion of the game than going online.
Gears' popularity decline is not surprising. I find the MP element of the game utterly lacking; more of an afterthought by the developing team than a full-fledged effort. I suppose that for the great majority of players, Gears MP was an online shooter holdover on Xbox live until the arrival of the true reason many a Xbox owner bought the console in the first place: Halo 3. I know it was for me. When 9/5/07 arrived I traded in my Gears copy and never looked back.

I assume it was Mass Effect - COD 4 clearly drops at the end of November. But it also might be the natural drop after a game is released as people try it then finish it or get sick of it...
I'm sure GTA IV will level out soon as the dedicated players stick around. I was listening to 1UP Yours podcast (I think it was that one) and they mentioned how console gamers tend to stick with the simplest of multiplayer games like Halo and COD 4. GTA IV - while a great multiplayer game - just isn't as simple to pick up and go as the others.
I can't really say though, I've not experienced GTA IV online much.
