Nice knowing you, Rock Band. Farewell!

Good gameplay isn't dependent on inventing new controllers every time out. Most of the features they're talking about could have been implemented with existing instruments. It's not as if the Rock Band drum set won't support 85 songs. Don't fool yourselves into thinking that they needed these new controllers to suit their grand ideas. They shoehorned new features into their instruments to justify making us buy them.

For that matter, they could easily have implemented a system wherein you get new features if you buy the new instruments, but still made the game perfectly playable with existing peripherals. This is about making people choose sides. They don't just want people to play GHWT, they want them to stop playing Rock Band.

I would love a beatles focused game, but the guitar in the beatles songs aren't exactly challenging.

Give me Guitar Hero: Pantera or Guitar Hero: COB anyday. Playing guitar as fast as Dimebag or Alexi = real challenge.

Which also makes me wonder:

Why is the Beatles-thing they're considering being presented as a legal "either/or" scenario? Plenty of bands -- hell, plenty of songs
-- have appeared in both games. If Apple Records decides that they want to deal with both Activision and MTV, they'd both be pretty stupid to insist on exclusivity.

GH3's soundtrack is better from a guitar perspective; Rock Band's is less limited to a single instrument. I wouldn't say one is better, but I prefer Rock Band's. And I also prefer Rock Band's visual style. Both have a different feel, but to me Guitar Hero feels tacky. Especially after playing Rock Band. Rock Band has a nice, clean interface. Call it boring if you want to, but the interface isn't supposed to be fun; the fun part is where you get together with three friends and rock out.

RB's "Expert Tour" on guitar was a breeze, except for "GG&HT." The leap in difficulty there is pretty steep, and I just can't beat it. If it were a short song, that would be one thing...it's the fact that every attempt is a massive undertaking in time and effort that just puts me into a rage. Every failure makes my wife wonder if THIS is the time that I smash the guitar through the TV or not.

Except for "GG&HT," there's nothing in Rock Band that's out for your ass with as much tenacity as "Carry Me Home," "Institutionalized," or "Misirlou." Those three alone give the edge to GH II's "Expert."

I can't five-star "Flirtin' with Disaster" or "Run to the Hills," but I passed them on the first try, and have no problem four-starring them consistently now. I think they're developing a healthy balance between new crap designed to keep the synergy with MTV and the record labels going, and the stuff that everyone actually wants to play.

As long as there's a Doolittle or Moving Pictures for every Papa Roach or Avenged Sevenfold track, I can deal.

I think it will be tough for me to pass up GHWT in the end. But it might be played as just another guitar-only game. I'm happy with the guitar peripherals I own -- the Xplorer, Les Paul, and RB Strat. I think I can pass on this new Red Octane guitar.

I'm assuming/hoping that the Rock Band mic I have will work with GHWT...can't imagine there's any incompatibility for that peripheral. Having read a discussion just the other day with someone close to the Harmonix camp, if there are any new guitars or drum kits coming for Rock Band, it'll be more in the vein of a special edition all-black Strat, or a drum kit with noise-reducing pads already installed. The core gameplay's not getting any fancier.

The game might be the coolest thing since coolness itself, but it's almost a no-go if I need new instruments to play it. It can have 8,500 songs and a Shirley Manson Realdoll, for all that it matters.

Mic's aren't software specific, there's nothing different from a mic-jack of one microphone to another. You could use any mic with the right adapter.

Right, but for some weird reason I can't figure out, when transitioning between another game and GH III and RB, the 360 feed-in occasionally doesn't quite "take" the way it should, freezing the game and causing me to reboot the system. (Wonder if the PS3 version has this issue?)

I don't know exactly what you mean, sorry. I wouldn't plug a USB device in a console after switching it on, Windows itself gives a little hiccup usually when something new is plugged in. I can't guarantee that's the problem though.

It may possibly be down to the speed of the USB device plugged in. I don't know specifically how USB 2.0 and 1.0 differ aside from speed, but the software might be expecting a usb 2 device and gets a usb 1 device, or some such...

Satriani, Vai, and Buckethead pack coming for GH3 this Thursday.

About damn time we got some Satriani. And ****ing "Soothsayer," man. SOOTHSAYER.

While I agree that Satriani and Vai (even though I ****ing hate his prima-donna attitude) should have been the types of artists included in this game right from the the beginning, they DID have an Eric Johnson tune (his best one, at that) in the original release.

Though I'm probably going to get arthritis trying to keep up with Satriani.

But, seriously..."Enjoy the Silence" by ****ing Lacuna Coil??

They couldn't have just gone with the far superior Depeche Mode original, instead of this über-pretentious, piece-of-crap, emo-goth opera-rock cover?

Alan Wilder is turning over in his grave.

Yep, looks like I'm gonna have to scrounge up enough cash for both RB2 and GHWT now. Both those setlists are just incredible. Tool, baby! All I can do now is just hope against hope that Activision and Neversoft did something to improve their charts this time around. Maybe, I dunno, hire some people that have actually picked up an instrument in their lives to work on their music games.

EDIT: Though... on closer inspection (since comparisons are inevitable), when you compare the different individual songs that each game got from all the bands that they have in common (and they do indeed have a whole big chunk of bands in common), I think I see an edge for RB overall in song choices. In just my own opinion and personal preference, naturally.

About time we get some Rammstein. Though I do notice a distinct lack of Vaughan and Vai.
