You can't condone the use of whistles and then knock Super-P's!

You try telling all those Koopa Kids their mothers were crushed beneath the fat, hairy ass of a 200-pound Italian general contractor.

Wait, the Koopas are females? Well that changes my entire outlook on the game.

I only had trouble with the water kingdom and the fire kingdom. The only thing that would have made it perfect is Yoshi.

Boba_Fett_2001 posted: NES is the only way to play it. I had to dedicate a large chunk of my day when I first beat it and I did not have the luxury of saving my progress whenever I felt like it. That being said, Battle Mode on All-Stars rules.
Battle Mode is also in the NES version. But yeah, I was like you. I'd spend an afternoon, usually a Sunday and play as far as I could get.
The2ndQuest posted: Didn't the All-Star version eliminate the lava ship swim-under shortcut? (or, specifically, added in an extra block that made it impossible to jump back up onot the shop after doing so?).
I haven't played the All-Stars version in ages, so I cannot remember. But you could still swim under it.
The2ndQuest posted: And, yeah, World 7 is ridiculously hard. Also kinda creepy.
Yeah, it's hard. Especially when you get to the Star dash section.
The2ndQuest posted: Back in the day, my pattern for beating SMB3 was to play through World 2 to get the second Warp Whistle, then warp from World 3 to World 5, play through through most of the first half of the map till I got the Super P-Wing, then warp from there to World 8. That way I could use the Super P-Wing to fly over and past the World 8 Tank, then swim udner the lava ship.
Mine was similar, except I would use World 3 to get all of those Mushroom houses and Slot houses. I'd get the P-Wing from World 5. But I would only use two P-Wing's; World 8-1 and the last airship. The first and last tanks are way too easy to waste a P-Wing. I'd use the cloud to skip over the last Mini-Fortress and then finish the game. I'd usually have at least 3 P-Wings. I'd use the last one to disable Bowser's fireball attack.
As to 3 being better than World, I gotta disagree. I'd rank them both evenly. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Yeah, but I like the All-Stars version better since it keeps track of each player's wins.

I just played that level. You can swim for the first half of the level and jump back on the ship. But if you swim all the way to the silver pipe at the end, you won't be able to jump on, and you'll be forced to sink to your death (IIRC, the level auto scrolled).

Yep, it was an auto-scroll level. The NES original had one less block on the back corner so you could make the jump back up out of the lava. For some reason they filled in that spot for All-Stars.

I would love it if someday they created an alternate version of this game with the same type of design and graphics. Like a second quest series of games that just goes back in video game history and changes things around so we can re-live it all in a new way.
Anyways, Super Mario Bros 3 is certainly one of those games that follows the old saying "he who hesitates is lost." There are just some levels were you have to gun it to the right and hope for the best because stopping to think about certain things will kill you.
Oh, and this is how I rank the worlds in terms of fun gameplay.
8. World 1
7. World 8
6. World 3
5. World 6
4. World 2
3. World 4
2. World 5
1. World 7

2) World 4
3) World 2
4) World 5
5) World 1
6) World 6
7) World 3
8) World 7
The first five are all pretty close. Six isn't terrible. Seven and eight suck.

Your list confuses me if both seven and eight suck. I don't know how people can hate world 7. Yeah it's the most difficult world, but it's also the most creative.

Yeah, I was talking numbers on the list, not worlds. I love World 8.
