I never get the whole trying to disprove evolution thing, surely creationists could just say God created evolution and it would still allow for the things they believe in.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I believe. That evolution was (and is, because it's still going on) part of God's plan.

Well, not if they believe in a literal six day creation (which is ironically a Jewish retelling of Babylonian creation myths but with correct theology).

As an ardent Thomist, I think that the presence of order and purpose and design in the universe is a good evidence for the existence of a rational creator, and that the principle of natural selection only reveals that the order is intrinsic.

Even without being a six day literalist, evolution and the genesis account still do not coincide. Human beings are described as having a particular mode of creation from dust enlivened by the spirit of God, as opposed to descent from already living creatures.

    I know, I know. I can't wait until October and Assassin's Creed 3, either.

The internet can't go a single science thread without the eventual theology discussion.

We are so not in need of another thread where people attempt to reconcile the dogma of their respective religions with objective evidence from the real world.

This is one of those "Gooooo science!" moments where I say...wait a minute.

The FBI’s Jerome Pender told the Senate in July that the searchable photo database used in the pilot studies only includes mugshots of known criminals. But it’s unclear from the NGI’s privacy statement whether that will remain the case once the entire system is up and running or if civilian photos might be added, says attorney Jennifer Lynch of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

I'm...not really sure how that pertains to science.

I agree with this as my personal belief up to the plan part. I think our creator ,"the force" of you will, may or may not have a plan.

Metaphors. Literalists are missing the point.

And creationists are usually convinced that man and dinosaurs co-existed and that all dinosaurs were vegetarians in the Garden of Eden.

Uhhuh. I sure as hell would like to know just what that "plan" entails, coz figuring it out on or own absolutely boggles/stumps the mind.

So the Higgs discovery is certified eh? So what now? When do we get our hoverboards and teleporters?

This is why I (and others) discourage attempts at extracting philosophy from scientific principles. The "presence of order" shouldn't be evidence for any metaphysical concept.

    My point, however, still stands.

*Certain types* of philosophy - philosophy and science need to be mutually aware and influential to be responsible. Philosophical theories that don't jibe with science are just storytelling, and science without an awareness of it's own philosophical assumptions is ignorance.

You'll note I wasn't talking about philosophy of science and the like. Hence my mention of metaphysics.
